Experiential learning

• Creative problem solving and real-world skills will build the buildings and cities of the future. In this program, students will learn the significance of architecture to human culture and how buildings are designed, developed and constructed.
• Learning combines studio work, classroom instruction and field trips to study the design and construction of major construction and renovation projects – working independently and in teams.
• Develop skills in manual and computer design and drafting (CADD), and then create 3D models using the latest software in our state-of-the-art design studios.
• During independent design projects, students determine a structure’s physical needs, and design solutions that creatively address the use of space, materials, codes, structure, construction methods, zoning and the environment.
• There will be an optional work integrated learning opportunity upon completion of semester four.
• In their last year, Technology students use 3D modelling software to design a public facility in a local community.

Applicants come from across Canada for the "triple threat skill set" of multimedia storytelling through digital photography, video capture, and news and feature-writing.

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that employs images in order to tell a news story. ... Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media, and help communities connect with one other.

Experiential Learning
Get a well-rounded set of skills through hands-on learning in our Digital Media Centre:

• Develop skills in reporting, writing, electronic publishing, camera operation and lighting.
• Get a deep understanding of news judgment and the principles of storytelling.
• Learn advanced photojournalism techniques in digital photography, video capture and computer-based image processing.
• Get hands-on experience working for Loyalist’s award-winning online community newspaper, the Pioneer.
• Photograph, report, write and edit assignments for the student-run online news service, QNet News.

This program will prepare you to create engaging content and deliver it through any medium. Earn a full spectrum of skills — ranging from television production and digital filmmaking to web streaming and interactive content creation. No BYOD costs. We provide digital camera, audio, lighting and grip equipment. No fully loaded MacBook Pro requirements either. Loyalist College offers the use of Mac and PC labs with relevant software to help you complete your work.

Experiential learning

• Provide well-rounded skills by performing all production and crew functions in studio, field and post-production environments.
• Specialize with crew rotations in your area of interest and choose specific roles in digital filmmaking, remote event production and content creation for clients.
• Produce creative, interactive content on multiple platforms, broadcasting across Canada and to the world.
• Participate in studio tours and seminars such as the TIFF Bell Lightbox Series.
• Scripts written in the first year and developed in the second come to life on the big screen in the final year with a public screening

Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) are in demand in virtually every field, including public accounting, industry, arts and entertainment, as well as not-for-profit sectors. Develop the technical foundations in financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and more that you need for a successful career as a professional accountant. In the Ontario Tech University BCOM Stream program, you can earn a diploma and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in just four years.

Earn five Ontario Tech University BCOM credits during your two-year diploma studies at Loyalist and gain direct entry to third-year degree studies in the Ontario Tech University Faculty of Business and Information Technology.

• Build on your studies at Loyalist with further study at Ontario Tech University in advanced auditing, information systems, financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and financial statement analysis.
• Eligible students can apply to the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting major, which is aligned with CPA Ontario for entry into the CPA Professional Education Program.

Experiential Learning

• This program delivers concrete, marketable skills with a dual focus on financial and management accounting. Develop managerial skills in budgeting, product costing and price setting, eliminating financial waste, and finding operating efficiencies.
• Develop solid skills in industry-leading software such as MS Excel, Sage 50, and EFILE.
• Collaborate and formulate strategy in simulated business competitions.
• Learn from case studies and guest speakers from the local business community.
• Put your skills to work in Loyalist’s student-run tax clinic. For the 2016 tax year, students completed more than 200 returns — putting more than $245,000 back in the hands of Loyalist students.

Get a well-rounded education in math, science, business and communication skills, not to mention the freedom to choose from an outstanding line-up of courses. Define your interests, opportunities and goals while earning credits you can transfer to future studies.

• Learn with a mix of group assignments, community projects and online class activities.
• Work one-on-one with a faculty advisor each semester to select electives suitable to you — go broad or specialize — it’s up to you.
• Choose from a wide range of electives, and explore opportunities you may not even know, with options as wide-ranging as human biology, computer applications, psychology, technology and humanity.
• Some electives are available online or offer virtual learning experiences, such as the Ecowalk.
• Gain work experience one day a week in your second semester.
• Expand your on-the-job experiences to two days a week in the third semester.
• Past placements include museums, art galleries, funeral homes, veterinary offices, long-term care facilities, schools and social service agencies.
• General Arts & Science (year two): After one year of vocational exploration, prepare for university studies during year two with a liberal arts university-focused diploma.

Art and Design Foundation offers a stimulating hands-on, studio based curriculum in which aspiring artist and designers learn a broad range of art and design disciplines. Traditional skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture are covered as well as a range of digital techniques and computer-based software, all of which contribute to the development of a quality portfolio.

Prepare to get your hands dirty! Loyalist offers real-world learning for real-world problems — featuring extensive fieldwork and instruction with technologies of the future in the newly equipped Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Sample natural environments and analyze environmental contaminants.
• Get hands-on experience in leading-edge environmental facilities, including well-equipped Field Biology and Instrumentation labs.
• Understand the underlying social systems that contribute to pollutants in water, soil and air.
• Learn to apply current legislation under the Environmental Protection Act.
• Applied project learning and field placements in the second and third years provide practical experience, preparing you for a smooth transition to the workforce with a wide range of skills.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques and Technician programs provide students with a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and experiential learning to enable its graduates to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. With multiple pathways to follow and a variety of career options to choose from, Loyalist's HRAC programs are designed to prepare its graduates to operate in an environment dominated by climate change, rising fuel costs, and sustainable choices.

How You’ll Learn
Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.

Get a well-rounded set of mechanical skills that prepare you for a career in maintenance or manufacturing and give you an edge when seeking a competitive apprenticeship.

Experiential learning

• Hands-on shop work includes welding, machining and maintenance procedures.
• Use the latest in laser alignment technology.
• Explore design using AutoCAD and the interpretation of engineering drawings.
• Earn experience diagnosing and troubleshooting.
• Use leading-edge simulation software to design and demonstrate hydraulic circuits and electrical circuits.
• The positive learning environment includes well-lit, roomy labs with brand new lathes and milling machines.
• You could apprentice as an industrial mechanic (millwright), machinist, metal fabricator, welder or electrician among other trades.
• Loyalist’s program uses many of the same curriculum standards as apprenticeship training for industrial mechanics (millwrights).
• Graduates are entitled to write the provincial test for an exemption from Level I of the in-school portion of the Industrial Mechanics apprenticeship.
• Candidates who pass the exam don’t need to leave the workplace to attend school – making them more valuable to employers.
• Graduates may continue into year two of the Manufacturing Engineering Technician program and complete a diploma in one additional year (with bridging courses).
