The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees is designed to provide students with the core knowledge, skills and abilities fundamental to academic success in health sciences programs such as the collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program delivered by Durham College and Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech), as well as other health science-related programs at the advanced diploma or degree level. This two-semester program is specifically designed for individuals looking to develop their knowledge and skills in communications, mathematics, biology, general and organic chemistry, physics or critical thinking so they are well-prepared for the rigors of their next academic program. In addition, the program provides students with the opportunity to learn about potential careers in the health sciences and identify other programs focusing on the biological or chemical sciences that will enable them to achieve their career objectives.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to rapidly transform the way organizations and their people work, a shortage of skilled professionals remains the single most significant challenge facing AI adoption by industry. With a focus on enterprise AI, including both off-the-shelf solutions and proprietary AI, this program – the first and only graduate certificate of its kind in Canada – will prepare you to meet this demand for AI-literate practitioners.

As a graduate, you will know how to leverage AI to extract data and use data-driven intelligence to guide decision-making, solving complex enterprise problems with state-of-the-art solutions, all while creating efficiency and quality gains for small and medium-sized enterprises up to the largest of corporations. Additional emphasis will be put on data governance, including data management to ensure its integrity.

Students will also benefit from multiple opportunities for experiential learning, including access to the college’s AI Hub, completion of two diverse capstone projects and an optional work term. As an environmental technologist, you will spend your days outdoors conducting critical monitoring, sampling and surveying before returning to the lab to perform your analyses and the office to record and tabulate data. Whether advising organizations on best practices or holding them accountable for poor ones, your work will be vital to ensuring the health of our communities and planet.

If you are a domestic or internationally educated student with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, you may be eligible for a compressed, fast-track opportunity to complete your advanced diploma requirements in two semesters.

The Environmental Technology program focuses on the chemical and biological sciences as they relate to environmental pollution. An emphasis is placed on ground and surface water quality, soil and waste management and recycling in urban and industrial settings. You will also examine environmental regulations and review their social and economic impacts on communities.

Training and experience in the handling, analysis and monitoring of a wide variety of biological and chemical parameters linked to pollution are at the heart of the program. First-hand field and laboratory experience is emphasized in areas such as:

Environmental problems and concerns are constantly changing and at Durham College we aim to adapt in order to stay at the leading edge of these changes. Statistics Canada has identified environmental technology as one of the top emerging employment sectors.

This fast-track option is designed for students with existing academic credentials and will provide you with the advanced skills necessary for employment in the environmental field. The program provides technical practice with many opportunities for hands-on experience and project-based learning.

Quality early childhood education (ECE) is critical in preparing children for future learning. As an early childhood educator, you will have an integral role in promoting children’s development from birth to age 12 within the following five domains: cognitive, social, emotional, language and physical. In the ECE program, you will engage in theoretical studies along with practical applications. Moreover, professional practice and ethics will guide you in working with families, understanding pedagogy and fostering belonging and well-being in children. Upon completion of your program, you will apply to the College of Early Childhood Educators, the provincial regulatory body, to become a Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE) in Ontario.

An aging population, as well as greater public awareness of health issues, has resulted in more job opportunities in health occupations. The demand for massage therapy is also fueled by its growing popularity as a means of relaxation, stress relief and rehabilitation in today’s busy society.

In this program, students will acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to provide safe, effective and ethical care at the entry-level of practice within the massage therapy profession.

Major emphasis is placed on the development of effective interpersonal and communication skills, critical thinking, empathic responses and decision making. Students learn how to meet legal and ethical obligations according to legislative and profession-specific guidelines. Anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, massage theory, communication, entrepreneurial and professional skills are also emphasized.

The program’s foundation is based on the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics identified by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO).

In six semesters, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

• Conduct a massage therapy practice within a legal, professional and ethical framework.
• Apply business principles relevant to a massage therapy practice.
• Communicate and collaborate effectively and professionally with clients, colleagues and members of the inter-professional team.
• Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships to optimize clients’ health and wellness.
• Collect and assess clients’ information to determine their state of health and the treatment goals.
• Develop, implement and evaluate a plan of care according to the client’s condition and the treatment goals.

Enter the field of environmental health and safety management and launch a career where no two days are ever the same. As a graduate of this program, you will apply technical knowledge of safety hazards, health risks and dangers to prevent injuries and illness while supporting broader public safety. Become a highly skilled professional with the expertise to manage the social, health, environmental and legal issues associated with the built and natural environment. With the implementation of new legislated requirements in Canada regarding workplace safety and environmental protection standards, job prospects in this field are continuing to grow. Combine strategic problem solving with strong interpersonal skills as you perform environmental audits, deliver training, implement safety controls, conduct incident investigations, develop controls and contingency planning and prepare technical documentation and records in a quality-controlled environment. You will also be well-positioned to pursue the Certified Health and Safety Consultant designation upon graduation.

As an Environment Health and Safety Management graduate, you will be able to:

• Perform work audits in environmental and occupational health and safety in compliance with legislation to prevent workplace risk exposure.
• Design evidence-based training programs that use industry best practices for evaluating the health and safety of built and natural environments.
• Evaluate technical, environmental and industrial hygiene procedures and systems in their alignment to legislation, regulatory standards and guidelines.
• Conduct material testing in the laboratory and on site using qualitative sampling methods and statistical data analysis to determine contaminants and hazards.
• Propose health and safety recommendations that respond to concerns arising from audit findings, risk and life cycle assessments and the review of report documentation.
• Prepare health and safety technical documentation to record the results of investigations of the built and natural environment.
• Manage project communication with partners to ensure consistency and maintain quality.
• Develop emergency responses to industrial and natural disasters by assessing and minimizing environmental and labour impact.

This joint Durham College (DC) and Ontario Tech University (Ontario Tech) diploma-to-degree program will enable you to earn your college diploma and university degree in only four years. Build a solid foundation in business theory as well as experience hands-on learning in various areas of entrepreneurship such as business plan writing, digital marketing, mentorship, and starting a new business venture on campus at DC.

Please note that while the Entrepreneurship major has been suspended at Ontario Tech University, students in this university transfer program are able to complete a Bachelor of Commerce and choose from other major options.

Designing, developing and keeping those systems up-to-date with the business processes they support is the domain of programmer analysts. In a digitized world, the ingenuity and technical know-how of programmer analysts are in demand. From transportation networks to critical hospital databases to social network-driven applications, analysts design and develop the systems that are key to the success of all businesses and services in today’s digital world.

If you have an interest in helping others in an oral health care setting and becoming a valued member of a dental team in your community, this may be the profession for you. Students will acquire knowledge, skills and training in the professional behavior necessary to work as a Level II dental assistant, providing education and care in a variety of dental settings.

From magazine ads and interactive graphics to book covers and digital signage, graphic designers have the power to express emotions, influence decisions and bring ideas to life. Students learn to design and produce logos, brochures, magazine layouts and annual reports. Graduates of this program create advertising and branding campaigns, corporate identity systems, and packaging prototypes. They develop two and three-dimensional illustrations and produce integrated media content for the web.

NOTE: Students enrolling in this program are required to purchase their own laptop.

This program prepares graduates for work as entry-level designers. Students learn skills required to solve specific visual problems through practical work that covers a broad spectrum of visual communication in corporate, editorial, advertising and package design. The program of studies in first year includes:
