If you have a three-year diploma or a degree, this program will prepare you for the exciting career of user experience (UX) designer. UX designers consult with target audiences (users) to collect and interpret data that can be used to make technology, products and services that meet their needs, are functional and pleasurable to use, and meet the strategic objectives of businesses and organizations.

With this graduate certificate you will be prepared to work with clients in a number of different industry sectors to achieve these vital business objectives. The program will help you develop skills in research, facilitation, presentation, business analysis, project management, information architecture, usability assessment as well as visualization. You’ll learn how to implement design-thinking processes and strategies, conduct user research, employ usability and accessibility best practices, and produce UX documentation to help companies and organizations generate innovative products and services that meet the needs of their customers and audiences.

You begin Marketing with a foundational understanding of business and its disciplines and scaffold your marketing abilities over two years to create value for the marketplace and open doors to marketing opportunities.

Second year courses include integrated marketing communications, brand management, business simulations, data analysis, personal selling, marketing research and entrepreneurship. You become career ready and contribute to an organization with a marketing placement. 

With a holistic approach to career readiness you take part in Emotional Intelligence, and Work Place Big 5 self assessments, career fairs, dining etiquette and intense professional development.  You meet regularly with faculty to review customized development plans to pursue relevant personal goals. 

The General Arts & Science (Certificate) program offers a foundational year for students preparing for future study in a wide range of fields. For students in the Social Sciences stream, core courses in communications, computers, and personal development are enhanced by courses in Psychology, Sociology, Interper­sonal Skills, Addictions, Stress Management, and Statistics. Graduates of the Social Sci­ences stream are prepared for future study in Community Services programs such as Social Service Worker, Behavioural Science Technol­ogy, and Child and Youth Care. Students wishing to pursue Behavioural Science Technology may require additional courses and should contact the General Arts & Science program coordinator.

For students moving on to other St. Lawrence College programs after completing this one-year program, some of the courses completed as part of this program may transfer. For more information, please consult the appropriate program coordinator of your targeted program.

Are you passionate about our access to food being a fundamental human right? Are you interested in following your passion with a career in the food industry that encompasses food safety, sustainability in food systems including farming and fishing, food production and processing, distribution, preparation and consumption? If you are, then this is a program that allows you to explore diverse opportunities in an industry that is a vital part of the economy and the community.

This is a unique program that is unlike traditional food and culinary programs. Taught by a multidisciplinary faculty team, it affords the learner the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of all segments of the supply chain from farm to table. Graduates of this program will have opportunities that span the entire food industry from food services businesses to multinational food conglomerates.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
This program offers courses that include hands-on training to permit learners to understand and experience food preparation and can relate to the importance of sanitation, and quality assurance. The program also offers the opportunities to experience research and innovation related to processes for new food products. Case studies are an integral part of the program that will look at unique safety regulations associated with genetic modification or bio-engineering of food.

Learners will use their gained knowledge in food chemistry, food safety and security, the effects of food on population health to plan portion-controlled menus. In order to achieve this the learner applies the principles and regulations associated with food procurement, preparation maintain safety and quality standards.

For over forty years, our acclaimed program has trained highly-skilled, creative individuals for the growing profession of Graphic Design. This three-year advanced diploma program prepares graduates for direct entry into dynamic and rewarding work environments including design studios, ad agencies, interactive web and game design studios, publishing houses, marketing firms, and film & television production studios, to name a few.
 
Our program of study develops the creative potential of each student in three specific ways:

• The creation of a personal portfolio that demonstrates an understanding of design fundamentals using advanced software skills.
• The process and application of design thinking to solve complex communication problems.
• Direct, hands-on experience with professional clients representing a broad range of industries.

We train our students in the foundations of composition and layout, typography, colour, interactive and accessible design principles, and the use of industry-standard software. Our project-based learning approach ensures that students are directly involved in shaping their learning experiences, and that principles and best practices are applied in portfolio-driven work across different media. With dedicated studio, lecture, and computer lab spaces, our students have the opportunity to collaborate on projects as well as develop social networks in a supportive learning environment.

This two-year Ontario College Diploma pro­gram prepares students to work as practical front-line service providers in a variety of social service settings.

The SSW program gives students the opportunity to learn about and to work with many different people including individuals with mental health and addiction problems, seniors who require extra support, children with behaviour problems, women who have been abused, people who live in poverty and / or who are homeless and adolescents who live in group homes.

Our program includes:

• Two field placement opportunities
• Professors with experience in the field
• Relevant courses emphasizing active learn­ing, skill-based learning, hands-on activi­ties, practical assignments
• Eligibility to join the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and to use the title, Registered Social Service Worker.

