Experiential learning
Learning emphasizes practical hands-on work during a major carpentry, new construction or renovation building project:

• Practise your skills in carpentry and construction including, rough carpentry/framing, finish carpentry, base footings, insulation, vapour and air barriers, drywalling, window and door installation, interior and exterior finishes, fine finishing techniques, and roofing.
• Study building codes, work from blueprints, produce basic sketches, develop building details and create computer-assisted drawings using AutoCAD and SketchUp.
• Receive hands-on instruction in environmentally sound construction techniques, proper tool usage and jobsite safety.
• Second-year students develop advanced techniques in sustainable and alternative building, sustainable construction, green build and healthy homes, i.e., low VOC (volatile organic compounds), electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.  
• Obtain industry-required certificates such as Working at Heights and First Aid.

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next-generation robotics.

Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

Gain the knowledge and in-demand skills needed to become an industry-ready IT security professional. Graduates of this two-year post-graduate program will be equipped to help organizations prevent fraud, data breaches and other vulnerabilities. As a graduate of Loyalist's full-time Cyber Security post-graduate program, you may be eligible to advance your profession through the following certification pathways: CompTIA Security+, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Cyber Security, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) and Certified Associate in Python Programming (PCAP).

Experiential Learning, including a semester-long co-op experience

• With this hands-on program, gain the knowledge and skills needed to protect and support organizations’ cyber security needs:
  • Learn how to develop, implement and evaluate cyber security solutions to protect organizations from internal and external threats.
  • Practise assessing defensive programming and cyber security strategies, and gain experience recommending security controls for the effective maintenance and deployment of cyber security solutions to protect systems and information.
  • Acquire skills for designing and implementing cyber security polices and strategies using project management principles.
  • Develop strategies for optimizing the effectiveness of the information security in a business environment through risk mitigation and information systems auditing.
  • Explore designing and implementing vulnerability assessment procedures to identify and solve existing network security issues.
  • Get first-hand workplace experience during a co-op in semester four.

Explore topics such as planning and coordination, legislative frameworks, risk and assessment, incident management systems, incident response and crisis communications to prepare for a career providing management expertise in a range of emergency situations.

• Learn how to develop, review and update emergency policies and programs based upon relevant legislation, standards and procedures, and what is required to conduct effective hazards identification and risk assessments.
• Explore developing, conducting and evaluating training programs and exercises to test current emergency management programs while assessing the integration and compatibility of various emergency polices, plans and procedures.
• Develop strategies for implementing and maintaining a business continuity plan that will ensure the recovery of normal operations for affected businesses and industries.
• Get an introduction to coordinating the development and administration of public awareness and education programs, emergency information and media relations programs.

Radiation safety protection personnel monitor and control radiation exposure while implementing safety measures. Prepare for a career working together with physicists, occupational safety and health specialists, and public health officials in various nuclear, health care and natural environments.

A horticultural technician works with plants and has knowledge and skills in ornamental horticulture and plant health care. Using tools and machinery, this person installs, grows and maintains indoor and outdoor plants; builds urban and rural landscapes; maintains outdoor properties; cares for turf grass and golf courses; and installs and maintains irrigation systems. The fundamentals of grounds keeping, including safe snow and ice removal, as well as sustainable agriculture practices and green technologies are also introduced.

Public relations and event management professionals are increasingly in demand as employers recognize the value of effective communications. A career in PR and event management is never dull! From one day to the next you could be pitching a story, staging a news conference, organizing an event or managing crisis communications.

• Stage a mock disaster during Crisis Communications Week.
• Plan and host special events such as concerts and wine tastings in neighbouring Prince Edward County.

• Gain valuable field or field-related experience in two separate placements.
• Practise interpreting and applying the law from class to courtroom.
• Participate in a mock trial in a real courtroom with real judges.
• Role-play different scenarios using uniforms and police training equipment.
• Volunteer with police services in roles which have included emergency response training, front line officer training, mock disaster participation, and community policing activities.
• Learn to put personal safety and respect for victims into practice.
