Food systems is the study of the food supply chain, which includes production, processing, distribution, and consumption as well as waste. Drivers of the food system include culture, economics, policy, and marketing, and the collective impact on outcomes including human and environmental health, food insecurity, and community food security. The Nutrition and Food Systems degree is an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the complexities of the food system from production to consumption and impact on human health, as well as challenges faced by the food system to develop sustainable solutions for producing, processing, delivering, and consuming safe, culturally desirable, nutritious, and economically and environmentally sustainable food. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is committed to training emerging leaders who will address grand challenges facing humanity, including management and preservation of precious and finite natural resources, and finding solutions to feed over 9 billion people by 2050.

If proficiency in both Spanish and Portuguese is important to you, consider the Spanish and Portuguese emphasis under the Spanish major. Students seeking their Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Spanish and Portuguese emphasis take language, literature, linguistics and culture courses in both languages. The major consists of 18 credits in each language, and placement exams help determine a student's starting level. The University of Arizona is home to one of the largest Portuguese language programs in the nation, and various clubs offer students the opportunity to practice conversing in either Spanish or Portuguese outside of the classroom. In addition to several study abroad programs for Spanish-speaking students, the university offers a six-week program in Fortaleza, Brazil, for those wanting to immerse themselves in Portuguese.

Corporations, organizations, governments and communities need public health leaders to focus on planning, management and administration. The Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Plant Systems has four tracks; students in the Fresh Produce Safety track advance the latest methods for maintaining the safety of food one of the most important resources on Earth. In this Yuma-based program, students discover how production chains become contaminated with diseases, and learn Good Agricultural Practices for the harvest of leafy greens and fresh-vegetable food safety. Coursework provides insight into food safety issues, field risk assessments, facility sanitation and inspection processes. Students gain real-life experience in the applications of soil, water and plant sciences, including soil chemistry, plant nutrition and hydroponics.
