Contemplate the ultimate questions, think critically and creatively about world religions, and analyze religious texts from various perspectives. You’ll be challenged to become a more compassionate, empathetic and self-aware global citizen.

Interdisciplinary approach

One of our most popular classes, Being Awesome at Life, examines the definition of a good life across cultures and throughout history. Science and Religion take a serious look at scientific and religious claims to find overlaps of agreement.

Other classes cover major world religions and how they relate to fields like ethics, archaeology, philosophy and environmental studies. Adding one of our interdisciplinary minors, like leadership and diversity studies, helps you gain a better understanding of important topics in today’s world.

Your education won’t end in the classroom. Join one of our very active student-run religious life groups. Study abroad through our Global Opportunities program to get a firsthand look at the religions of the world in Europe, Asia, Africa or South America.

In our program, you’ll study politics, government and public policy in the U.S. and abroad and why nations do — or do not — get along.

You’ll acquire the tools to question, analyze systems and institutions, and develop your own views about the best policies, programs and organizational rules for the world you envision.

Debates, simulations, trips to important political sites and engaged classroom conversation will encourage you to think more deeply about political issues of the day.

A political science degree gives you skills to follow many paths.

Some of our majors continue their political interests through public service. Recent graduates work for the New York City Office of Management and Budget, Maine House of Representatives, Boston City Council campaign, PA House of Representatives, PA Senate, PA Governor’s Office, New Jersey Assembly and the Snyder County PA Commissioner.

Others work for non-profit corporations in education, human services and health care as lobbyists, data analysts, professors, grant writers and more. Graduates also pursue jobs in insurance, finance, publishing and human resources.

Our students are also ready to attend law school or pursue graduate degrees in public policy, public administration or doctorates in political science.

Contemplate the complex moral and ethical issues faced by humanity — existence, meaning, values, truth and more.

Open your eyes to ideas you didn’t even know existed. We take on the complex issues that are rarely discussed.

You’ll be well-versed in classical philosophical thinking on age-old questions, like does God exist? We’re one of few universities to connect that kind of thinking to contemporary issues. We were the first university in the nation with a philosophy class on HBO’s “The Wire.” You’ll also study love and desire, environmental ethics, hip hop and other contemporary topics from a philosophical standpoint.

Even more than thought-provoking classes and great job opportunities, studying philosophy will help you understand yourself and lead a full and satisfying life.

History may take inspiration from the past, but here you do history.

Scour primary sources. Excel at organizing, scheduling and keeping notes. Develop a research project that will lead to graduate school or a promising career right after graduation. Travel to conferences to present your work. Explore local historical sites. Work both with antique sources and the latest digital technology.

Debate issues from various perspectives. Find your place in the world while acquiring 21st-century skills relevant to many careers.

Biochemistry is one of the most exciting degrees you can pursue in college.

You will apply chemical and physical principles to increase your knowledge of the complex chemical reactions among molecules in biological systems.

Learn to more fully understand life by studying the chemical relationship with the environment. The uses for this knowledge are astounding.

Work closely with biochemistry faculty on research using the latest equipment and technology — chromatography systems, laser systems and a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. Get comfortable in a modern laboratory setting doing research with our first class faculty.

Learn the essentials of digital and new media and gain real-life experience as a broadcaster — in front of or behind the camera — at Susquehanna. You’ll gain a holistic view of visual storytelling with our interdisciplinary minors, like film studies, to gain a better understanding of important topics in today’s world.

Learn principles of writing, ethics of communications, theories of traditional and digital media, and what it means to be a communications professional. Then, team up with others to learn tenets of broadcast media and professional communication. At Susquehanna, you will use the latest video and audio production equipment to practice videography, digital editing, writing for new media, commercial production and on-air procedures.

Action!

Evolve from a budding video storyteller to a well-rounded broadcast professional. You’ll amass experience in the field — broadcasting sports, creating commercials or shooting interviews — while you craft your own artistic vision. There are lots of opportunities for you to be involved, especially LensFlare, a group of students who create promotional and instructional videos for other students or faculty and staff.

Many broadcasting students take advantage of internships and study-abroad opportunities to gain a unique worldview of broadcast media. Before you leave Susquehanna, you will build a professional portfolio that will put you a level above the competition in your career field.

The photography major is focused on the development of students as artists and practicing professionals. In addition to mastering the camera and associated technology, students will develop a distinctive personal style through their experiences inside and outside the classroom. Majors are well versed in historical and contemporary art, and are given numerous opportunities to exhibit their work, travel, and receive feedback from faculty and peers. Prior to graduation, students will professionally mount a public exhibition of the work in The Lore Degenstein Gallery, where they will gain experience in a professional gallery with museum standards.

Majors enjoy 24-hour electronic card-swipe access to all art facilities and state of the art computer labs, open only to departmental students. The digital photography classroom is equipped with high-end professional studio lighting, seamless cloth and paper backgrounds, and dedicated lecture, critique, and production spaces.

Required independent coursework and a cross-disciplinary approach allow students to investigate and experiment with multiple ways of creating art. Students are encouraged and given ample time to develop a distinctive and personal visual style.

Master the Spanish language and immerse yourself in the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

We’re one of the only universities that requires semester-long study abroad for language majors. Connect with native Spanish speakers in Valencia, Spain; Heredia, Costa Rica; Merida, Mexico; or Havana, Cuba — to name a few.

While abroad, you’ll live with host families, do internships in fields such as health and grant-writing, and take courses in a broad array of disciplines. You will also travel and make new, long-lasting friendships.

When you return to Susquehanna, you’ll bring back firsthand knowledge of the cultures you’ve experienced and a grasp of the Spanish language only achieved through immersion!

• Connect with Spanish-speakers on campus! Take courses on the literatures, cultures and histories of Spanish-speaking communities around the world. Study Spanish translation, and get involved with activities outside of the classroom.
• Come to our Latinx Initiative, which promotes the understanding of Latino cultures through exhibits, film, presentations, workshops and speakers.
• Join in conversation tables with Fulbright Fellows from Spain and Latin America.
• Share your interests with a growing number of Susquehanna students interested in Latinx cultures and heritage by joining ALAS (Association of Latinx and American Students).
