Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The 12-credit community development concentration provides students with additional skills focused on the administration of both traditional and non-traditional programs and services. The concentration addresses planning, development, and evaluation of innovative approaches to treatment and prevention in the public and private human service sectors as well as in business and industry.

Program Outcomes:

  • Students will demonstrate competence in all 8 core domains of counseling, as well as the concentration of clinical mental health counseling.
  • Students successfully synthesize major theoretical concepts in the core counseling curriculum and their concentration area with their practicum experience.

Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Master of Science in Environmental Science (STEM)

A program grounded firmly in the University’s commitment to experiential education, the M.S. in Environmental Science program provides students with extensive hands-on learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Our shoreline location allows students to gain experience working in a variety of settings along the marsh and ocean areas of Long Island Sound — experiences that are complemented by work in our laboratories. Students also have the unique opportunity to study at the Gerace Research Centre on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. With studies in environmental ecology, environmental geoscience, environmental health and management, geographical information systems, and other topics, the program allows students to customize their education to their individual career interests.

As a required component of the program, students complete a research project, thesis, or internship. These experiences have led our students to fulfilling careers in private environmental firms, government agencies, and more. Many students have also chosen to pursue doctoral study at other institutions following graduation.

If you enjoy studying the human body and using exercise to promote health and wellness, exercise science may be the ideal major for you. Our Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science provides a strong foundation that includes coursework in anatomy, exercise physiology, and biomechanics. You will take a wide range of courses to prepare you to pursue a variety of opportunities in the health care, fitness, and wellness industries by learning to:

  • Evaluate health behaviors and risk factors

The International Business - Marketing degree is designed to provide in-depth expertise in the discipline of marketing while it concurrently provides students with a broader, global business perspective. Such perspective is essential to operating in today’s increasing complex multi-national business context. The program ensures students have a proficiency in a second language, enhanced socio-cultural awareness and a robust study abroad experience. Designed for both new graduates and those already employed in the public sector seeking advancement, the MPA program in the Department of Public Management provides students with the opportunity to increase knowledge and gain the skills necessary to take on challenging assignments in budgeting, planning, public policy formulation, public finance, public personnel administration, and collective bargaining. The interdisciplinary program offers twelve courses — nine required courses and three elective or concentration courses. You may also elect to take courses in management, criminal justice, fire science, psychology, economics, and more.

The MPA program is designed to provide exceptional flexibility for our students:

  • Classes in the regular, main campus schedule meet on weeknights to accommodate working students. The regular graduate schedule follows a fifteen-week semester format. Online and weekend classes are available.
  • Students can choose from six concentrations: fire and emergency medical services, municipal management, nonprofit management, public financial management, public safety, and general.
