Overview

Humber’s Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion diploma program prepares you for a career promoting health and wellness to individuals and groups of all ages, and encouraging people to live a healthier lifestyle. Unique in nature, it is the only diploma program of its kind in Canada. In this program you will:

  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of general and clinical nutrition, sport nutrition and physiology
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience coaching and conducting health promotion seminars and workshops in our unique Humber Centre for Healthy Living
  • Learn how to relate knowledge of essential nutrients into practical nutritious eating for clients by discovering the techniques of healthy cooking, food demonstration, recipe development and menu planning
  • Nutritionally assess and analyze menus and recipes integrating financial, health and culinary criteria

You will have the opportunity to join student branches of the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals (CAFP). As student members, you will build on your networking skills in foodservice organizations and have the opportunity to apply to association-sponsored bursaries and scholarships.

This innovative program will provide you with the education and experience to work in the rapidly growing health and wellness industries. The curriculum is founded on evidence-based nutrition information and is taught by registered dietitians and other regulated health-care professionals.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Conduct assessments of nutritional status, well-being, and lifestyle for clients low to moderate risk and effectively communicate assessment results.
  • Apply knowledge of fundamental and clinical nutrition to prescribe appropriate diets, active living, and lifestyle programs to enhance nutritional status, health, and well-being of clients of low to moderate risk.
  • Utilize appropriate interviewing and behavior change coaching and counseling skills to promote or enhance nutritional status, health, active living, and well-being of clients.
  • Collaborate with individuals in the selection and adoption of strategies to improve their nutritional status, health, and well-being.
  • Develop, revise and evaluate food items, recipes, and menus to maximize the nutritional content of healthy eating plans.
  • Apply knowledge of the global food supply, sustainability and food technology in the development and revision of recipes, menus and healthy eating plans for individual and groups of clients.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs and events which respond to identified needs and interests of clients and maximize the benefits of diet, health, and well-being.
  • Contribute to community health promotion strategies to improve the health of individuals, groups, organizations and institutions.

Work Placement
All students will complete a 15-week experiential learning course involving our on-campus Humber Centre for Healthy Living. Components of this placement include:

  • Nutrition awareness events: students develop and deliver group educational workshops, displays and sessions for community, business and industry partners in various settings
  • Practising nutrition coaching to Humber students and staff: students provide nutrition education for clients and support them in developing and achieving their health and nutrition related goals. This includes diet assessment, recommendations and development of a client tool kit

Humber’s Web Development graduate certificate program focuses on the development of websites and web services for multiple environments including database-driven programming, content management and mobile services. A combination of conceptual and practical training will prepare you to execute effective, efficient website design.

Work completed individually and in teams will simulate the real-world work environment and hone collaborative and teamwork skills. In Humber’s Radio and Media Production graduate certificate program, students develop the skills to make entertaining and engaging broadcasts and podcasts. Imagine combining the experience of your degree or diploma with new skills in audio storytelling and broadcasting. Graduates of our program are working in all aspects of radio and podcast production across Canada. Many are instrumental in some of Canada's most popular podcasts, and some have been recognized at the 2019 Canadian Podcasting Awards.
Students get hands-on experience in radio and audio production studio techniques; on-air announcing, newscast performance and sports reporting; hosting live music and public affairs programs; writing stories, shows, commercials and scripts, radio programming and promotions; interviewing techniques and more. They produce exciting audio and visual content including video and podcasts in Humber’s leading-edge production studios.
Students learn about the latest trends and developments in broadcasting and podcasting, and prepare for careers in media production including on-air, on-camera, online and social media.  They create original digital audio content and experience the thrill of having their work distributed by broadcast on the radio, podcast streaming or other means including social media.
Students take intensive classes and workshops with expert faculty where they apply their new skills to studio and broadcast operations.  By second semester, students can choose to perform live in our streaming or broadcast radio stations as a music host, newscaster or announcer. Hands-on training in on-air performance is provided through Humber’s student radio station, on 96.9FM, which is also streamed online and through various listening apps. Alternatively, students can choose to focus on creative studio production techniques and on-air operations.
Work Placement
This program includes a work placement component to give students an opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in their area of interest in the radio and audio production industries. The 160 hour placement is done in the summer semester after two semesters of study and practice.

Humber’s Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program emphasizes electronic products, control systems and telecommunications - all built on a strong basis of computer and networking engineering. The program provides you with hands-on experience of electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits. Our experienced faculty will teach you about computer programming, interfacing, local networks, radio frequency circuits, basic programmable logic controllers (PLC), industrial electronics, wired and wireless communication devices, and troubleshooting techniques. An intensive, behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting will give you a solid grounding in video production skills and broadcast standards. This program is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to work behind the scenes in television production and features a wide variety of courses, as well as field experience opportunities, empowering graduates for success in the broadcast industry.

Humber has a strong reputation in the television broadcasting industry.BRTV students regularly produce and live stream Humber Hawks varsity games and esport tournaments. The program is designed in collaboration with industry, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In this program, you will learn:

  • The developmental stages across the lifespan, and the communication and interpersonal skills needed for effective client relationships
  • The essentials of providing personal care, applying mobility techniques (lifting and transferring clients), and household management and safety
  • Key issues of mental health disorders

Work Placement

  • Two unpaid work placements take place in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In Semester 1, the practicum is completed in a controlled lab environment for six hours per week. This practicum is fully supervised by one instructor per group of approximately ten students. In Semester 2, the practicum is completed at a variety of agencies and facilities.
  • The Semester 2 practicum is divided into two rotations over the 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. Students begin placement in the first week of January.
  • Placements give you valuable first-hand experience which will serve you well when beginning your career.

Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma program gives you a thorough knowledge of materials and mechanical solutions for designing and manufacturing mechanical parts and assemblies. You will learn in Humber’s state-of-the-art labs, offering you the practical experience you need to succeed. Courses focus on:

  • Mechanical operations
  • Programming of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam

Begin a career designing and manufacturing with our Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma. Humber’s Project Management graduate certificate program will prepare you to manage complex projects and programs. Given the recognition that project management skills and competencies have to the success of all organizations, this program attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds and industries whether public, private or not-for-profit sectors.

In just two semesters, you will learn the skills needed to move a project through conceptualization, initiation, planning, execution, control and closing. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry and closely aligned to the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as international best practices. Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming.
