Forge a deeper understanding of how aspects of race and gender discrimination overlap, and then learn ways to dismantle the systems that keep those factors in place. Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts that works to contest historical, ongoing and pervasive oppression based on gender, race, sexuality, class, ability and citizenship. Students can opt for an emphasis in Chicana and Latina Studies, a course of study that works with the Gender and Women's Studies department's prestigious Southwest Institute for Research on Women (SIROW). Established in 1979, SIROW develops research-action projects of importance to women in the Southwestern U.S. and the Mexico-U.S. border regions. Become proficient in tectonics, geophysics and geodynamics to gain greater understanding of our planet - from its inner core to the depths of the oceans to the outer reaches of space. The Bachelor of Science in Geosciences with a Geophysics emphasis takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the planet. The program covers topics such as tectonics, geophysics and geodynamics, as well as Earth system modeling, remote sensing and seismology. Students learn quantitative scientific research skills and gain experience working with data and technology in the field and in the laboratory. Geophysics students participate in a Capstone Summer Field Camp in the later part of their program that provides hands-on experience applying their content knowledge in the field. The Animal Sciences Bachelor of Science offers an Equine emphasis. Equine science is the study of horses and their care. During this program, students acquire practical, hands-on equine handling techniques; learn about equine nutrition, physiology and anatomy; and develop business strategy skills.
