Overview

Humber’s Sport Business Management graduate certificate program prepares you for employment within the broader areas of sport, with particular emphasis on management in the industry. You will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as the structure and functionality of the Canadian sport industry, sport marketing, sales, sponsorship, communications, sport hosting, event planning and management. Work Placement

  • The work placement consists of two components and occurs across industry sectors including professional and amateur sport, sport governing bodies, sport marketing and event management companies, community and private sector sport organizations. The placement provides valuable experience and industry contacts. The first component of the placement is concurrent with coursework and is a minimum of 210 hours. The second component of the placement is six weeks in length and a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Humber’s Construction Engineering Technology program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Building Construction Technician diploma, the program introduces you to the carpentry trade, gives you practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from various certificate and diploma programs into the advanced diploma program (including Carpentry and Renovation Technician, Industrial Woodworking Technician, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, and Building Construction Technician).

The advanced diploma program is designed to explore the construction industry from an engineering and management perspective. You will become familiar with the strategies required for project planning and execution for the commercial-based industry.

Humber's Fire Services diploma program teaches you the theory of fire science, fire prevention, safety, and physical and mental health while working in a collaborative environment. You will learn the basics of plumbing including theory, code and blueprints, as well as gain significant hands-on experience. Water, waste and sewage systems – hallmarks of urban living – require high-level skills to design, install and maintain. In the Plumbing Techniques certificate program, you’ll be introduced to the skills necessary to begin your career as a plumber. Graduates of this program may find a range of career opportunities including apprenticeship, construction industry work, green energy initiatives, and municipal water and sewage treatment. According to BuildForce Canada, an estimated 248,000 construction workers are expected to retire over the next decade. Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering – Mechatronics discipline gives you hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. You can choose from focused study in either robotics or embedded systems. During the course of the program, students will solve real industry and community problems and gain knowledge and skills in mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering. Students use emerging and cutting edge technologies in robotics, control, electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), motors, mechanical components, digital and analog circuits, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), machine learning, modelling, simulation, embedded systems, and advanced manufacturing. Each of these themes provides theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on training to complement a systems-thinking approch to solving real world problems. 

In addition, this program provides an opportunity to work on industry-led projects through multidisciplinary capstone projects as well as applied research opportunities. Through these experiences, students apply the theoretical knowledge gained during their education to solve real industry problems, while improving their professional skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration and problem-solving. 

This program is also offered at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Students in the program will collaborate on activities using technology that will involve simultaneous learning at both colleges. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.

Humber’s Computer Engineering Technology advanced diploma program trains you to develop and design the cutting-edge technologies that propel most businesses and governments around the world.

You will be taught by industry experts, in small classes, skills in hardware and software, electronics and networking, plus a variety of systems. As well, you will learn to upgrade and incorporate new technological advances into existing systems.

The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring you are learning the skills that companies require. The program features courses in programming; electronics; networks set up and programming; Linux/Ubuntu installation and configuration; and the network services that lay the groundwork to build software skills and expertise in data communications, networking and security. You’ll develop, install and operate computer embedded and network systems; work on various network protocols and microcontrollers; and learn to refine and develop current applications.

In your final year, you will focus on integrating all your skills by examining the inner workings of networks using different application programming interfaces (APIs) to build network applications, comparing different computer architectures and completing a major project using an embedded system.

Optional Co-op
This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. Humber’s award-winning Multimedia Design and Development diploma program offers the opportunity to participate in an extensive multimedia design education where you’ll build a range of interactive digital media production skills including web design, mobile interface design, experience design, motion graphics, 2D animation, web coding, streaming, user testing, video and sound editing, user interface prototyping, digital storytelling, and interactive design. Through this hands-on learning process, you will develop the fundamental creative and technical multimedia design and development capabilities needed to pursue employment in videography, motion graphics, web design and interactive content development.

Multimedia Design and Development is one of the three programs within our interaction and design common platform cluster. The first semester of this program is shared with the three-year Web Design and Interactive Media program, and the three-year Graphic Design program. This offers you exposure to the different areas of programming, common elements of design and creative thinking, and collaborative work with students studying to work in complementary career fields. Greater exposure to the ever-evolving exciting world of design and development will allow you to investigate the edges of this area of study, and then you will confirm your focus prior to your second semester of study. 

Under the guidance of experienced and knowledgeable professors, you’ll learn on and become experienced with industry-standard software such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Adobe Brackets, Illustrator, After Effects, Audition, Adobe Animate, Final Cut Pro and Premiere. Web technologies such as HTML5, Extensible Markup Language (XML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS3), JavaScript, jQuery and Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) and MySQL are employed in hands-on learning situations in our applied teaching environment with relevant industry projects.

You will cultivate important collaborative teamwork and project management skills through group assignments both within this program, and through interdisciplinary work with students in sister programs. This will prepare you for collaborative projects in the field and help you gain real-world perspective on the nature of multimedia work. You will be prepared to pursue new media opportunities by developing a comprehensive portfolio that you can present to potential employers or clients, and have exposure to the entrepreneurial opportunities open to professionals in this rich field. Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
  • Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
    • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
    • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
    • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
  • Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice.
  • Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language.
  • Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts.
  • Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner.
  • Engage in, and plan for, ongoing personal and professional development, networking/community relations and inter- professional collaboration.
  • Provide effective leadership and contribute to the supervision and mentoring of all team members, including licensees, support staff, and/or interns in a professional, caring and creative manner through providing appropriate direction as it relates to the delivery of funeral service.
  • Lead, establish, maintain and participate effectively in funeral establishment work teams consisting of licensees, support staff and/or interns demonstrating at all times the ability to learn, grow and work together.
  • Care for and handle the deceased respectfully and safely at all times.
  • Complete and perform effectively and efficiently all non-embalming preparation processes and arterial embalming and restoration processes.
  • Direct funeral services and visitation in a respectful and sensitive manner consistent with the direction of the legal representative.
  • Complete prepaid contract related documents and related financial matters in accordance with applicable legislation.
  • Coordinate and deliver the selected disposition services and follow up services, effectively, professionally and consistent with, and supportive of, the wishes of the legal representative.
  • Make decisions ethically and professionally based on a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required of an owner/manager of the applicable business licence class pursuant to the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA).

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Certificate in Personal Support Worker

Humber’s Personal Support Worker certificate program gives you the skills you need for a career in this in-demand health-care field. Begin a rewarding career helping people in need such as the elderly, the chronically ill and people with physical disabilities.

The program is designed in collaboration with industry, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In this program, you will learn:

  • The developmental stages across the lifespan, and the communication and interpersonal skills needed for effective client relationships
  • The essentials of providing personal care, applying mobility techniques (lifting and transferring clients), and household management and safety
  • Key issues of mental health disorders
  • Skills in dealing with common medical conditions including facilitating rehabilitation exercises and assisting with medications

Through assisting individuals at a long-term care facility and in other settings, you will learn to recognize the physical and emotional changes of aging and illness, and become familiar with the restorative techniques used to maximize independence.

Work Placement

  • Two unpaid work placements take place in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). In Semester 1, the practicum is completed in a controlled lab environment for six hours per week. This practicum is fully supervised by one instructor per group of approximately ten students. In Semester 2, the practicum is completed at a variety of agencies and facilities.
  • The Semester 2 practicum is divided into two rotations over the 13 weeks: 160 hours in a long-term care facility and 120 hours in a community agency. Hours and number of days per week vary depending on the type of facility and shifts assigned; most range from seven to eight hours per day or evening. Students begin placement in the first week of January.
  • Placements give you valuable first-hand experience which will serve you well when beginning your career.
