Spas and salons are increasingly popular destinations for people wanting to reduce stress and feel younger. Train in a full range of spa services to help people look and feel their best. Then, put those skills to work, both in our on-campus, student-run day spa and during two field placements.

Experiential learning
In this hands-on program, students operate The Spa at Loyalist, a busy wellness retreat and retail boutique delivering full esthetic services in a supervised environment:

• Train in a full range of spa services in a safe learning environment, including manicures, pedicures, facials, hair removal, make-up artistry, aromatherapy and hot stone massage.
• Get the highest technical skills in Loyalist’s lab using the latest in skincare technology, including microdermabrasion and facial machinery.
• Work with new state-of-the-art medical spa equipment, including the Sonicator 740, an anti-aging skincare system that applies ultrasound technology, and the IPL Angelite, an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) machine used for photo facials and permanent hair reduction.
• Deliver high-end customer service as you interact with clients.
• Develop important skills in front desk management and the latest point-of-sale software.
• Learn the business side of spa management with instruction in visual display, retail sales, marketing, personal finance, business communications and entrepreneurship.
• Create a business plan including a spa design layout and creative spa menu showcasing a variety of skills learned in the program.
• Earn 180 hours of clinic time in our state-of-the-art, full-service spa.
• Network and showcase your skills to industry, with two field placements.
• Learn from reputed guest-speaker educators.
• Participate in community outreach events to support local women and children.
• Be proficient and fast with skills by practicing skills throughout the two years.

Police officers make our communities a better place. They do this by preventing crime, enforcing laws and improving the quality of life for all. Loyalist's program prepares you to be a great candidate for police services. To help you get started and make connections, Loyalist Police Foundations provides eligible students with experience, observing police officers in action, at their side.

Prepare to excel in the satisfying and fascinating profession of policing. Enter the field confidently with a combination of theory and practical experiences.

• Gain valuable field or field-related experience in two separate placements.
• Practise interpreting and applying the law from class to courtroom.
• Participate in a mock trial in a real courtroom with real judges.
• Role-play different scenarios using uniforms and police training equipment.
• Volunteer with police services in roles which have included emergency response training, front line officer training, mock disaster participation, and community policing activities.
• Learn to put personal safety and respect for victims into practice.
• Discover skills to improve your resiliency to stress.
• Develop essential career skills in ethical decision-making and conflict management.

This program prepares participants to monitor and control radiation exposure and to implement safety measures. Radiation safety technicians and specialists work together with physicists, occupational safety and health specialists and public health officials in various nuclear, health care and natural environments.

How You'll Learn
Prepare for a career in computer, technology and network management in various business environments:

• Learn to develop, operate, maintain and coordinate the use of local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs), mainframe networks, hardware, software and related computer equipment.
• Install, configure and service microcomputer operating systems and network application software, and get an introduction to Linux and Cloud computing.
• Explore web design and learn about installing, managing and maintaining web servers/sites for optimum performance.
• Delve into machine connectivity, virtualization architecture and computer network design to implement cross-platform networks.

Those who dream of working in the sports and entertainment field need specialized business training to turn their passion into a career. In only four months, you will learn to make an impact on the bottom line. Then, demonstrate those skills on the job during a four-month placement.

Every aspect of this intensive eight-month post-grad program is focused on opening doors to employment. Learning features:

• Intensive role-play scenarios.
• Guest speakers representing organizations such as Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (NHL/NBA/MLS), the Ontario Hockey League, Sports Marketing Companies and the American Hockey League, such as the Belleville Senators.
• A field trip to a large North American city to meet with the sales and marketing staff of a major sports and entertainment organization.
• A trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando to take part in two certificate programs from Disney to build your entertainment portfolio in leadership and customer retention strategies.
• Planning and executing events.
• Expanding the brand to build revenue through licensing and content creation.
• Creating transactional sales opportunities for sport.
• Developing win-win activation opportunities for sponsors and partners.
• Creating integrated marketing, media and public relations plans.
• Evaluating marketing initiatives against sales forecasting, budgeting, financial health and return on investment.

This hands-on introduction to residential design includes consideration of the environment, building codes and residential building design practices. It delivers marketable skills in under a year of study and prepares students for further study in the Architectural Technician/Technology program.

Experiential learning
Bring your design ideas to life in this hands-on program:

• Get a practical blend of classroom instruction and hands-on studio experience.
• Design a small building by creatively addressing the use of space, materials, code requirements and the environment.
• Showcase creativity and analytical skills to create a design, and then bring your concepts to life with a 3D models.
• In less than a year, you will develop marketable skills and knowledge in construction drawings, residential building codes, computer drafting (AutoCAD and SketchUp), construction materials and methods, and presenting your designs.

There are career-building opportunities in this skilled trade for people who enjoy working with their hands and take pride in a job well done. Loyalist students practise green and sustainable building methods as they work through a major carpentry or renovation project.

Experiential learning
Learning emphasizes practical hands-on work during a major carpentry, new construction or renovation building project:

• Practise your skills in carpentry and construction including, rough carpentry/framing, finish carpentry, base footings, insulation, vapour and air barriers, drywalling, window and door installation, interior and exterior finishes, fine finishing techniques, and roofing.
• Study building codes, work from blueprints, produce basic sketches, develop building details and create computer-assisted drawings using AutoCAD and SketchUp.
• Receive hands-on instruction in environmentally sound construction techniques, proper tool usage and jobsite safety.
• Second-year students develop advanced techniques in sustainable and alternative building, sustainable construction, green build and healthy homes, i.e., low VOC (volatile organic compounds), electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems.  
• Obtain industry-required certificates such as Working at Heights and First Aid.

Many people are overwhelmed by the justice system and the cost of legal representation. Paralegals help their clients navigate through the process and answer key questions. Licensed paralegals can also represent their clients in court. The Law Society of Ontario accredits this program.

Experiential learning
Students prepare for the full scope of practice of a licensed paralegal in Ontario through a blend of classroom instruction and practical experience that includes:

• Training in substantive law and legal procedures.
• An emphasis on ethical conduct and professional responsibilities.
• Preparing and presenting a case in court before a local judge during a moot trial in the Ontario Court of Justice or the Superior Court of Justice where each student is assigned the role of a legal representative.

Apply your learning on the job during a field placement in your second year. Loyalist students have completed placements with:

Customs compliance and border security have emerged as areas of national focus in public safety and global trade. Train for a career in this dynamic segment of the Canadian economy. Learn with leaders in virtual learning environments – Loyalist’s border simulations have been used by the Canada Border Services Agency to train new recruits.
