Before September 11, 2001, the job market for emergency management was already expanding quickly. The movement of populations into the "Sunshine States" and into risk-prone areas such as coastlines, floodplains, and forests made natural events such as hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes far more threatening and challenging to communities and businesses. After September 11, terrorism in all forms — including biological and chemical — became a crucial and inextricable part of emergency management.

A unique experience

Only the second such program in New England, the M.S. in Emergency Management program offers 36 credits of interdisciplinary coursework — delivered both online and on campus — that prepares students for successful roles in disaster mitigation and prevention. Students in the program complete eight required core courses covering topics in hazard mitigation, catastrophe readiness, disaster recovery, emergency incident management, and more. An additional four courses of electives are required for the degree, with the approval of the program advisor students may select courses from areas of study such as criminal justice, fire science, public administration, national security, or another area.

Human uses of the marine environment, including fishing, aquaculture, energy development, and tourism, have increased significantly in the past two decades. Coastal areas are highly productive and resource-rich ecosystems and also account for some of the most sought-after real estate in the world. Multiple uses, potentially conflicting interests, and economic and social dependency create ever more complex issues of sustainability, environmental law and policy, and resource management.

With our M.A. in Marine Policy and Management, you will gain the higher-level skills, practical experience, and interdisciplinary knowledge that enable you to thrive in this environment and in the related fields that feed into it.

Fathom the Depths of Human-Marine Dynamics

Through the University of New Haven’s Master of Arts in Marine Policy and Management program, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the complex forces at play in marine-linked human and natural systems. The competencies that you gain in the program — developing and implementing policy and management plans, strategizing for effective public outreach and communication, and highly refined research skills — will make you a vital part of the decision making process on issues of marine natural resource management, policy, and sustainability.

Through this interdisciplinary major, you’ll take courses in political science, economics, national security, legal studies, and history, studying conflict, development, and diplomacy. You will examine the resolutions of international conflicts, the role of inequality as a cause of conflict – and a critical component of its resolution – and explore post-conflict peace-making. You’ll do all this while learning from professors who have extensive international experience.

As an International Affairs major, you will also:

• Explore post-conflict reconstruction, foreign policy, and the international political economy

An additional feature of the program caters to those wishing to switch fields into the computer science realm. We have prepared a set of six bridge courses to help you transition from your previous background to a level of readiness that enables you to successfully pursue the rest of the degree program. Marketing exists all throughout the world around us, and has many roles in business. Behind the every great concept or product is a creative mind helping to market it and promote to the masses. As a marketing major at the University of New Haven you’ll complement a strong foundation in the principles of business by specializing in how e-commerce and marketing technologies such as social media, database marketing, Google AdWords, and data mining have impacted – and forever changed – the traditional study and practice of marketing

Students earning a B.S. degree in marketing are required to complete 121 credits, including the university core curriculum (40 credits) and the business program core (30 credits).    Further clarification and additional requirements are outlined below:

The Hotel and Resort Management Concentration focuses on training students to fulfill management-level careers in hotel and resort industries. After gaining functional business competencies, students specialize in areas that are critical to success in a range of leadership and managerial positions within hotels, restaurants, spas, resorts, clubs, and theme parks. Students in this concentration are exposed to several experiential learning and industry collaboration opportunities.

Students earning a B.S. degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management with a concentration in Hotel and Resort Management are required to complete 121 credits, including the University core curriculum (41 credits), Hospitality and Tourism Management major requirements (36 credits), Hotel and Resort Management concentration (12 credits), Writing Across the Curriculum elective (3 credits), fieldwork (2 credits), service requirement (1 credit), internship (3 credits) and free electives (23 credits).

The Event and Tourism Management Concentration provides students with skills and experiences focused specifically on the event and tourism industries. Students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experience relevant for managing the sustainable tourism experience for the benefit of the traveler, host, and supporting industries. Complex aspects of event, convention, and meeting management are highlighted. Students will also be exposed to the competencies essential to functioning within the industry in an international context.

Correctional Rehabilitation and Supervision

Crime Analysis

Focuses on the application of advanced computer and geographical information systems (GIS) in the collection and analysis of crime data.

Crime Victim Services

Prepares graduates for entry into a wide variety of positions in law enforcement, criminal justice, the courts, corrections, and victim services programs as well as professional settings involving work with victims of crime, their families, and the community at large.

Investigative Services

An interdisciplinary program geared toward enhancing the scientific knowledge of those students seeking investigative positions in various enforcement agencies, the curriculum emphasizes law enforcement, evidence, and forensic science.

Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention

Prepares service providers with knowledge of law and of social and behavioral sciences, as well as communication skills with children, adolescents, and people of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Police Science

The curriculum focuses on the roles, activities, and behaviors of people with regard to maintaining law and order, providing needed services, protecting life and property, and planning and research.
