This graduate certificate program is designed to prepare students to teach English as a Second (or Foreign) Language in Canada and/or overseas.  The program covers topics integrating theoretical, pedagogical, and practical applications for teaching English as a second or foreign language, meeting educational standards set by TESL Ontario.  Additionally, this program includes courses to enhance professional and intercultural communication skills, knowledge, and experience.

This program provides students with an understanding of the practical science of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. It is a three-year, seven level program with up to 16 months of paid co-op experience. The electrical engineering technology program will prepare graduates for jobs in growth areas of automation, network communications, electrical utilities/protection, process control, electronics, and embedded systems. Students will study electrical system design, automation, power generation/distribution, and develop practical skills. Graduates will be skilled in AutoCAD, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, PLCs, motors, electronics, programming, and industrial automation. Throughout the program, students will apply this knowledge in conjunction with the Canadian Electrical Code, workplace health and safety and project management applications. Additionally, students will enhance their interpersonal and communication skills.

This program emphasizes the dynamic role of the Doula within communities to prepare graduates for a rewarding career collaborating with health care teams to honour and advocate for expectant families throughout the full spectrum of their reproductive journey. The curriculum captures the specialized evidence-informed knowledge, skills, and experience relating to anatomy, physiology, and the emotional, physical, and cultural aspects of pregnancy and birth required by Doulas to provide families with information and support during pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, and including loss. In addition, students are introduced to business management/entrepreneurship concepts and strategies, including business ethics, contracts, marketing and sales techniques, and personal financial management.

Learning Outcomes

• Assist with the delivery of family-centred maternity care in collaboration with members of the health care team.
• Examine the historical, political, and cultural aspects of the provision of maternity care both locally and globally and identify how they shape the experiences of contemporary mothering to meet the needs of clients.
• Apply knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of a woman during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum to address the concerns and needs of clients.
•  Provide evidence-informed physical, emotional, physiological, and psychosexual support to enhance the comfort, health, and well-being of individuals and families as they negotiate the various transitions associated with pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
• Provide families with community and online resources related to the childbearing years to empower clients to make evidence-informed choices regarding pregnancy and birth options and newborn care, including infant and newborn nutrition.
• Describe diagnostic testing procedures and medical interventions routinely used during pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period, and recognize the normal ranges and parameters for those test results.
• Identify early signs of maternal physical and mental health concerns, and refer clients to appropriate community resources in a timely manner.
• Foster professional relationships with clients, family members, caregivers, and other doulas.
• Establish and maintain a professional doula business in accordance with professional, legal, and ethical guidelines.
• Identify and support clients’ needs based on the theories of diverse social determinants of health, cultural humility, and intersectionality and the principle of harm reduction.

This two-year diploma in accounting is designed to prepare graduates to work in an accounting environment at the entry or intermediate accounting level. This accounting diploma program starts with accounting fundamentals and then moves to detailed accounting principles and concepts, including computerized accounting. When you graduate, you’ll have the skills required for success in a corporate accounting department in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, merchandising, small business accounting, banks and other financial institutions. You’ll also work in public accounting firms and federal, provincial and municipal government offices. This program is an ideal starting point for those seeking a career in accounting.

The Horticulture Technician Diploma is a two-year co-op program with the emphasis on the practical aspects of horticulture. The program develops the academic and practical skill level in students that allow them to easily match a growing need in the green profession. All graduates can be fully employed in the field; there are, according to Landscape Ontario, the provincial trade organization, over 1600 positions available in horticulture in the province annually. Additionally, many opportunities exist out-of-province and even out-of-country.

The first year of the Horticulture Technician program is academic-centred while the emphasis in the second year is on hands-on practical training. Approximately 80% of the scheduled class time in the senior year is spent outside the classroom in courses such as Landscape Field Construction, Greenhouse Plant Production, Arboriculture and Garden and Landscape Maintenance.

Students and faculty participate in practical lab sessions while maintaining and redeveloping the grounds of the campus in real-time situations.  The A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens, in near-by Strathroy, greatly enhances the practical experience in a world-class estate garden which houses a remarkable collection of rare and endangered plants.

Students graduate with an Ontario College Diploma (Co-operative Education Endorsed) and while in the program students are given the opportunity to complete optional training in chainsaw use and the provincial pesticide license. Fanshawe College is the first institution in North America to integrate the CLT (Certified Landscape Technician) a national standard of proficiency into the program. Students will complete practical and written tests during their senior year and if successful will also be able to add the CLT designation to their names.

All students, upon registration, become members of the Student Chapter of Landscape Ontario, the largest student driven chapter in the province.

Students participate in a number of professional opportunities at various shows throughout the year.  In past years Fanshawe has won many medals both provincially and nationally in the Landscape Gardening Skills Competition. Students participate regularly in Landscape Congress in Toronto, building the entrance garden in their final term. Senior students also volunteer in building gardens and assisting with the maintenance of gardens at Canada Blooms in Toronto. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fanshawe College and, as a result, student experience is greatly enhanced through this partnership which includes both summer internships and programmed events at the gardens.

