Overview

Humber’s Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program provides you with the skills needed for a career in the growing field of civil infrastructure. Infrastructure encompasses all of the essential elements necessary for society to operate including buildings, transportation (highways and transit), municipal services (water, wastewater) and green spaces.

The curriculum, designed in collaboration with industry, covers all aspects of infrastructure, from the inception of an idea to the completion of construction, and blends in-class academic learning with hands-on laboratory work. You will learn how to design structural steel, reinforced concrete and timber structures. Municipal services (water, wastewater) and water supply management will be explored. Transportation infrastructure and highway design will be studied using design codes and standards. Additionally, you will learn all the skills necessary to support design and construction including surveying, geomatics, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), drafting (AutoCAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM)), soils and materials testing, project administration and management, and environmental protection and remediation. Our courses are taught by experienced faculty and industry experts many of whom work with Greater Toronto Area construction and engineering firms. The Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning Ontario Graduate Certificate was developed to fill the need for a growing and in-demand skillset. Designed for students with experience in computer programming, software development or computer science, students learn the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to apply AI models and ML algorithms to a broad range of practical applications including natural language processing, image processing, computer vision and for business decision making. Diploma in Pharmacy Technician

Humber’s Pharmacy Technician diploma program prepares graduates for various careers in pharmacy including community, hospital, industry and long-term care settings.
Enjoy hands-on learning in simulated labs with low student/teacher ratios and expert faculty who are active in the pharmacy profession. In addition, learn from guest speakers who are pharmaceutical industry experts.

Courses are designed in consultation with practising pharmacy professionals and focus on key competency categories such as legal and ethical responsibilities, patient care, product distribution, health promotion, knowledge application, communication, intra- and inter-professional collaboration, and error prevention. Students apply their learning in simulated labs and during placements, providing valuable real-life experience.

Work Placement
Students will complete two unpaid four-week work placements under the supervision of a pharmacist/technician in Semester 4: one in a retail/community pharmacy and one in a hospital pharmacy setting. Students will be offered a selection of approved placement sites and will rank their preferences. Every effort will be made to place students at one of their preferred sites. Hospital pharmacy placements may be outside of the Greater Toronto area. The placements provide important workplace experience and industry contacts.

Humber's Fire Services diploma program teaches you the theory of fire science, fire prevention, safety, and physical and mental health while working in a collaborative environment. You will gain a well-rounded education in fire services and will acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required by fire and emergency services. You will also develop personal resilience strategies to manage the rigours of this career.

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering - Information Systems Engineering discipline prepares you for an interdisciplinary field of study that encompasses rapidly changing, evolving and converging areas of computer, software, networking, telecommunications, mobile applications, internet and cyber security. Following the first year, the curriculum covers the core courses in various subjects such as digital systems, operating systems, embedded systems, communication engineering, software engineering, mobile applications and systems, and more. In the third year, the program branches out to two specializations, Internet of Things (IoT), and Data Network and Security, with eight specialization courses in each. 

The program also provides project-based learning, experiential learning with hands-on and practical training, applied research opportunities, and work-integrated learning activities. Humber’s Recreation and Leisure Services diploma program provides you with skills needed to start your career in government, not-for-profit and commercial recreation organizations. You will learn about recreation programming, special event management, staff management, facility operations, marketing and other services within the industry.

The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring it is current and relevant. Within the program, students use ActiveNet software and PerfectMind, the most widely used registration management software in the recreation industry.

Students apply their skills by planning and implementing events for local community and charity organizations. A three-day leadership camp at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre helps build communication and leadership skills while guest speakers, practical training and field trips provide added benefits in preparing you for the workplace.

Learning from professors, as well as managers and directors of recreation programs, centres and agencies will give you valuable exposure to the industry and training in current issues.

Work Placement

  • Qualified students will complete a work placement in Semester 4 – three days per week for 15 weeks (total of 250 hours). The school works with the student to find a placement with an industry partner. The placement occurs across industry sectors including professional sport associations, community and amateur sport governing bodies, and private sector sport organizations. Diploma in Paralegal Education

Humber’s Paralegal Education diploma program explores the theoretical, procedural and advocacy aspects of law that may be handled by a paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. You will learn specialized practical skills within the areas of advocacy, legal research, specific courts and administrative tribunals. The course of studies includes business, criminal summary convictions, landlord and tenant, employment law, and alternative dispute resolution. Students will develop strong oral advocacy skills by participating in class and in role plays, as well as in presentations and mock trials before their peers and large audiences.

