The Customs Border Services program will prepare you for a career on the front line of global trade and law enforcement.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
New technologies and responsibilities are at the forefront of current customs and border services activities and procedures. The scope of border operations continues to expand as our economy becomes increasingly tied to the global marketplace. As cross border trade exceeds well over one billion dollars a day, our "smart border" needs to efficiently manage the flow of legitimate trade and travellers as we move toward an environment in which the exchange and use of electronic data between countries, and within Canada, becomes a permanent reality. The result is the continued growth of challenging new career opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) uses its front line law enforcement employees, Border Services Officers (BSOs), to fulfill its roles and responsibilities. The BSOs are trained to function as both a Customs and an Immigration official, depending upon the needs of the port of entry where they are employed. As Canada’s first line of defence, they are also trained and equipped to protect themselves and to ensure our overall safety and well-being.

The Customs Border Services program provides experiential, hands-on learning with real life enforcement tools such as a baggage x-ray machine, travellers’ baggage and a practice automobile, to help prepare you for common enforcement-related activities in the field with the CBSA. This training is also beneficial for the non-enforcement jobs found in the brokerage, consulting, transportation and private (import/export) industries. Throughout this program you will:

Learn the role and legislative jurisdiction of Customs, Immigration and Canadian Food Inspection (Border Services), including enforcement techniques and procedures.
Review Customs legislation, procedures and documentation, and Immigration legislation
Gain an appreciation for global diversity through additional study of the legislation and regulations relating to other government departments.
Develop the computer, communications, dispute resolution and critical thinking skills that today's employers are demanding both in the private and public sectors of Border Services in Canada.
At the conclusion of your regular courses and curriculum within the program, you will participate in a mandatory field placement (co-op) in a private industry/business, customs brokerage or public agency to gain valuable work experience that often results in an offer of employment if you meet their standards.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The Customs Border Services program’s field placement is five consecutive weeks in length; enough time to really get into the work you'll experience in your career. The Child and Youth Care program prepares individuals to provide care and treatment for children or adolescents experiencing a range of social, emotional, behavioral, or learning challenges.

Program Highlights
Child and Youth Counsellors (CYCs) are involved in all facets of care from intake, to assessment, to program planning, to goal formulation, and intervention. Practitioners provide assistance through a variety of treatment strategies and work as an integral part of a treatment team. Child Youth Counsellors team up with teachers, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists as well as other social services providers to deliver a holistic approach to caregiving.

• This program ensures that you will acquire the necessary skills for employment as a Child and Youth Care ?Practitioner and it is fully ?acredited by ?the Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation Board of Canada (CYCEAB).

WORK EXPERIENCE
Placements can take place locally or outside the Peterborough area. Placements are integrated with seminars to provide extra support and direction to students during the three placement experiences. The program provides over 1200 hours of placement experience and preparation.

Delivered at our campus in Peterborough, this is one of the few two-year Graphic Design advanced diploma programs offered in Ontario. In this intensive, compressed program, three years of study is completed over a two- year period. Graduates are ready to start their graphic design careers in just 24 months.

Students in Fleming’s accelerated graphic design program learn and work in a unique, contemporary design studio space; in this “classroom as design lab and studio,” they discover what it takes to become a professional designer, and how to thrive in this fast-paced industry.

Students gain the skills and understanding required to communicate ideas in digital and printed media through extensive and varied applied learning experiences. At the end of six continuous semesters, they are fully-prepared to hit the ground running, ready to launch their design careers in any industry that requires creative problem solving through visual communication.

Fleming College's Paralegal program is specifically designed to prepare you, as a graduate, to meet Ontario’s paralegal licensing standards. The program is accredited by the Law Society of Ontario.

Program Highlights
The Fleming Paralegal diploma is accredited with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO ). The LSO is the governing body for paralegals. Fleming program courses meet all competency requirements and prepare you to write the licensing exam and become a member of the LSO. As a licensed paralegal in Ontario you can commission documents and represent clients dealing with lawsuits falling within the jurisdiction of Small Claims Court. You can act for people facing summary conviction charges under municipal by-laws, provincial statutes or the Criminal Code. Some serve as by-law enforcement personnel, or act in a prosecutorial capacity for municipal governments. Paralegals are also trained to assist clients through the potentially complex proceedings of tribunals such as the Landlord and Tenant Board, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, or the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal. Some paralegals choose to work under the supervision of lawyers or other paralegals, while others offer their services directly to the public.

