The Master of Science in Engineering program is a flexible program designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of students. The program can be a stepping-stone on the way to further studies and the pursuit of advanced research, such as can be obtained by pursuing the PhD. Or the program can provide a pathway to professional advancement through greater technical knowledge and intellectual maturity. The student, with the help and approval of a major advisor, can choose from a wide range of courses from throughout the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), and where appropriate, from other schools and colleges.

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms (bacteria, archaea, protists, fungi) and viruses. The Department offers a BS in microbiology with research opportunities to conduct original research and investigate different aspects of microbial structure and function.

Microorganisms were the first living things on earth, and they remain the most abundant and the most diverse of all organisms. They can cause diseases of plants, animals and humans; they play critical roles in biogeochemical cycles and bioremediation; and they are important in the food and biotechnology industries.

As a microbiologist, students will be on the cutting edge of developments in public health, industrial production processes, biotechnology, and drug discovery. The microbiology major prepares students for a variety of careers in the fields of microbiology, virology, molecular biology, biotechnology, and health related professions, for graduate studies in medical microbiology, industrial microbiology, environmental microbiology, microbial biotechnology, and molecular biology, and for professional studies in pharmacy, dentistry, and medicine.

Marketing is a key factor contributing to the success of any business organization. It is the dynamic and creative process of the development, pricing, promotion, and distribution of products and services to satisfy customer and organizational objectives. Effective marketing requires an integration of eclectic knowledge and the skills pertinent to understanding consumer behavior, planning and analyzing marketing research data, thinking strategically, and managing people.

Students learn how marketing supports an organization's objectives; how to examine consumer motivation and behavior; how to price, promote, and distribute products and services; and how to plan and analyze market research data to make good decisions.

Graduates of the marketing major find an exciting and broad spectrum of career opportunities in brand/product management, industrial selling, retailing, sales management, advertising, marketing research, customer-service management, and other areas.

Economics is the study of choice and decision-making in the face of scarce resources, both at the individual and group levels. Economists examine tradeoffs between different actions and behaviors; analyze different scenarios such as a change in prices, cultural values, or law; and seek to explain and predict human behavior.

Students often ask what the difference is between Economics and Finance. The areas are interrelated and inform and influence each other. Professionally, there is also crossover, with economists working in financial markets and financial experts working on economic policy. In broad terms, economics focuses on concepts related to overall markets, government policy, and decision-making influences. Finance tends to focus on individual businesses and individual people, including the study of assets and liabilities, and financial statements and reporting.

At UWM, students of economics have access to faculty members who are internationally recognized experts in their field. Focus areas for students to choose from include economic theory, quantitative methods including econometrics, public policy, law and the economy, labor economics, and international economic relations.

The Master of Science in Biostatistics program provides an innovative curriculum to meet a range of professional needs and interests. The program trains students in study design, appropriate use of statistical and computational techniques, and interpretation of data analysis results arising from public health and biomedical research. Students learn both classical and modern statistical methods and apply their statistical skills and knowledge to solve "big data” problems. They have the opportunity to work with faculty on cutting edge research projects, such as discovering genetic causes of common diseases, developing statistical algorithms to monitor treatment efficacy, and reducing medical costs through electronic health record.

The market for professional singers is changing—opera singers are performing in musicals, Broadway performers are singing operas, and pop singer training is improving dramatically.  UWM is out in front of these changes with our BFA: Versatile Voice, a program that is broad enough to cover many genres and flexible enough to reflect each student’s interest.

This concentration is designed primarily for students who wish to do advanced study in music history and literature. For some students, the degree is a terminal degree (for example, music teachers who may wish to pursue graduate work in music history rather than in music education), while for others it serves as preparation for the study of musicology at the doctoral level.

Political science is the study of governments, political processes, public policies and political behavior by groups or individuals and is an ideal major for students with a passion for current events.

At UWM, students take coursework from four broad areas of political science in order to obtain a well-rounded education in the field: American politics, international relations, comparative politics, and political theory. Along with exploring these substantive areas, students strengthen their research, writing, and critical thinking skills.  With this background, students leave UWM ready to enter graduate school or the world of work in government, international organizations, campaigns, business, consulting, nonprofits, and many other industries. This broad major is available entirely online, or students can mix-and-match and take a some online and some traditional classes.

The study of Philosophy can be challenging because it asks students to critically examine very fundamental questions about what it means to be human - behavior, values, ethics, logic, aesthetics. Some describe it as "thinking in slow motion" because of the way it explores in depth the human experience.

Students choose philosophy because it instills a lifelong love and quest for knowledge, it imparts a disciplined and systematic way of thinking, and it enhances critical and analytical capacities. Most graduates of philosophy describe the great personal reward that comes from exploring the great thinkers of the past in the context of modern issues. But, they also passionately value the career skills that they developed - how to read and comprehend difficult text; how to understand different interpretations of information and assess opposing viewpoints; how to craft a clear and logical position on an issue in writing and orally; and how to make connections between smaller, seemingly disparate details and the big picture.

UWM graduates who earn the MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies in any of the above forms reflect sufficient preparation for gainful post-graduation employment or admission to a doctor of philosophy program at a peer or aspirational institutions, and they will:

• Be knowledgeable about the linguistic, literary, and cultural productions of their source and target communities in the past and present; be able to situate them within a historical, cultural and discursive (interdisciplinary and/or cross-cultural) context; be familiar with several major tendencies in critical and theoretical analysis, and be able to apply them to the study of these texts.
• Provide nuanced and sophisticated discussions (in writing and in conversation) of linguistic, literary, and cultural works in English, and when appropriate, in the target language of their field of study. This includes the ability to analyze and to incorporate critical/theoretical frameworks into their written and oral discussions of literary or cultural works.
• Be able to perform professional skills tied to the translation and interpreting field (e.g., translate/interpret accurately in their area of specialization; create and maintain terminology database resources; efficiently and accurately conduct research related to TandI; understand broad aspects of the TandI industry).
• Conduct independent research in Translation and Interpreting Studies. This includes the ability to develop and delimit a research question, to conduct a systematic investigation of the question, and to present or evaluate research according to standard models of analysis and argumentation.
• Be aware of career and post-graduate opportunities that their degree makes possible, which includes knowing how to search and apply for professional opportunities or advanced study related to the MA, and participating in professional activities such as colloquia, conferences, and meetings.
