The Bachelor of Arts in physics degree is designed for students who wish to couple a solid foundation in physics to a non-technical and creative arts field, such as writing, philosophy, political science, or other College of Liberal Arts majors. Likewise, students can obtain technical background in physics along with obtaining a background in business for those interested in business development opportunities.

The Department of Physics offers programs leading either to a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. Students in secondary education may earn the Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and enter the Professional Year Experience program of the College of Education and Human Services for licensure in physics.

The Bachelor of Science curriculum offers a broad, integrated, and in-depth approach to the life sciences. Departmental requirements consist of a balanced core of courses selected from several subject areas, combined with elective courses from the Department of Biological Sciences and other life science departments such as Neuroscience, Cell Biology and Physiology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This degree program can accommodate students with such differing interests and objectives as graduate work in molecular biology, laboratory work in microbiology, or field work in ecology. The B.S. degree also can serve as preprofessional preparation for programs such as medical, dental, or veterinary sciences, or for education licensure.

Biological Sciences Program Learning Objectives

• Students completing a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences will be able to:

The Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies (BTAS) is a completion degree offered through the Lake Campus of Wright State University. It is intended for students who have already completed a two-year degree program or equivalent from an accredited community college, regional campus or technical college, and who wish to pursue a baccalaureate degree. The program(s) of study provides students with knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for advancement in their chosen careers, and integrates technical skills developed within applied associate degree programs with professional skills intrinsic in a bachelor’s degree program.

You will grasp basic principles of the structure, design, and language of music in its historical and cultural contexts while studying music history and literature at Wright State. You can better understand the music you hear, perform, and create. This major is not a terminal degree, and you should expect to continue at the graduate level. Mechanical engineers focus on the analysis, design, automation, fabrication, testing, evaluation, and optimization of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers are designers and problem solvers who are involved, in some way, with practically everything around us.

Historically, mechanical engineering (ME) includes two branches of study. The first deals with heat, fluids, and energy, such as combustion in a rocket engine, the wind and water flow past a racing yacht, or the design of a solar panel for a space station. The second area concerns force and motion in mechanical systems such as determining robot trajectories, analyzing automotive vibration and noise, and computing stress levels in the wings of a new aircraft.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in music is designed for students who want to study music but do not necessarily plan a professional career in music. Students will get a much broader, more general education than students seeking a Bachelor of Music degree. Required courses are kept to a minimum. Consequently, students must work closely with an advisor in selecting course electives. For graduation, students must complete level III in the applied music concentration.

The Bachelor of Science curriculum in Chemistry approaches students' educational endeavors with a broad, integrated, and in-depth view. Departmental requirements, combined with university core requirements and electives, offer a balanced course load for students. This provides undergraduates with the opportunity to explore where their interests in the science field will lead them. This option combines all the required courses for admission to a professional school, which includes two years of chemistry, one year of physics, one year of mathematics, while utilizing recommended courses as science electives to fulfill the bachelor's requirements. Our Founding Fathers looked to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome to draft the documents by which we Americans live. Ninety percent of English words over two syllables come from Latin. The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience was developed by an interdisciplinary team of Wright State University faculty, and emphasizes how physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, and mathematics are integrated to become the field of neuroscience. Courses are designed so that the majority of the time, students are doing rather than listening. The program’s coursework focuses on the cell biology and physiology of neurons and neuronal circuits. It includes training in research techniques, and opportunities to assist faculty with their research. Students will be competitively prepared for health-related preprofessional programs, scientific research, and other career paths.

The Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience program is focused on in-depth neuroscience content knowledge centered around four main learning goals:

    Organization – There is an expansive, yet repetitive, organization to the nervous system, that matches structure with function.
    Cellular Neurophysiology – Neurons are cells with dynamic and excitable membranes. Specialized receptors and channels underlie all chemical and electrical signals in the nervous system.
    Information Processing – The effectiveness of communication between neurons is highly modifiable and is critical for regulating the flow of information within neural networks. Information is also encoded in the timing of signals.
    Neural Networks and Behavior – The average adult brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons with 100 trillion connections, that make a multitude of connections with each other in an organized fashion. This connectivity serves as the link between structure and function, dictating our behavioral responses to various innocuous and traumatic stimuli.
