Personal Support Worker is a two level program leading to an Ontario College Certificate.  Graduates, as entry-level unregulated workers, have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide personal care and home management services to clients in both community and institutional settings.

Personal Support Workers work with clients who are stable and who have clearly identified needs that are not expected to change significantly. They work under the supervision of care/service teams (which include nurses and other regulated or non-regulated care providers) as well as under the direction of the client.

Learning Outcomes:
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

• Work within the personal support worker role in community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and/or hospital care settings* in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer's job description, policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Act responsibly and be accountable for own actions while recognizing the boundaries of knowledge and skills within the personal support worker role that require collaboration with the clients, families, supervisors and/or other members of the interprofessional care/service team*.
• Participate as a member of the interprofessional care/service team* and maintain collaborative working relationships in the provision of supportive care* in community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and/or hospital care settings*.
• Provide client-centred* and client-directed* care that is based on ethical* principles, sensitive to diverse client and family values, beliefs and needs, and which follows the direction of the plan of care/service plan*.
• Establish and maintain helping relationships* with clients and their families reflecting open communication, professional* boundaries, employer's policies and adhering to confidentiality and privacy legislation.
• Identify relevant client information using basic assessment and communication skills and report and document findings in accordance with the requirements of employer policies and procedures and all applicable legislation.
• Promote and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for clients, their families, self and others including the implementation of infection prevention and control measures and emergency first aid procedures that are in keeping with the plan of care/service plan*, employer policies and procedures, and all applicable legislation.
• Assist clients across the lifespan with routine activities of daily living* by applying basic knowledge of growth and development, common alterations in functioning, disease prevention, health promotion and maintenance, rehabilitation and restorative care*.
• Assist clients with medication* in keeping with the direction of the plan of care/service plan* and under the direction and monitoring of a regulated health professional* or most accountable person* and in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer's policies.
• Assist with household management tasks* and instrumental activities of daily living* in accordance with the plan of care/service plan* and considering the preferences, comfort and safety of clients, families and significant others.
• Assist clients who are caring for dependent individuals* considering client and family choices, professional* boundaries and the direction of the plan of care/service plan*.
• Identify and report situations of neglect, and potential, alleged or witnessed/actual incidents of abuse, and respond in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer's policies and procedures.
• Assist in the provision of culturally relevant* palliative and end-oflife care* to clients experiencing life threatening illness and to their families and significant others, from diagnosis through death and bereavement, and in accordance with clients' choices and the plan of care/service plan*.
• Use identified approaches and best practices to support positive and safe behaviour in clients experiencing cognitive impairment, mental health challenges and/or responsive behaviours*.

This three-year co-operative program provides training in both the municipal and structural areas. The design of steel frame and reinforced concrete buildings is studied in the structural courses. Training is provided in materials testing and computer-aided drafting. Municipal topics include the design and construction of water distribution systems, storm, and sanitary sewerage networks, storm water management and highways. Theories for the treatment of water, sewage, and solid wastes are analyzed. Survey courses provide training in the use of high-tech survey equipment and techniques of plane surveying, as related to the Civil Engineering profession. Applied research activities by Professors expose students to real life engineering practices, challenges and solutions.

General Arts and Science is an open-enrollment, preparatory-studies program designed to provide opportunities for students to experience post-secondary studies in a supportive environment. Program participants are afforded the chance to develop a wide range of essential employability skills, benefit from extensive foundational Social Science and Humanities studies, upgrade their academic record, and focus on core and elective courses specific to their areas of interest. Students will also focus on professional writing and elective courses on culture, worldview, history, media and art.

Graduates of the One-Year Certificate program will be prepared to continue vocational studies at the college-level in a number of college programs. Students can also use the One-Year Certificate to apply to select Ontario universities.

In this one-year graduate certificate program, students will study analytical chemistry lab techniques, cannabis crop science, and microbiology in order to apply their scientific knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the emerging cannabis industry. The program prepares students to analyze cannabis for quality, safety, and stability, and contribute to research and development, including the development of new cannabis products. In addition to scientific techniques, students will study the regulatory context of the cannabis industry, and develop their scientific communication and project management skills.

