Geography is the study of Earth's physical features and the complicated relationship between humans and the environment. The interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Geography with an emphasis in Water, Environment and Society takes this a step further. Students explore the broad scope of water supply and demand - a theme that has emerged as a critical planning issue in communities in the Western U.S. and around the world - at a school recognized as the world's No. 1 program in water resources by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Courses examine key questions facing policymakers and train students in the methods decision-makers use to address these issues, including remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS) and field methods. Students are encouraged to pursue internships and have access to research opportunities at renowned facilities and organizations, including the Water Resources Research Center, Arizona Project WET and Biosphere 2.

Are you a tuba fanatic? This Performance major helps you elevate your talent as you build a solid foundation in music education. Students wishing to earn their Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Tuba emphasis at the University of Arizona have the benefit of studying in the nationally lauded Fred Fox School of Music. Students audition for placement in a large conducted ensemble to fulfill credit requirements. The school boasts the Tuba-Euphonium Studio, featuring a variety of ensemble options and performance opportunities. Performance majors take 89 units of music courses, studying a mix of music literature, music history, pedagogy, orchestration, conducting, brass techniques and materials, and more. Graduates go on to fulfill teaching, performing and conducting roles nationally and abroad.

Chemistry is the study of the properties and reactions of the natural and synthetic substances that constitute the world around us. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry brings together the disciplines of physics, materials science, medicine and biology to give students a strong theoretical background while teaching them how to apply that knowledge to a range of biological and physical systems. Coursework is enhanced by state-of-the-art research facilities with multi-user capabilities in computational chemistry, surface analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance and photoelectron spectroscopy, and more. Develop expert-level language proficiency in one of the largest and most influential global economies. In the Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies program, students select from one of two focuses in language or culture. The Chinese Language Intensive focus provides instruction on three levels, from beginning to advanced, plus specialized instruction in advanced reading, writing and conversation. Students learn to communicate effectively and read proficiently.  The department offers a summer study abroad program in Hangzhou, where students learn about China's dynamic Buddhist tea culture while staying in a monastery connected to the Hangzhou Buddhist Academy.

Middle East and North African Studies employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning about all aspects of this region. The Bachelor of Arts focuses on instruction in the principal languages of the area (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) and includes coursework in religion, political science, history, literature, geography, sociology, archaeology, linguistics and architecture. Students seek degrees in this department out of a genuine interest in this part of the world, often on a professional path to government service, academics, a position in international business or as preparation for advanced study in this or other fields.

• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to identify the major historical periods, figures, and movements that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa from 600 C.E. to the present.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to compare and contrast the various social, cultural, religious, geographic and linguistic milieus of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to critically evaluate popular, political and/or media discussions of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to analyze and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources in order to develop and write a research paper.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to achieve proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages of the Middle East and North Africa (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). Communicative proficiency is defined in accordance with the Standards for foreign language learning as developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are further analyzed below: i. To communicate in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) languages, both orally and in writing, by engaging in interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication activities (Communication). ii. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the MENA cultures through language activities such as written essays and oral presentations on cultural topics (Culture). iii. To make meaningful cross-cultural comparisons between two or more of the MENA cultures (Comparisons).

The Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism focuses on reporting the news for radio, television and multimedia outlets. The program of study touches on important aspects of journalism such as law and ethics before diving into hands-on learning. Broadcast majors write, report, fact-check, shoot, produce and edit hard-news features and in-depth stories for broadcast and the web, culminating in quality news reports that can be included on reels to share with prospective employers. Electives in digital media, such as drone videography or mobile app development, can further prepare students for this ever-evolving field. If you want an immersion in Spanish dedicated to the scientific study of the language, consider the Hispanic Linguistics emphasis.  Linguistics is the study of language, including its structure, organization, sounds and meaning. In addition to language proficiency, students seeking their Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Hispanic Linguistics emphasis gain a thorough understanding of Spanish language framework. Classes in phonetics, morphosyntax, sociolinguistics and more teach students how the brain formulates and organizes Spanish. These courses provide a foundation for application to pedagogical issues in teaching the language as well as societal challenges in bilingual communities. Spanish majors seeking total language immersion also have opportunities to study abroad in Costa Rica, Spain and Chile. Graduates find roles in language education and other rewarding fields.
