Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

As a geological sciences major, laboratory experience and field-based activities will enhance the vibrant and friendly academic environment. You will focus on the study of the Earth's dynamics and history, as well as its composition and the chemical, physical and biological changes that it undergoes. You can also choose to pursue a concentration in environmental geosciences.

The department offers a broad range of specialties within geosciences such as sedimentology, stratigraphy and basin evolution; tectonics and structural geology; environmental geology and hydrogeology; igneous and metamorphic petrology; geophysics and seismology; oceanography, coastal and estuarine processes; paleoecology; and paleoclimatology.

You will also have the unique opportunity to complete a four-week field course in Colorado to get valuable hands-on experience. This opportunity synergizes your education in geology to understanding the Earth's formation in an observational setting.

As a global studies major, you will focus on themes relating to globalization while learning to appreciate the world’s diversity. To achieve this end, this major requires students to focus on a particular world region and to attain proficiency in a modern foreign language.

Students in the Global Studies Program will focus on one of four themes: global health, global conflict and security, global sustainability and development, and global cultures. The M.S. degree is an academic research degree, which may be tailored to individual interests and job market needs. This degree requires a minimum of 36 graduate hours and combines real-world problem solving and research skills with other technical, health and related skills to prepare effective environmental health researchers for the public and private sectors. M.S. program graduates are often employed within federal, state and local public health and environmental protection agencies, federal and state research laboratories, contract research laboratories, industry, consulting firms and universities. Aerospace engineering graduate degrees include the Master of Engineering (M.E.), which is perceived to be more practically oriented, and the Master of Science (M.S.), which is considered more scholarly or fundamental and includes a thesis.

Programs of study for both the M.S. and M.E. in Aerospace Engineering include coursework in five core areas:

Economics majors in the College of Arts and Sciences may earn the B.S. by completing the 24-hour major requirement along with the college core, distribution requirements and cultural-awareness and writing-emphasis requirements as described in the basic degree requirements in liberal arts.

In addition to courses within your major, students in the College of Arts and Sciences must fulfill a cognate or minor. The cognate is intended to support the course work in the major, and it must consist of 12 hours of courses at the advanced level, outside of but related to, the major. In place of the cognate, B.A. students can choose a minor consisting of at least 18 credit hours of prescribed courses.

Tourism management majors combine studies in the liberal arts with studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, economics, human resources, service management, finance and information technology, as well as club, hotel and tourism management.

As a tourism management major, you will be involved in field studies, group projects, computer simulations and event and festival planning. The major also offers one of only two Club Management Association of America-certified programs, or you can choose to concentrate in meeting and events. Students wishing to pursue the concentration in club management are required to complete 15 credit hours including club management, club cuisine and service, and advanced club management and a hospitality and tourism internship.

A minimum of two required internships can take tourism management majors to locales from coast to coast and all places in between, with an emphasis on honing your management skills. In addition to internships, you can take advantage of numerous clubs, volunteer opportunities and tourism-related study abroad experiences.
