Obtain extensive exposure to the cutting edge of modern biology focusing on biology at the smallest scale. Build a strong foundation in all aspects of biology before specializing in biochemical techniques, regulation of gene expression, biotechnology, and microbiology. Study the chemical processes taking place in the environment as a result of human activities including urban air and water pollution, depletion of ozone layer, production of toxic substances from chemical wastes, prevalence of pesticides, and climate change. Learn the fundamentals to accurately assess human activities in the environment.

History can be directly applied to career such as history and social studies teachers, college and university professors, researchers, museum curators and archivists. It can also prepare students for careers in law, journalism, library work, publishing, government, business, and politics.

Psychology is the scientific study of thoughts, feelings, actions, perceptions, physiological and neurological responses, and other behaviours in animals and humans. As both a scientific discipline and a profession, psychology relates to virtually every aspect of people's lives. Through research, psychology plays an integral role in understanding and predicting human behaviour. Through clinical practice, psychology strives to help people live more productive and fulfilling lives.

The Department of Psychology offers a variety of courses and the option of obtaining a (Major, Minor or Honours) in psychology as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree.

To better understand the fascinating field of psychology, first year students participate in research studies conducted by upper-year students and faculty. Upper year students have the opportunitiy to conduct research in the Honours program, by taking Directed studies courses or getting involved in faculty reserach, as research assistants and volunteers. Our students enjoy intimate classroom settings with dedicated, knowledgable, caring professors who have an exciting range of research interest. 

Acquire a foundation in tourism studies including tourism experience marketing, environmental issues, community and cultural issues, applied research methods, and product development and innovation. Explore tourism experience management topics such as understanding and influencing tourist behaviour, business strategy, small business management, information technology, and managing service operations in a global setting. Gain valuable field experience with a two-semester consulting assignment in tourism-related organization.

Associate diplomas recognize the achievements of students who have completed two years of academic work. They are of particular value to students who want to save money by completing the lower level requirements of a business degree in their local community before transferring to another university such as Simon Fraser University or University of British Columbia for third and fourth year. Associate diplomas are also intended to recognize the accomplishments of student who for financial, family, work or academic reasons are not able to complete a full four-year business degree.

The Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma is awarded to students who have completed the lower level requirements of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Students may substitute General Education Electives for MATH 1170 – Calculus for Business and Economics and ECON 2330 – Economics and Business Statistics 2.

Graduates of the Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma may return to TRU in the future to complete the Bachelor of Business Administration and receive full credit for courses taken in the associate diploma.

Students in the Visual Arts at Thompson Rivers University can have the best of two worlds: courses can be counted toward a Diploma and toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in Visual Arts, or other university degrees at the same time. The Diploma allows students to sample a diverse selection of different media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and multi-media to gain an introduction to contemporary art practices along with art history and theory. The Diploma is useful in a resume for job applications or entrance to academic programs that require some background theory and practice in visual arts.

Our flexible, accessible graduate program offers a variety pathways to admission. You can choose core course options in Leadership and Managing Change in Health Care and Indigenous Health Leadership. Criminology prepares students for careers in policing, justice, victimology and law enforcement. Criminology is both a subject of academic study and a field of practice. Graduates of a Criminology degree will have extensive knowledge of the key social and psychological factors that lead to, and can prevent criminological and deviant behaviour. Criminology students develop many skills including:

Substantive skills

• Criminologists develop the ability to understand criminal and deviant behaviour at work in society so that they can better evaluate proposed changes or resistances to change.

• Criminology provides the ability to identify the contributing parts of a problem and to evaluate proposals for change.

• Criminology students learn to synthesize existing theoretical knowledge, and research information, and the processes of evaluating arguments and solutions.

• Criminology students learn how data are collected and analyzed, how data are used to test hypotheses, and how to evaluate the work presented in research studies and the popular media.

• Criminology courses provide practice in effective communication in written and oral forms. Students are encouraged to develop their ability to explain and interpret as well as to clarify and summarize.