Work Experience
The 160-hour unpaid field placement is an opportunity to get an understanding of the demands and rewards of this career. Field Placement can be completed during the final 15 week semester of the program or can extend beyond your final academic semester. Placement opportunities must be within scope of practice as provided by the LSUC. In some cases a clear criminal record check may be required by the placement employer.

ENTRY TO UNIVERSITY
Trent University Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
This program was developed in collaboration with Trent University. As a result, Trent University will grant a total of five first year credits (in English, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, plus one unassigned credit) to graduates of this program who achieve an overall average of 70%, and no individual grade of less than 65% in their Literature, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Composition and Critical Analysis courses. Successful program graduates will have obtained the credits required for first year of Trent's Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. (Other Trent degree programs also recognize these Fleming courses for advanced standing.)

Trent University Indigenous Bachelor of Education
To be eligible, applicants are required to self-identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit, and must also have achieved a 75% cumulative average in the University Transfer program. Successful applicants will be awarded five credits out of the 25 credit degree.

Carleton University Bachelor of Arts
At Carleton University, program graduates with an overall average of 70% or higher may be granted up to five full transfer credits, equivalent to first year towards the Bachelor of Arts degree.
A growing number of other universities recognize the program for significant credit towards their degrees.

Since you will attend all classes with the same group of students, you will come to know one another quickly, share ideas and frequently carry on academic discussions outside the classroom.

During the five semesters in the Practical Nursing program, you will learn the concepts and skills related to health and nursing. You will also learn nursing practices and interventions in specific health situations. In addition, you will have the opportunity to study courses such as anatomy and physiology, communication, introductory psychology and human growth and development. After successfully completing Fleming's five-semester diploma program, graduates are eligible to write the national examinations with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and become registered to practice in Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse. Graduates wishing to be registered with the CNO will be asked to sign a declaration of their status regarding:

• Citizenship
• Any conviction of a criminal offense under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
• Professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity in Ontario
• Any mental or physical disorder which makes it desirable in the public interest that the person not practice nursing

The Office Administration- Executive diploma is a fast-track program that can be completed in one calendar year (3 semesters). With the advanced administration and technology skills, along with professional networking connections acquired in the program, you’ll be prepared for a wide range of careers.

Therapeutic Recreation professionals use a variety of techniques to help their clients enjoy greater independence, improve their health and well-being, and reduce or eliminate the effects of their illness or disability.

Program Highlights
This three-semester program prepares graduates for work in recreation, health or social service delivery settings. The program is offered in a combination of on-campus and online courses. During the first two semesters, you are required to be on campus two days of each week for the on-campus courses. The remainder of the courses are taken online. The program structure of combined class time and online learning provides you with the flexibility to participate in volunteer activities and to maintain family/work balance. This style of program delivery allows for practitioners currently working in the field to return to school and upgrade their skills without having to leave their job.

On the days you are on not on campus for courses, you’ll have the time to explore a variety of volunteer roles within the profession. This experience will enhance your learning and you will develop valuable industry connections and relationships for placements and possible future employment.

The third semester is a supervised field placement which can take place in the work setting and geographic location of your choice. Assistance to obtain the placement that best suits your goals will be provided.

You will learn specialized skills and how to utilize a wide range of interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs of clients. You will learn to:

• Complete client assessments, working closely with patients/clients/residents and their family members
• Develop and evaluate group and individualized programs
• Use a variety of facilitative techniques, such as arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, and music to assist individuals to participate in meaningful recreational activities

The Tourism-Global Travel program combines practical hands-on experiences with class lectures. Students learn the key elements of the travel business through courses such as: Discovering Destinations, Customer Service Management, Tour Operations, Tourism Trends, Marketing, Travel Reservations, Digital Media, Adventure & Ecotourism and Hospitality Sales & Service, plus electives in business and general education courses. You have the opportunity to travel on a field trip and volunteer on projects with local people, experience and understand why people travel to resort destinations. You are also required to solicit and complete a minimum of 200 hours of field placement, to practice the theories and skills studied in class.
