Food systems is the study of the food supply chain, which includes production, processing, distribution, and consumption as well as waste. Drivers of the food system include culture, economics, policy, and marketing, and the collective impact on outcomes including human and environmental health, food insecurity, and community food security. The Nutrition and Food Systems degree is an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of the food system from production to consumption and impact on human health, as well as challenges faced by the food system to develop sustainable solutions for producing, processing, delivering, and consuming safe, culturally desirable, nutritious, and economically and environmentally sustainable food. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is committed to training emerging leaders who will address grand challenges facing humanity, including management and preservation of precious and finite natural resources, and finding solutions to feed over 9 billion people by 2050.

Learning Outcomes

• Effectively communicate diet and nutrition information/knowledge to diverse populations
• Apply scientific evidence, best practices, and professional judgment when evaluating food- and nutrition-related problems
• Identify alterations in nutrition metabolism and its implications on health and disease
• Utilize food science and culinary principles in food preparation to recognize how knowledge of food can influence nutritional status.

The safety, sustainability and efficiency of structures depend on architectural engineers who are passionate about every detail of construction. Architectural engineers design systems that complete the built environment. They ensure the structural integrity and resilience of buildings and the comfort and health of those who occupy them. Students in the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering program develop a solid foundation in areas such as structural health monitoring and analysis, materials processing, and water and energy efficiency. Undergraduates gain real-world experience through specialized projects, architectural studio courses and paid internships. Students are prepared to work at engineering, architecture and construction firms or to pursue advanced degrees.

Examine the social dimensions of health and health care in directly applicable ways, making for an impactful career within a helping profession. The Care, Health and Society major equips students who plan to pursue careers in medical professions and offers a broader perspective of how health care integrates within the context of social interaction, social institutions and social structures. This interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science incorporates coursework from the social sciences, science and humanities, and offers a fully online option. The program complements training in public health and front-line health care careers, providing students with the toolkit necessary to address persistent population health issues, inform public health initiatives and combat barriers to health care delivery. Students obtain analytical, organizational and advocacy skills for the helping professions.

After auditioning for placement, undergraduate instrumentalists progress from the wind symphony and philharmonic to the wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, and chamber winds. In addition to participating in large conducted ensembles, Performance majors take core classes in music literature, music history, pedagogy, orchestration, conducting, piano and applied lessons. Students pursuing an emphasis in Sustainable Buildings within the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program explore the science and practice the techniques behind building energy efficiency. Hands-on coursework includes such topics as climate-responsive design, net-zero energy design, energy conservation, passive solar design and natural ventilation systems. In this interdisciplinary program, students learn how to analyze existing and planned structures and use critical-thinking skills and solutions-based strategies to create workable plans to make those buildings more efficient. Students graduate with a practical understanding of sustainability principles and expertise in built environment policy and design.

Join the new green economy with an in-depth look at sustainable land development and real estate finance. Teaching students how to conceptualize and manage sustainable and responsible real estate development is a critical objective of the Sustainable Real Estate Development Emphasis of the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments program. Coursework focuses on sustainable practices, urban design, real estate finance, site development and construction. Students learn practical business skills such as accounting, marketing and economics. The faculty are leaders in the real estate development field and their interdisciplinary approach to this program features collaborative learning environments that build skills in innovative thought, creativity, problem-solving and teamwork.
