Rowan English majors explore how meaning is made in and through language. They study a wide range of literary texts, learning to read closely, to ask sharp questions, and to write skillfully and with purpose. Rowan English majors form a unique and diverse learning community—one that celebrates intellectual curiosity, civic responsibility, and the rigors of research and critical analysis. At all levels of the curriculum, English majors engage with questions of genre, form, style, author, and audience as well as with questions of history, nation, culture, and social identity. The departmental mission is to teach and model the range of traditions and perspectives necessary for the study of literature, its history, and its contexts today.

Our M.A. in Higher Education Administrative track is designed to serve professionals without any experience in higher education administration, but who aspire to careers in that field; as well as those who are already practicing administrators in a college or university who wish to upgrade their skills.

Graduates of our Administrative track often pursue higher education careers in student affairs, including residential life, admissions, academic advising, student activity programming, and service-learning/volunteerism.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Criminal Justice prepares students for leadership positions in criminal justice agencies; for research positions in federal, state, county, city non-profit and private research institutions; and for further study in doctoral programs. This program aims to help students develop their skills to use research to evaluate the effectiveness of programs aimed at preventing and controlling crime. Upon degree completion, graduates will have an understanding of the causes of crime, of the impact of law on society and of contemporary issues in policing, courts and corrections.

Explore preparing and using financial reporting statements, mastering budgeting processes and operational planning, and advanced accounting principles that are crucial for careers in roles such as CPA, tax manager, budget analyst, or auditing manager. Accounting talent is in demand across diverse industries such as insurance, healthcare, or information technology, as well as in the public sector, serving accounting or financial management functions in nonprofit or government. Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management is a relevant and timely major especially with the current and impending threat of universal terrorism, the impact of climate change and natural disasters, and the enhanced need to address issues related to public safety and national security. Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management is an innovative and interdisciplinary degree program that focuses on training students in areas that impact human welfare locally, nationally, and globally. The program has a distinctive emphasis on urban issues and environments and the role that ethics plays in how policies, politics, and practices shape the quality of life for human beings in our state, nation, and world.

Our Master of Arts in Mathematics provides an opportunity to pursue advanced study in mathematics and develop the skills to help lead you to success in today's technologically-oriented society. Whether the goal involves applying mathematics to solve problems in business and industry, teaching in higher education, preparing for further graduate study in mathematics or related fields, or working in a rapidly the growing field of big data analysis as a statistician, this program enables each student to pursue a course of study that is appropriate for their interests.

To address these varying interests, we offer three concentrations: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.

American Studies challenges students to investigate the diversity of ideas and circumstances that create American society, culture and history as they develop their critical writing, reading and communication skills.

Our interdisciplinary foundation prepares students to be stronger and more productive citizens with the ability to adapt to the changing world.

Our Master of Arts in School Psychology provides a background in the theories, major knowledge and methodological procedures in psychology. We combine traditional classroom learning and extensive field experience to help you build knowledge and skills simultaneously.

Environmental and Sustainability Studies – let’s abbreviate it ESS – explores humanity's relationship with the natural world in order to help solve environmental problems. Environmental problems are a priority: in your town, across the state of New Jersey, throughout the US, and around the world. Without a strong and resilient environment, humans live shorter lives, have less productive economies, and miss out on the majesty of nature.

While science, technology, and engineering work has led to amazing tools for ‘fixing’ many of the environmental problems we currently face, the fact remains that these solutions are not always put into place. In other words, we already know how to solve many of the technical aspects of environmental problems we face; it is the human part that remains most challenging. You should study ESS if you want to understand the human context of environmental problems, and want to help implement meaningful, lasting solutions.

Be the good you want to see in the world. Using empirical data, sociology majors study factors that affect and shape cultures and societies. Through a combination of classroom study, field experience seminar and internships, you will develop and practice critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills that will serve you well for a lifetime.
