The redesigned 127-credit 4-year Bachelor of Science Degree in the Health Education and Physical Education program will provide you with greater career flexibility and will lead to New York State Initial Teaching Certification in two distinct disciplines.

Students in the program learn effective techniques of classroom management, curriculum design, and lesson planning for children in Kindergarten through Grade 12.  Liberal arts courses in biology equip you with knowledge in human anatomy and physiology.

The Health Education component examines nutrition, health care services, sexuality and family planning, personal well-being, and drugs in contemporary society. This major prepares students for careers as varied as documentary producers, television writers, web video producers, news anchors, writers, radio broadcasters, and interview hosts. Courses cover the technical and creative aspects of this field, including new technologies, digital audio and video production and editing as well as narrative development and cultural dimensions of media. Students will work behind the scenes, writing scripts for broadcasts and operating television and radio equipment, and also practice on-air skills through work at LIU Post’s TV station, PTV, and radio station, WCWP. Students develop an understanding of a variety of storytelling styles and formats in both radio and television.

The 120-credit Bachelor of Arts in Psychology is a popular and versatile undergraduate degree. It can be applied to almost any area of work, including social services, law, human resources, business and government. Courses in this program explore how people learn, what lies behind people’s behavior, how the brain affects behavior, how gender affects development and the different ways in which people interact. The writing concentration explores various forms of creative expression through course work in literature, creative writing and non-fiction writing. Students pursuing this concentration have the opportunity to take courses in “Academic Writing” (expository, argumentative, creative writing), “Performance Writing” (screenplays, teleplays), “Writing for the Marketplace” (business, public relations), and “Rhetorical Theory” (ancient and modern).

Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health. They are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief. They also help with job and career concerns, educational decisions, mental and emotional health issues, and relationship problems. In addition, they may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities. Some specialize in delivering mental health services for the elderly. Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors. Mental health counselors work in community health and social service organizations, day treatment programs, outpatient mental health clinics, hospitals, or private practice.

The 60-credit M.S. in Mental Health Counseling provides students with core knowledge to be effective helpers in a variety of clinical settings. The program covers professional issues and ethics, counseling theories, human development, counseling skills, group work, assessment and career development. The College of Management (COM) at LIU Post offers a new, 30-credit, specialized Master of Science in Data Analytics and Strategic Business Intelligence program (MDA) with a blend of data science, IT, and business courses to prepare students for the demand in industries for data-literate managers and data scientists with solid business knowledge and analytical skills.

The MDA program is designed for recent graduates or working professionals in their early or mid-career phases.  The ideal student should have basic quantitative and IT knowledge and skills through prior coursework or working experience, and be highly motivated to learn how to deal with data as a strategic asset and apply IT and analytic methods to make data-driven business decisions.

To prepare the workforce of the future, the 30- credit M.S. in Artificial Intelligence (AI) aims to educate and train skilled leaders to create AI applications and AI systems that are designed to solve complex real-world challenges and problems across many industry domains. The purpose of the program is to achieve this latter goal while addressing the emerging needs of the market. Additionally, the new program, with its faculty and students, aims to accelerate multidisciplinary research and discovery in LIU emerging signature areas: health, pharmaceutics, pharmacological engineering, bioinformatics, and business among others.