The College has active industry partnerships in areas such as: lawn and garden equipment and suppliers, greenhouse service suppliers, landscape suppliers and services as well as professional associations such as the Landscape Ontario, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Royal Horticultural Society, Scottish Rock Garden Society, the North American Rock Garden Society, the Hardy Plant Society, the American Public Gardens Association and the Ontario Rock Garden Association.

Industry support and corporate sponsorship allows the program to use the latest technology, tools and equipment in the teaching labs; annually over $100,000.00 of support is received from industry.

The Gardens of Fanshawe College and the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens are recognized as a botanical garden by Botanic Gardens Conservation International and are home to over one million plants of some 4,000 species. Most of the collections are labeled and are propagated in our greenhouse at Fanshawe College and our nursery site in the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens in Strathroy. Ten students in the program maintain the gardens during summer under the supervision of our two staff horticulturists. Students will spend both class and independent practical periods at both locations. Our annual open garden and plant sale in June at the A.M. (Mac) Cuddy Gardens draws over one thousand visitors.

Co-operative Education:
This two-year program has two co-op work terms.  Students who fulfill both the academic and co-op requirements of the program will be eligible to graduate with a Co-op Endorsed Diploma.  More information about Co-operative Education can be found at www.fanshawec.ca/co-op.

The Construction Engineering Technology program will develop the technical knowledge and skills required to oversee and manage the construction of residential, industrial, commercial and institutional projects - from the conceptual planning phase through to project completion and contract closeout. 

Students within the advanced diploma will learn how to estimate labour, material and costs, write and understand contacts, establish a project’s budget, develop a site logistic plan, schedule and manage construction projects, and perform on-site field engineering, field inspections, and utilize the latest onsite technology. You'll also learn the soft skills required to be an effective, respected leader - both in the office and on-site.

The Game - Design program at Fanshawe College is an intensive three-year advanced diploma focusing on the tools and techniques necessary to gain employment in the video game industry. The goal of the program is to provide students with the professional and artistic skills necessary to create compelling and innovative games.

Students will develop 2D and 3D skills by studying a curriculum focused initially on the core principles of video game creation. Foundation courses including art & design theory, modelling, animation, texturing, anatomy and drawing will provide the basis for understanding the various components that make up a video game. An integral part of the Game - Design program at Fanshawe College is its relationship to the local community. London, Ontario has a vibrant and growing video game industry. Professionals from this community include game designers, animators, producers and art directors who will play an important role by providing mentorship to students through critique and guest lectures.

Graduates of this program will find entry-level positions in the video game industry as concept artists, animators, level and game designers.

The Interactive Media Development - 3D Visualization Program at Fanshawe College is an intensive three-year advanced diploma focusing on the tools and techniques necessary to gain employment in the fields of visualization and emerging interactive technologies. The goal of the program is to provide students with the professional, technical and artistic skills necessary to create innovative visualizations, prototypes and info-graphics.

Students will develop 2 and 3 dimensional design skills by studying a curriculum focused initially on the core principles of visualization technologies and interactive media. Foundation courses including image and motion design, interactive production, project management, and visual communication will provide the basis for understanding sophisticated technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Throughout the second year, students will study more advanced concepts of visualization including 3D modeling, game engine simulations, visualization statistics, generative art and user experience design. In the third year, students will continue with advanced visualization studies with emphasis on an integrative capstone project (individual or group) or a client based applied research project internship.

An integral part of the 3D Visualization program at Fanshawe College is its relationship to the local community. London, ON has a vibrant and growing interactive media industry. Professionals from this community include business leaders and entrepreneurs, creative directors, interactive designers, programmers, game designers, and producers who will play an important role by providing mentorship to students through critique and guest lectures.

Graduates of this program will find entry-level positions in the visualization industry as interactive designers and programmers, 3D specialists, prototype and visualization designers.

The Plumbing Techniques program is an Ontario College Certificate program designed to prepare graduates for entrance into a plumbing career through the understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of the plumbing trade and the associated tools and materials. Students will participate in the practical application of fundamental plumbing activities in labs on site at the College in addition to the theory learned in a face-to-face web-enhanced environment. This is an entry level credential and students are not required or qualified to become members of a professional or regulatory body upon completion.

Learning Outcomes:-

• Work according to contractual obligations; the project manual; applicable laws, standards, bylaws, and codes.
• Execute plumbing projects effectively and accurately by interpreting graphics, drawings and written documentation.
• Work responsibly and effectively with others and in accordance with appropriate practices, procedures and in compliance with health and safety legislation.
• Use tools and equipment for basic installation manufacture, and repair of components to required specifications.
• Contribute to the organizing and planning of plumbing installation projects.
• Solve routine plumbing issues using a variety of problem solving approaches.

This two-year conservatory program will give you practical experience in acting for the stage, mask work, play analysis, improv, and acting for the camera. You'll also take other specialized master classes and will work with professional artists on a graduating project that will come together as a professional production.

You'll be guided through a process of discovering a method of acting that brings out your full potential and you'll emerge with a deep understanding of Shakespeare, theatre history, movement for actors, and the business of acting. You'll emerge with a strong foundation for launching your professional career.
