The scope of border operations continues to expand as our economy becomes increasingly tied to the global marketplace. As cross border trade exceeds well over one billion dollars a day, our "smart border" needs to efficiently manage the flow of legitimate trade and travellers as we move toward an environment in which the exchange and use of electronic data between countries, and within Canada, becomes a permanent reality. The result is the continued growth of challenging new career opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) uses its front line law enforcement employees, Border Services Officers (BSOs), to fulfill its roles and responsibilities. The BSOs are trained to function as both a Customs and an Immigration official, depending upon the needs of the port of entry where they are employed. As Canada’s first line of defence, they are also trained and equipped to protect themselves and to ensure our overall safety and well-being.

The Customs Border Services program provides experiential, hands-on learning with real life enforcement tools such as a baggage x-ray machine, travellers’ baggage and a practice automobile, to help prepare you for common enforcement-related activities in the field with the CBSA. This training is also beneficial for the non-enforcement jobs found in the brokerage, consulting, transportation and private (import/export) industries. Throughout this program you will:

Learn the role and legislative jurisdiction of Customs, Immigration and Canadian Food Inspection (Border Services), including enforcement techniques and procedures.
Review Customs legislation, procedures and documentation, and Immigration legislation
Gain an appreciation for global diversity through additional study of the legislation and regulations relating to other government departments.
Develop the computer, communications, dispute resolution and critical thinking skills that today's employers are demanding both in the private and public sectors of Border Services in Canada.
At the conclusion of your regular courses and curriculum within the program, you will participate in a mandatory field placement (co-op) in a private industry/business, customs brokerage or public agency to gain valuable work experience that often results in an offer of employment if you meet their standards.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The Customs Border Services program’s field placement is five consecutive weeks in length; enough time to really get into the work you'll experience in your career. The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program will introduce you to the field of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning with an emphasis on renewable, sustainable and alternative energy efficient solutions.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Protecting the environment, reducing climate changes and increasing sustainable practices have contributed to the need for energy-efficient practices in the heating, refrigeration and air conditioning industry.
Our compressed three-semester program will prepare you for employment in this field:

• Our program has been specifically designed to address the changing employment and environmental needs of the industry.
• Our program provides you with theoretical and practical skills to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

The program is divided into three terms.

• After successful completion of the provincial practical requirements at the end of term one, students can apply to write for Oil Burner Technician –Level 3 (OBT-3) and Gas Technician-Level 3 (G-3) certificates of qualification.
• After successful completion of the provincial practical requirements at the end of term three, students can apply to write for Oil Burner Technician –Level 2 (OBT-2) and Gas Technician-Level 2 (G-2) certificates of qualification.

Students are required to attend 80% of all classes in order to write their TSSA Gas and Oil exams.

Gas and Oil Technician –Level 3 (OBT-3 and G-3) deals with workplace safety, tools, characteristics of natural gas and oil, codes/regulations, basic electricity, technical specifications, customer relations, basic piping systems, and an introduction to gas and oil appliances.

Gas and Oil Technician –Level 2 (OBT-2 and G-2) focuses on advanced piping/tubing systems, electricity, controls, systems, appliances, gas meters, pressure regulators, gas and oil -fired refrigerators, conversion burners, water heaters, forced warm air heating systems, hydronic heating systems, space heating, venting practices, forced air add-on devices, and air handling.

Graduates of this program will have an opportunity to obtain industry related health and safety certifications. You will also have Grade 12 Math equivalency.

This program will provide you with a variety of trade-specific skills, introducing you to installing, maintaining and repairing piping systems in residential, commercial and industrial settings, to enhance opportunities for employment.

In the two-semester Mechanical Techniques - Plumbing program, you will learn to:

• Identify and install common plumbing fixtures in our multi-story KUBE structure
• Assemble various piping systems related to plumbing
• Interpret and create drawings, estimates and material lists
• Develop competencies in venting, waste and drainage systems
• Examine concepts in water and wastewater systems, including operations, backflow and cross connection

Over four semesters, you will progressively develop skills and knowledge in fitness assessment and exercise programming, nutrition, health promotion, leadership and self-development, business planning and lifestyle consulting. Field Placement opportunities will provide you with workplace experience supervised by trained professionals and leaders in the fitness industry. Placements can be tailored to your specific career goals or future university plans. For example, students have requested placements in hospitals, corporate sites, fitness facilities, chiropractic or physiotherapy settings, and non-profit organizations such as Diabetes Canada and Osteoporosis Canada.
