Applied mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with mathematical methods that find use in science, engineering, business, computer science, and industry. Thus, applied mathematics is a combination of mathematical science and specialized knowledge. The term "applied mathematics" also describes the professional specialty in which mathematicians work on practical problems by formulating and studying mathematical models. In the past, practical applications have motivated the development of mathematical theories, which then became the subject of study in pure mathematics where abstract concepts are studied for their own sake. The activity of applied mathematics is thus intimately connected with research in pure mathematics.

Our School of Fisheries, Aquaculture & Aquatic Sciences is the one of the world’s premier warm-water fisheries programs. As a student majoring in fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic sciences, you’ll receive a strong foundation in chemistry, mathematics and biology while learning how to apply these subjects to managing fresh and saltwater aquatic resources.

This degree will equip you with an understanding of the principles used in solving problems with aquatic resources and the awareness to provide safe, reliable food through aquaculture production. Graduates of this program are also prepared for veterinary medicine and other professional and graduate schools.

Philosophy deepens our engagement with fundamental questions that arise in everyday life with regard to ourselves, others and the world around us. Our Bachelor of Arts in philosophy exposes you to the great philosophers and philosophies of the past and the present. You’ll become adept at criticizing the view of others and your own views.

Our forestry program provides students with the knowledge to sustain and manage the diverse forest resources that make up local and regional landscapes.  For a hands-on introduction to field work,  students in the forestry program spend the summer between their second and third years at our summer practicum program held at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center outside Andalusia, Alabama.

The objectives of the forestry curriculum are to provide: 1) the fundamental knowledge regarding the resources that professional foresters typically manage and the multiple uses, sustaining, and conservation of those resources; 2) a general education integrating physical, social and biological sciences to prepare the forester for the role as steward of public and private forest resources; and 3) training and skills needed for initial forestry employment, as well as for advancement to higher levels of managerial responsibility. The forestry degree is appropriate for students who seek employment in any aspect of forest resource management, from forest industry lands where timber production is typically the primary objective, to private non-industrial properties where multiple-use predominates, to public lands where recreation or environmental protection is often paramount. The curriculum emphasizes biological, ecological, environmental, social, economic, and ethical considerations in forest management.

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering is oriented toward engineering design and practice. Some of the specialties students will study include surface science, biochemical engineering, catalysis, pulp and paper engineering, environmental engineering, waste conversion, computer-aided process design and simulation, novel bioseparations systems, chemical kinetics, and reactor design.

Our Bachelor of Arts degree in art is a studio-based degree that teaches you both art theory and skills in photography, printmaking, painting, ceramics, and more. We present a dynamic mixture of stylistic and aesthetic viewpoints that instill intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. Beyond the studio and lecture hall, we offer study abroad, career preparation, internship opportunities, and exhibitions and lectures by contemporary artists.

Auburn’s Bachelor of Science in Building Construction (BSCI) Program is a four-year ACCE accredited program focused on construction management including specialized training in estimating, scheduling, project management, safety, surveying, sustainable construction, and structures.

The Building Construction Program is unique due to its leading-edge information technology applications emphasis. This combination provides graduates a comprehensive foundation for success. The Master of Science in CSSE provides both online and on-campus students an opportunity for advanced learning and creative research. Students will further their education through a balanced program in both instruction and research with the goal of achieving excellence in the field of computer science and software engineering. On-campus students may choose the thesis or non-thesis option. Online students can choose a non-thesis (courses only) or, with special permission from the department, the thesis option. They will be able to specialize in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer networks, cybersecurity, databases and data science, human/computer interaction and machine learning.
