This popular program provides students with the leadership skills and training required to strategically plan, implement, evaluate and manage programs for community members of all ages and abilities, prepare budgets, raise funds, manage staff, and market activities with teams of volunteers and other recreation and leisure service providers.

You will have the opportunity to obtain HIGH FIVE certifications in Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) and Quality Experience Scanning Tool 2 (QUEST 2) from Parks and Recreation Ontario, as well as other workshops and certifications embedded within the program. In addition, you will learn about Active Network and Intelligenz recreation management software, which is used extensively in the Canadian recreation industry.

This program is approved by the ADR Institute of Ontario (ADRIO) and students in the program receive a 16-month student membership with ADRIO. This program is also approved by the Ontario Association for Family Mediation (OAFM) and Family Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario (FDRIO).

Used in a wide variety of organizations, accounting involves measuring business activities; processing information into financial reports and statements; and communicating information to the appropriate decision-makers. To meet the wide range of accounting employment opportunities, Durham College incorporates a variety of simulations into the courses to help prepare students for the workplace. This two-semester pathway is designed for individuals interested in pursuing various science and engineering programs at Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech). This option offers opportunities to refine essential skills and develop foundational knowledge in the areas of science, mathematics, and communication, which are necessary for admission into future post-secondary programs. Some General Arts and Science courses are also transferable to other post-secondary programs. This pathway has the added benefit of helping students become better acquainted with post-secondary life, workload, and expectations.

The Honours Bachelor of Construction Management (HBCM) program provides students with the knowledge, skills and abilities they will need to succeed in a career in the industrial, residential, institutional, or commercial construction industries. Graduates of the HBCM program will be prepared to make meaningful contributions to the prosperity, sustainability and resiliency of Ontario’s economic future.

As Ontario’s construction sector enjoys sustained and significant expansion, the growing demand for skilled workers continues to create excellent employment opportunities for knowledgeable and well-prepared graduates to fill the estimated 118,000 new construction sector jobs that will be created over the next 15 years.

It is anticipated that demand for well-trained employees will be even more pronounced in occupations that require an advanced level of skill, such as construction managers, estimators, job site superintendents and project managers.

Faced with an increasingly global business world, employers are actively seeking our Supply Chain and Operations Management graduates for their job-ready skills in complex problem solving, analytics, decision-making and communications. Students with an interest in business who enjoy making things better and are drawn to the idea of no two work days ever being the same will thrive in this field. Graduates enter the workforce ready to take the diverse, exciting, and rewarding career opportunities that are currently outpacing the professionals available to fill them.

In this program, you will develop knowledge of business processes and management tools to develop demand forecasts; evaluate suppliers’ capabilities to ethically source purchased goods and services; use technology, including SAP® and Microsoft Excel/Project; and develop supply chain plans and schedules to efficiently produce goods or services that meet quality expectations and the needs of the global markets. You will also learn industry-standard practices including Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, Lean Principles, and Project Management. Led by knowledgeable faculty with strong ties to industry, this program also provides many opportunities for real-world learning experiences through either field placement or co-op work terms. You will also be able to earn industry credentials, including the SAP-UA Student Recognition Award and Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in Excel, to help you stand out to employers in a competitive market.

Supply chain and operations management is the core functional area of any business. Supply chain and operations managers obtain, develop and manage the resources required to deliver goods and services to clients. This includes contributing to key decisions involving:

• Purchasing/Procurement
• Operations  planning and scheduling
• Supply chain management
• Quality assurance
• Facilities management
• Inventory management
• Transportation, distribution and logistics

Graduates are well-positioned to pursue a variety of professional accreditations with professional organizations including:

• Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) - Certified in Production and Inventory Management
• Supply Chain Management Association (SCMA) - Supply Chain Management Professional (SCMP) designation
• Project Management Institute (PMI) – Certified Associate in Project Management

After completing one year of business study, you may choose to graduate with a certificate in Business Fundamentals. After two years of study, you may choose to graduate with a diploma in Supply Chain and Operations – Business.

Students will have two options to gain valuable skills in the workforce and will either complete a field placement or a co-operative education (co-op) experience. Students completing the field placement will participate in an unpaid work placement completed during semester 6. Students who qualify for the co-op experience will complete a four-month paid work experience in between second and third year of their program.

Co-operative education (co-op)

The best way to succeed in your field is to immerse yourself in it! Co-op is an excellent way to build your professional network, explore career paths and apply in-class teachings to real work situations. Co-op is a model of education that integrates academic learning with workplace learning in fields relevant to our students’ academic and personal goals. Similar to an academic course, work terms are a mandatory component to this form of experiential learning.

Students in the Business Administration – Supply Chain and Operations Management Advanced Diploma program will be invited to apply to the co-op option during their first year of study. Entrance to the co-op option is limited and the processes for securing a work term are competitive.  Students who qualify for co-op will be eligible to complete a four-month, paid work term between the second and third years of their program. Students interested in co-op may also apply to transfer to the co-op internship option of their program which would extend the work integrated learning opportunity to 4 consecutive work terms.

Supports are available through the Co-op office to assist students with securing their work terms. In addition, the Co-op office is in contact with co-op students and their employers during the work terms to help with any questions. Upon completing the work term, co-op students return to campus to complete their final two academic semesters of the program before graduating.

The three-year Finance – Business Administration program provides advanced education and training in business, financial planning, investments, and life and health insurance. The Computer Systems Technician program is the perfect vehicle to launch a rewarding career in computer assembly, installation, configuration and troubleshooting. You will learn from industry-connected professors in new, state-of-the-art labs. This program is built on partnerships with some of the most influential names in networking today, including Cisco, IBM and Microsoft. Graduates will be able to help support computer users throughout an entire organization by deploying desktop and laptop systems, assisting users with day-to-day tasks, supporting help desk environments, troubleshooting networking issues and rolling out emerging technologies that will give their organization a competitive advantage.

This program will provide you with the technical skills and expertise required to work in the high-demand world of personal computers, networking and application support to meet the information technology (IT) needs of modern organizations.

The program curriculum addresses the technical aspects of commonly used components and troubleshooting techniques for:

• Computer hardware
• Networking technologies
• Operating systems
• Security
• System administration

You will also learn how to develop your communication and administrative skills and be trained in critical-thinking skills designed to help you respond to many technical challenges. As a graduate, you will be able to:

• Challenge for industry-recognized certifications (e.g. Cisco CCNA, Microsoft MCP, CompTIA, A+, Net+)
• Install and configure system software and network devices
• Troubleshoot computer system and network issues.

Note: To ensure you make an informed decision about your IT career path, a common first semester is offered for the Computer Systems Technician, Computer Systems Technology, Computer Programmer and Computer Programmer Analyst programs. This approach will give you an opportunity to explore the systems/programming applications and networking/hardware applications of the IT sector.

In order for advertisers to compete for ‘screen-time’ they must develop engaging content that harnesses the power to connect with consumers. As marketers strive to increase their share of consumer attention, they must research how people are spending time across multiple devices and platforms. When you understand consumer markets and behaviour, you can create great advertising campaigns.

The Advertising and Marketing Communications program prepares you with the knowledge, skills and experience for an exciting career in the advertising industry. You can work at an agency, research or production firm, or within a media company; we will help you choose the path that best suits your skill-set. You will gain experience as an account manager and production artist working for campus media, and have the opportunity to participate in the college advertising agency – ‘collaboragency’. Our students manage real accounts and deliver both strategic and creative recommendations to achieve client goals.
