The Master of Science program in Pharmacology and Toxicology prepares students with the knowledge and abilities required for competitive technical positions in pharmacological research and testing, for participating in clinical trials, and for performing toxicological reviews and assessments in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries as well as in academic and governmental research laboratories.

Additionally, graduates are well positioned to continue their studies in Ph.D. programs in pharmacology and other biomedical sciences, while other graduates may find the program ideal for improving their credentials toward gaining admission to medical school or other health professional programs.

Career opportunities and employment may include academic departments involved in research, development, and teaching. The program is designed to enhance students' marketability, through combining exercise physiology with three well-established and popular areas of study: sports nutrition, athletic performance and fitness for people with disabilities.

Although there are three distinct areas of study, the program also offers academic flexibility with several elective courses. In addition, an active research laboratory allows students the opportunity to pursue their own data collection or get involved as a volunteer or graduate assistant.

The M.S. curriculum has an overall credit requirement of 36 credits. Our intention is to provide students with an education that is inspiring, satisfying and valuable to ensure our students are competitive across the current academic and career landscapes.

Students may choose from one of the following tracks:

Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition – Prepares students for advanced study in exercise physiology and for careers in corporate fitness, hospitals, rehabilitation, athletics, research and wellness programs. The track emphasizes the role of exercise in health and disease prevention, fitness testing and programming, physical activity intervention as well as hands-on, laboratory-based, clinically-based and research-based internship experiences.

Strength, Conditioning, and Sports Nutrition – Designed for individuals seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in the area of strength and conditioning of athletes. The program focuses on the science and practical application of current knowledge in the field. Students have the opportunity to earn national certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Fitness for People with Disabilities – Offers students a unique opportunity to combine advance courses in exercise science, exercise prescription, and applied behavior analysis to design fitness and sports programs for individuals with cognitive, emotional, and physical disabilities. Students develop specialized competencies in exercise testing, program design, and evaluation. This innovate approach leads to a variety of career options in the health-fitness, education and clinical fields.

M.F.A. in Creative Writing prepares students to both be professional writers in the world and to be visionary literary citizens. Situated in the heart of Brooklyn, LIU’s MFA in Creative Writing is an innovative creative writing program centered on world literature, multi-genre education, and publishing. Our applied MFA prepares students for careers in creative writing, academia, translation, and publishing. During their two-year residential program, students have the opportunity to study poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, and translation, and thus receive a robust multi-genre education.

In our MFA’s publishing courses, students study directly with professionals at the heart of the publishing industry. During the course of their study, students learn about commercial, independent, and academic publishing with frequent guest literary agents, editors, and leaders from seminal national and international literary arts organizations. The program is registered by the New York State Department of Education. Graduates of the program receive a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology that satisfies the academic and professional requirements specified by ASHA for the CCC-SLP, and are eligible to apply for licensure in SLP by the New York State Department of Education's Office of the Professions. Students who wish to satisfy the New York State Education Office of Teaching requirements for Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD) may also prepare for this certification as part of their graduate program. Students demonstrating proficiency (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing) in a language other than English may further prepare for a certificate in Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities with a Bilingual Extension. This program will prepare students to work with individuals who are bilingual or speak a language other than English. Master of Public Administration prepares students for public service responsibilities, blending management theory with practical applications in government, health and non-profit organizations. Students from diverse backgrounds with varying levels of professional expertise, are taught by faculty members who are current in all aspects of this continuously evolving and growing field.

The program of study is flexible and can be tailored to accommodate the professional requirements of the student by offering specialization courses that provide them with the opportunity to examine a specific management function or an area of application in greater depth.

Areas of specialization include public administration, non-profit management, urban government management, human resources management, law and management, international public management and social policy management. Other specializations can be developed in consultation with a faculty advisor from the broad spectrum of courses available through the Program and the School, as well as through courses available across the campus.