• Collect, analyze and summarize data on cannabis cultivation to optimize yield and quality in a variety of production models;
• Perform all tasks in compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and security measures for legal cannabis production and processing;
• Evaluate current research to apply best practices for sustainability and innovation in the cannabis industry;
• Use laboratory procedures to conduct quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of cannabis products to test product quality, safety and stability;
• Write, follow, validate and optimize standard operating procedures to extract and analyze cannabis products;
• Apply business principles to manage resources effectively in a cannabis lab;
• Evaluate product safety using quality assurance programs and processes;
• Design, plan, and manage projects to meet industry demands;
• Communicate scientific data from lab procedures and scientific literature effectively to licensed producers and stakeholders.

This exciting one-year Ontario College Certificate program allows you to delve into various areas of technology and will help you prepare for and decide on your next step. You'll study with a hands-on approach, exploring a variety of technology subjects such as AutoCAD, practical electronics, welding, machining, computer applications, health and safety, physics and transportation. In addition, you'll discover pathways to programs in the Faculty of Technology, including Building Technology, Applied Science and Technology and Transportation Technology.

Project Management is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program, completed in two four-month levels (laptop required). Students will gain the in-depth knowledge, competencies, skills, tools, and techniques required to plan and execute major projects that achieve organizational goals on time and on budget. The Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge is an integral part of the program curriculum. The curriculum also addresses emerging trends in project management through courses in Agile Project Management, Project Recovery and Project Leadership. Upon completion of the first level of the program, students will be eligible for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification, an entry-level designation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Graduates will be prepared to pursue PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) designation after completing the prescribed period of professional project management experience.

Fanshawe College's Law Clerk program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in legal principles combined with the practical law clerk training that students will need to enter the diverse, fast-paced, modern field of law. As a graduate of the Law Clerk program you will work as part of a team in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, legal technology providers, title insurance companies, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments or in any other capacity where a legal environment exists. Depending upon your choice of career path, you could find yourself preparing motion records and trial documentation, interviewing witnesses, arranging trial dates and adjournments, drafting corporate/commercial documentation, completing Family Law Act financial statements, administering estates, negotiating leases, administering contracts, completing legal research, searching titles or processing real estate transactions. At Fanshawe College you will learn about many areas of Canadian law including civil litigation, corporate/commercial, debtor and creditor rights, real estate, landlord and tenant, estate administration, family law and contracts. You will refine your communication and information processing skills as you learn how to research, analyze and write in the legal environment. You will develop an ability to work with a variety of leading-edge legal software applications and online commercial legal databases and services.

The Human Services Foundation program provides a broad education in understanding human behaviour and serves as a foundation for preparing the student to enter specific people helping career programs. Basic academic coursework relevant to human services and volunteer experience in a human services setting combine to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of helping.

• Apply the appropriate Client service strategies according to client behaviour/preference.
• Select the Community Services and Child Studies field best suited to personal and career interest.
• Explain how academic strengths, needs and personal health factors affect success and wellness in a college environment.
• Utilize written and verbal communication skills specific to the Community Services and Child Studies field.

Students develop a wide variety of skills related to developing, testing and deploying applications for mobile devices. The main focus of the program is to design mobile applications for the two leading platforms in mobile devices: iOS and Android. Students will develop the capabilities to assess the integration of mobile solutions in existing business functions and processes, build native applications for mobile devices, implement web and enterprise solutions on the mobile platform, and implement user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design best practices. In their final semester, students will complete a co-operative work placement with an industry partner.

Co-operative Education

The two term Construction Project Management program will focus on the knowledge and skills required to advance in the construction industry to a management position, acknowledging the new demands of this role that include the theory and practice of managing a residential, industrial, commercial and institutional (I.C.I.) construction project from start to finish, while working inter-professionally and coordinating the work with a variety of other trades/professions. This program is also designed to meet the need for people with out-of-Canada qualifications such as architects and engineers to use their skills and qualify for these well paid, rewarding jobs.

• Assess requirements for construction industry business planning and management.
• Formulate strategies for human resource planning and management.
• Integrate and apply knowledge of construction legislation, standards, procedures and contract law into an on-going planning and decision making process.
• Justify safe work practices including risk analysis and risk management theory, assisting in the formulation of options on the basis of specific project/operational requirements.
• Utilize collaborative leadership skills to communicate and influence project stakeholders to achieve project goals.
• Manage and execute a variety of construction projects using project management principles, practices and tools.