Courses in ethics and the rules of professional conduct, accounting and entrepreneurship prepare you to create and manage your own paralegal practice.

During the program, you will develop strong communication skills particularly in spoken and written English, essential skills for your future career. Students are required to demonstrate competency in small and large group oral presentations including role plays and mock trials in order to graduate.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Humber’s Bachelor of Health Sciences – Workplace Health and Wellness degree program is a unique honours degree program, the first of its kind in Canada. You will explore various industry-specific areas including the most current developments in evidence-based interprofessional practice.

This program is multi-disciplinary in nature, drawing from the fields of leadership; mental, physical, and psychological health; business and communication; and knowledge translation. All combined, students acquire the competencies to develop proactive, evidence-based workplace health and wellness programs and health promotion programs. You will develop the skills to promote employee health, workplace culture, employee engagement and retention.

Principles of equity, wellness coaching, diversity, ethical and legal practices, and knowledge translation are the foundation of your learning. A team approach to learning collaboratively is key and is emphasized in the classroom.

The placement will occur in diverse settings such as for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, health and wellness consulting firms, governmental or educational institutions, or other health and wellness environments.

The experience will enhance the theoretical learning in the program, giving you hands-on skills. Work placement experiences might include successfully developing, evaluating and implementing a workplace health and wellness initiative; functioning as a member of a health and promotion team; working at a public health organization in knowledge translation; working in insurance companies and with workplace insurance claims; and health promotion within a long-term care facility.

Humber’s Business Administration – Professional Golf Management advanced diploma program provides a solid foundation of transferable business skills in accounting, communications, computer applications, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, human resources, law, marketing, management, mathematics, statistics and business strategy. Then it adds industry-specific skills and knowledge you will need to start your career in this dynamic industry including courses in golf operations, principles of golf, turf management, golf course design, bar and restaurant operations, retail management, and tournament operations and event planning.

Our students have access to our world-class Golf Lab facility, including three golf simulator bays, putting green, golf club build and repair shop, and proshop. Within this facility, our students will gain hands-on experience with the latest golf technology, software and equipment. Our program runs annually on a 6-month in-class/6-month paid work placement schedule - the only one of this kind in Canada, and a key differentiating factor from other programs. Work placements combine the knowledge and skills you develop in the classroom with practical experience you will gain during your paid work placement.

Humber’s Project Management graduate certificate program will prepare you to manage complex projects and programs. Given the recognition that project management skills and competencies have to the success of all organizations, this program attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds and industries whether public, private or not-for-profit sectors.

In just two semesters, you will learn the skills needed to move a project through conceptualization, initiation, planning, execution, control and closing. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry and closely aligned to the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as international best practices. You will thoroughly explore the key stages of the project life cycle, project economics and financial analysis, procurement management, leadership skills and professional best practices through a comprehensive project delivery model. It also exposes students to the adaptive/Agile approach to project management and the various frameworks that fall under the Agile umbrella. Students learn about trends in project management including cutting edge technology and electives in areas such as public sector, information technology, construction and strategic portfolio management.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
    • Link projects with the organization’s strategic plans, documenting the business need and justification for the project.
    • Define and manage the overall scope of the project, documenting project goals, deliverables, constraints, performance criteria and resource requirements in consultation with project stakeholders.
    • Develop a comprehensive project plan.
    • Integrate project functions, making tradeoffs among competing objectives and alternatives in order to meet or exceed project objectives.
    • Implement planning and control procedures, resource management, and risk management plans.
    • Employ a range of methodologies, techniques and tools available to project managers.
    • Develop, implement and analyze key financial information, translating financial information into project terms and establishing financial benchmarks.
    • Identify, analyze and refine project costs to produce a budget and control project costs.
    • Determine quality requirements and implement quality assessment activities.
    • Identify and allocate human resources required to manage project tasks, both within the core project team and the broader organization.
    • Manage communications to ensure the timely and appropriate generation, collection, dissemination, storage and disposition of project information to aid in the achievement of project objectives.
    • Identify potential risk events, monitor and control project risk, and assess risk management outcomes.
    • Identify procurement requirements, establish procurement processes, and implement and evaluate contracts.
    • Monitor project progress, identify variances and take timely action to deal with problems and opportunities.
    • Anticipate and respond to challenges inherent in complex projects.
    • Develop creative and flexible solutions that bring projects in on time and within budget.
    • Adhere to legal requirements and ethical standards.
    • Interact with team and stakeholders in a professional manner, respecting differences, to ensure a collaborative project management environment.
