Delivered at our campus in Peterborough, this is one of the few two-year Graphic Design advanced diploma programs offered in Ontario. In this intensive, compressed program, three years of study is completed over a two- year period. Graduates are ready to start their graphic design careers in just 24 months.

Students in Fleming’s accelerated graphic design program learn and work in a unique, contemporary design studio space; in this “classroom as design lab and studio,” they discover what it takes to become a professional designer, and how to thrive in this fast-paced industry.

Students gain the skills and understanding required to communicate ideas in digital and printed media through extensive and varied applied learning experiences. At the end of six continuous semesters, they are fully-prepared to hit the ground running, ready to launch their design careers in any industry that requires creative problem solving through visual communication.

Program Highlights
This three-semester program prepares graduates for work in recreation, health or social service delivery settings. The program is offered in a combination of on-campus and online courses. During the first two semesters, you are required to be on campus two days of each week for the on-campus courses. The remainder of the courses are taken online. The program structure of combined class time and online learning provides you with the flexibility to participate in volunteer activities and to maintain family/work balance. This style of program delivery allows for practitioners currently working in the field to return to school and upgrade their skills without having to leave their job.

WORK EXPERIENCE
You will practice your skills, improve your techniques, and learn how to offer excellent customer service in our on-campus spa. With one state-of-the-art work station for every two students on average, you can be sure that you will have the opportunity to really gain in confidence as you practice current methods and techniques in use in the field. You will work directly with clients for approximately 28 weeks total throughout the program.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program will introduce you to the field of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning with an emphasis on renewable, sustainable and alternative energy efficient solutions.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Protecting the environment, reducing climate changes and increasing sustainable practices have contributed to the need for energy-efficient practices in the heating, refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
Our compressed three-semester program will prepare you for employment in this field:

  • Our program has been specifically designed to address the changing employment and environmental needs of the industry.
  • Our program provides you with theoretical and practical skills to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

The program is divided into three terms.

  • After successful completion of the provincial practical requirements at the end of term one, students can apply to write for Oil Burner Technician –Level 3 (OBT-3) and Gas Technician-Level 3 (G-3) certificates of qualification.
  • After successful completion of the provincial practical requirements at the end of term three, students can apply to write for Oil Burner Technician –Level 2 (OBT-2) and Gas Technician-Level 2 (G-2) certificates of qualification.

Students are required to attend 80% of all classes in order to write their TSSA Gas and Oil exams.

Gas and Oil Technician –Level 3 (OBT-3 and G-3) deals with workplace safety, tools, characteristics of natural gas and oil, codes/regulations, basic electricity, technical specifications, customer relations, basic piping systems, and an introduction to gas and oil appliances.

Gas and Oil Technician –Level 2 (OBT-2 and G-2) focuses on advanced piping/tubing systems, electricity, controls, systems, appliances, gas meters, pressure regulators, gas and oil -fired refrigerators, conversion burners, water heaters, forced warm air heating systems, hydronic heating systems, space heating, venting practices, forced air add-on devices, and air handling.

Graduates of this program will have an opportunity to obtain industry related health and safety certifications. You will also have Grade 12 Math equivalency.

Learn to program, support, and troubleshoot computer hardware and software in this four-semester program.

With this program, you will gain skills in computer networking and configuration, network security, and technical communications. You will also learn about solving computer problems that can cause both major costs and setbacks for businesses, whether due to a major hardware failure or a minor software incompatibility. Your core courses are complemented by training in oral and written communications, customer relations, and team work. Social Service Workers build and maintain relationships with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities; recognize and respond to individual, group, organizational and community injustices and inequalities; and provide direct services and/or a bridging to resources to improve the quality of peoples’ lives at the personal, cultural, and system levels. Social Service Workers provide these services in a range of residential and community settings while working with other professionals such as child and youth workers, addiction counsellors, teachers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and doctors.

The program is four semesters in length with classroom-based courses in the first three semesters and a block placement in the final semester. Applied learning activities are infused into our classroom-based courses such as:

  • Practicing interviewing and group facilitation skills for the purposes of engagement, assessment, goal planning and social support with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities;
  • Working in teams to plan on and off-campus events, fundraising campaigns, educational awareness days, and promotion of social change;
  • Conducting research to challenge forms of oppression as well as to design/develop/improve social service programs; and
  • Participating in self-care strategies for personal and professional well-being.

Building on the above knowledge and skills gained, a full-time placement in the fourth and final semester of the program provides a range of practice opportunities in a work setting (agency and location to be determined in consultation with the student, faculty, and available agency sites).

Fleming College's Social Service Worker program is well-known within the Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton counties and has established strong relationships with social service agencies in these specific locations. This is good choice for local people as well as for those that want to take advantage of smaller classes and more individually focussed learning.

The program's flexible delivery structure features entry points in the fall, winter, and spring with all four intakes running every semester. This meets the needs of diverse student groups including:

  • Students who require or wish a reduced course load
  • Students who want to complete the program faster can attend four continuous semesters and graduate in sixteen months
  • Winter intake, first semester students take second semester in the spring, third semester in the fall, and fourth semester in the winter. Spring first semester intake takes semester two in the fall, the third semester in the winter, and the fourth semester in the spring. Students starting in September complete the second semester in the Winter, the third semester in the Fall, and the forth semester in the Winter and take the summer semester off.
  • Individuals receiving funding that is dependent on attending classes continuously without semester breaks would start in the Winter or Spring semesters.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The fourth and final semester integrates learning in the form of a full-time placement and takes place in a work setting matching your learning needs and choice of location with consultation between the student, faculty, and available agency sites. Please be aware that 30 hours of volunteer service within an agency is required between entry into the SSW program and prior to entry into the fourth semester for placement and students must have successfully completed all first, second, and third semester courses prior to entry into fourth semester.

Specific agencies may have requirements such as proof of a current Emergency First Aid certification, CPR certification (Level C), a university degree, or additional immunizations. Also, some agencies may have required in-service training that the student must take prior to placement.
