Fashion is an international business, and Humber’s Fashion Arts and Business diploma program places an emphasis on retail operations from both domestic and international perspectives. You will study marketing, store planning and merchandising, brand management, marketing, social media, event planning, and retail buying. You’ll also learn fashion trend forecasting, sales techniques, and colour and styling analysis while attaining basic knowledge of fashion products and fashion promotion. These skills are then applied to product launches, planning merchandise assortments, styling fashion shoots and the production of fashion events.

Humber’s Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology advanced diploma program provides you with comprehensive knowledge of energy systems used for commercial and industrial complexes. As you progress through the program, you will learn to apply engineering principles and conventions to achieve optimal energy efficiency through a process of evaluation, monitoring, load evaluation through software modelling, direct digital control (DDC), assessment and necessary corrective action.
Our program features an optional, paid work placement directly related to your program of study. The work experience is designed to enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in an actual work environment, as well as enhance your employability upon graduation. The work placement takes place after the completion of Semester 4, for a minimum of 400 hours. Participating students are required to complete work preparation sessions prior to the work term to help them develop an industry specific resumé and effective interviewing skills. Humber provides a range of services to support student success including working with business, industry and government to identify employment opportunities.

Up to 20 per cent of the cost of constructing a new commercial building can be attributed to heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment. The push for greater energy efficiency is creating exciting opportunities for professionals who apply the effective and appropriate handling of energy to the design, installation and operation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HRAC) systems. Opportunities exist in the commercial and industrial sectors, as well as in various levels of government departments. As a journalism student, you’ll be given training in hands-on skills that are at the forefront of what’s happening in the industry today including reporting the news, creating broadcast stories, writing feature articles, capturing high quality images and creating compelling digital presentations. Humber’s Electrical Engineering Technician – Control Systems diploma program focuses on three major concentrations in electrical engineering:

• Power industry
• Process instrumentation
• Programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Our courses are designed in collaboration with an industry advisory panel, ensuring you learn current and relevant material. The program blends classroom theory with laboratory work on subjects such as electric devices and circuits, digital and programming fundamentals, power generation and distribution, electrical computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), electrical code, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and technical communications.

Complex and challenging assignments prepare you for the realities of a control systems and electrical engineering career. The program is designed in collaboration with industry, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In this program, you will learn:

• The developmental stages across the lifespan, and the communication and interpersonal skills needed for effective client relationships
• The essentials of providing personal care, applying mobility techniques (lifting and transferring clients), and household management and safety
• Key issues of mental health disorders
• Skills in dealing with common medical conditions including facilitating rehabilitation exercises and assisting with medications

Through assisting individuals at a long-term care facility and in other settings, you will learn to recognize the physical and emotional changes of aging and illness, and become familiar with the restorative techniques used to maximize independence.

Work Placement

• Two unpaid work placements take place in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In Semester 1, the practicum is completed in a controlled lab environment for six hours per week. This practicum is fully supervised by one instructor per group of approximately ten students. In Semester 2, the practicum is completed at a variety of agencies and facilities.
• The Semester 2 practicum is divided into two rotations over the 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. Students begin placement in the first week of January.
• Placements give you valuable first-hand experience which will serve you well when beginning your career.

Humber’s Project Management graduate certificate program will prepare you to manage complex projects and programs. Given the recognition that project management skills and competencies have to the success of all organizations, this program attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds and industries whether public, private or not-for-profit sectors.

In just two semesters, you will learn the skills needed to move a project through conceptualization, initiation, planning, execution, control and closing. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry and closely aligned to the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as international best practices. You will thoroughly explore the key stages of the project life cycle, project economics and financial analysis, procurement management, leadership skills and professional best practices through a comprehensive project delivery model. It also exposes students to the adaptive/Agile approach to project management and the various frameworks that fall under the Agile umbrella. Students learn about trends in project management including cutting edge technology and electives in areas such as public sector, information technology, construction and strategic portfolio management.

This program builds on skills learned in the Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program and will prepare you to work in all fields where electric circuits and systems are found. You will acquire strong fundamental knowledge to help you build a career in all new and emerging technologies manufactured here in North America like photonics, laser technology, medical imaging, new electronic materials and devices, intelligent systems, entertainment, and broadcasting systems. The program takes a system design and integration approach to electronic applications, and you will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in:

• Electronic circuits: analog, digital, radio-frequency and programmable circuits
• Connectivity and interface design, embedded microcontrollers, IoT integration
• The full skill set of computer networking including wireless networks
• Wireless telecommunications, antennas, waveguides and transmission lines

We have designed the curriculum in collaboration with an advisory panel comprising highly successful industry experts in order to ensure you are learning the most up-to-date, relevant material. You will spend approximately half your time in labs working with electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits and learning how to embed these circuits into cell phones, audio equipment, high-definition (HD) video systems, robots, computers and advanced instruments.

This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession. For students who are accepted into the program, three co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and then two consecutive four-month work terms between Semesters 4 and 5. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply.  While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) reports that 75 per cent of the new jobs created between 2009 and 2018 are in high-skill, high-tech occupations. This demand will only grow as technology continues to advance and change the way we live and work especially in industrially dynamic regions such as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Our graduates work at major organizations such as CTV and CBC, Ontario Power Generation, Hydro One, Rogers, Telus and Bell, as well as BlackBerry, Celestica, and GE Canada, to mention just a few. They put the skills to work in research and development where they build prototypes and test new devices. They are manufacturers’ representatives, technical salespeople, managers and entrepreneurs. Humber’s Journalism graduate certificate program will immerse you in advanced research, writing and interview practices, data mining techniques, and a range of storytelling approaches for work within a multiplatform journalistic or information-gathering environment. You will also have the opportunity to pursue discipline-specific reporting in areas such as science, business, sports and the arts.

Using the latest technologies, the program will focus on training graduates for the field of journalism with an emphasis on digital journalism. Graduates will be able to function in a digital/online environment including social media and data-based journalism. An emphasis will be placed on providing you with opportunities to practise and develop your journalism skills through coverage of live field events.

Work Placement

Humber’s Architectural Technology advanced diploma program will train you to use your logical and critical thinking skills as you apply architectural technology to construction and building design. You’ll learn from full-time, award-winning professors and licensed architects who bring real-life perspective and valuable industry contacts to you. The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In the program, you will learn:

• Computer-aided drawing, building methods and project management using the most current computer programs such as AutoCAD and Revit (Building Information Modelling)

Get hands-on experience in the architectural technology industry during an optional architectural field placement. The placement normally takes place from May through August following semester four (minimum 400 hours).