Highlights
Field Placement Experience: Practical training is provided through field placement opportuni­ties. Field placement choices are made with the students’ professional growth in mind.
 
Some examples are placements with:

• families on social assistance
• seniors and their families
• women who have suffered abuse
• new immigrants
• adults with addiction problems
• consumers of mental health services
• unemployed adults
• children in schools or group homes

The General Arts & Science Diploma provides a broad liberal arts curriculum designed with the advice of our community partners, to prepare students for the workforce, other college programs, or transfer to university. Paired with hands-on instruction, and exciting new experiential learning opportunities, General Arts and Science Diploma graduates leave us prepared for their next steps out into the world.

Core courses provide a solid foundation in communications, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, numeracy, inclusivity, science, and general education. Complementing these are varied electives such as Film, Addictions, Fitness, Psychology, and dozens more. Our students scaffold their studies by earning at least three Advanced Level Learning credits, in both applied and social sciences, math, and/or communications before graduating.

In the third and fourth semesters, GAS Diploma students will learn to research various local issues, and apply the skills and knowledge gained in the program to offer creative solutions to one specific problem in a community.

• General Arts & Science is a flexible program. Course sequence can change subject to student goals and class availability.
• Diploma graduates are prepared to enter the workforce directly, or they may continue their studies in advanced level programs at the college.
• Students who self-identify as Pre-University work with the Program Coordinator to further customize their diploma course selection in preparation for university study. Key academic areas (Communications, Applied Science, Social Science, Math) are emphasized in accordance with the student's goals. Potential transfer opportunities exist at a number of Canadian universities; exploring these possibilities is at the discretion of the student. This program will provide you with the opportunity to excel in the vibrant, rewarding and highly mobile tourism industry. The skills you acquire in this program reflect employer needs and will help ensure that you are ready for the work environment. Art and cultural tourism, hospitality and tourism law, sport tourism, special events planning and management, eco and adventure tourism, and historical tourism are but a few of the many subject areas that you will explore.

A student graduating from the Office Administration - General program will graduate with a one-year certificate, opening the door to a variety of entry-level employment opportunities in both private and public work sectors.

Students will gain knowledge in the following areas:

• Technical skills
  • Introductory level Office 365/2019 cloud-based computer application skills including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint etc.
  • Outlook 365 - students become proficient in producing professional email communications, creating folders to stay organized, use of Outlook calendar to book appointments and schedule meetings.
  • Students will be required to achieve a keyboarding speed of 40-50 GWPM.
  • Students learn to share and edit documents in a cloud-based environment. Using MS Teams, collaboration software students learn how to book, attend and chair virtual meetings.
• Soft skills
  • Customer relationships are built on the use of effective and consistent communication as well as the ability to uphold and maintain confidentiality. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively are skills that are highly valued.
  • Employers seek office administrators that are highly organized, forward-thinking and have the ability to problem-solve.

• The Office Administration - General Program prepares graduates for current and future office trends. Experienced faculty prepare students to work in dynamic business environments. Students become extremely computer literate through instructional scaffolding. Faculty provide a supportive and professional environment that allows students to build on their current level of knowledge, which leads to mastery of the skills required in a business office.
• Students graduate from the program appreciating the value of being an office administrator and become advocates of the profession during their career.

The Hairstyling diploma program offers practical, theoretical, and experiential learning opportunities to prepare students for an exciting career in the Hairstyling industry. Our students gain knowledge and skills in all areas of hairstyling, including haircutting, styling, chemical services, hair additions as well as career preparation and business operations.

Our faculty and staff are a group of highly trained, skilled professionals with years of experience in both the Hairstyling and educational fields, and many of our faculty are graduates of our program. Our faculty team is continually updating their skills to offer our students the most current hairstyling techniques and trends to prepare them for this ever-changing industry.

Program Highlights

• Our diploma program meets the 1,500 vocational training hours required by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. Our graduates are then eligible to complete an Apprenticeship (without completing any exemption testing), after which time graduates are eligible to write the Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) exam to become a licensed Hairstylist in Ontario.
• Our students gain experiential learning in our fully operational training salons: Transition Training Salon (Brockville) and Dynamic Designs (Kingston).
• Our students are trained with professional brand hair care, styling, and chemical products: Redken, Matrix, Pulp Riot, AG Hair, Goldwell; and in administrative operations using Milano Spa Software.
• Our students learn from and network with industry professionals through guest speaker opportunities and applied learning experiences throughout the program.
• Our students experience three community salon placement opportunities, where they continue to gain the foundational skills needed for success in the industry. The majority of students are hired directly from the placement component into apprentice/sponsorship employment contracts.
• Our diploma students gain all foundational, advanced technical, and communication skills that are an integral asset to be successful in this career.
