Archaeology is the study of human civilizations and societies, primarily through the study of the materials they left behind.

Archaeology at UNB Fredericton is an interdepartmental program provided by the Departments of Anthropology and Classics and Ancient History in the Faculty of Arts. A Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology covers anthropological archaeology (human-focused archaeology) and classical archaeology (investigation of the Ancient Greece and Rome).

The first two years of the program consist of required courses which provide a foundation in the discipline of Archaeology. In the final two years students specialize in the Anthropological or Classical streams, but are required to take some upper-level classes from both streams.

An important part of the program is the archaeological field work requirement. This requirement may also be satisfied by completing a field school program offered through Anthropology or Classics and Ancient History, or through field schools offered by research institutions or universities around the globe.

Opportunities also exist for work placements with government-sponsored or private-sector cultural resource management-based archaeological projects. These also satisfy the requirement for field work and allow students to gain employment experience and earn a wage.

Two Options

Mathematics:The mathematics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry, government or education. Mathematics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of application such as the physical sciences, computer science, engineering or business.

Statistics: The statistics major degree is designed to prepare you with a career in industry or government as well as to provide a background for graduate study. Statistics students are urged to obtain some expertise in an area of applications such as the physical sciences, forestry, or computer science.

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment which takes place in the private, municipal and federal sectors.

Civil engineers work on solving many of the largest problems facing the world today. They plan, design and build infrastructure essential to a modern society. Geological Engineers explore, protect, and responsibly develop the Earth’s water, mineral, and energy resources. They also ensure that engineering structures are designed for long-term stability and safety, taking geological conditions and hazards into account.

Why Geological Engineering at UNB?
UNB offers the only geological engineering program in Atlantic Canada. As a joint initiative from the Department of Earth Sciences and the Department of Civil Engineering, your degree will focus on one of the three specialized learning streams: geoenvironmental, geotechnical, and mineral resources. Small class sizes provide excellent access to mentorship and opportunities to participate in groundbreaking research. Additionally, the program takes advantage of New Brunswick’s incredible geological diversity to offer students hands-on training.

Hands-on learning
Students complete three field schools as part of their degree. They may also participate in two subsidized field trips to international destinations of outstanding geological significance. Students complete a design course in each year of their degree, culminating with a full-year team design project. Students may also enroll in the Engineering Co-op Program as part of their degree.

Everything around us leaves an impression. In this way, spatial information exists in all aspects of human activity. In Geodesy and Geomatics, you’ll analyze data about the Earth’s surface to solve complex problems. This  specialized field of study is useful in many circumstances, including: fighting climate change, creating tsunami warning systems, urban planning, constructing pipelines, operating navigation systems, understanding public health, recreating crime scenes, and numerous other examples. 

The Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program is available as a major or minor as part of a four-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree. The Faculty has been preparing graduates for success in their engineering careers since 1854, when UNB was the first university in Canada to introduce an engineering program. 

Why Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering at UNB?
UNB is one of only two certified Geomatics programs in the country. Our world-class education and research on the subject has resulted in a 100% employment rate for our students.

Our graduates have gone on to help design and build bridges, make cleaner fuels and next-generation wireless communications tools. Researchers in the Faculty are developing technologies to help improve satellite imagery used by Google Earth and the Canadian Department of National Defence. Others are helping develop biofuels and renewable energy.
