Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering - Information Systems Engineering discipline prepares you for an interdisciplinary field of study that encompasses rapidly changing, evolving and converging areas of computer, software, networking, telecommunications, mobile applications, internet and cyber security. Following the first year, the curriculum covers the core courses in various subjects such as digital systems, operating systems, embedded systems, communication engineering, software engineering, mobile applications and systems, and more. In the third year, the program branches out to two specializations, Internet of Things (IoT), and Data Network and Security, with eight specialization courses in each. 

The program also provides project-based learning, experiential learning with hands-on and practical training, applied research opportunities, and work-integrated learning activities. Students will have opportunities to solve real-world problems while developing professional skills such as teamwork, communication, presentation and project management. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.

Humber’s Sport Management advanced diploma program prepares you to manage the business of sport. You will develop a thorough knowledge of the structure and functionality of the Canadian sport industry including specific responsibilities and governance structure of organizations; rules and regulations governing sport; coaching standards; tournament hosting and scheduling; and sport sponsorship development. Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
  • Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
    • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Diploma in Hospitality - Event Management

Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program offers you the knowledge, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certification necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event planning professional.

Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities aimed at assisting students prepare for and transition to valued positions in the event industry including:

  • On-site event management experience

Certificate of Culinary Skills

From the business side of hospitality, to à la carte cuisine, Humber’s Culinary Skills certificate program prepares you for a career as a professional chef. Gain theoretical and practical skills while learning in cutting-edge labs and real-world settings with the latest kitchen technology and equipment.

Many graduates of this one-year program continue on for another year and complete the Culinary Management diploma program or enter our Cook Apprenticeship program.

Students also have the opportunity to experience preparing meals on the Humber Food Truck, Humber’s classroom on wheels. A fast-track program is implemented for the January start. The first semester (January to April) is immediately followed by the second semester (May to August).

The curriculum for this program is similar to the first year of the Culinary Management program. This allows students to transition into the Culinary Management program after the first semester or at the end of the second semester with bridging courses. Alternatively, students are able to move into the Cook Apprenticeship program providing they have an eligible employer.

Humber’s Building Construction Technician diploma program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma, the program introduces students to the carpentry trade, gives practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from this diploma program into the advanced diploma program. Additionally, Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma and Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma offer additional pathways and laddering opportunities.

You will learn worksite health and safety practices in accordance with legislation and regulations; and how to review building plans and complete work in compliance with contractual obligations, codes, applicable laws, bylaws, standards and ethical practices. Coursework will include sustainability practices.

You will learn to produce project sketches and documents in accordance with project specifications, assist in the preparation of estimations and to safely operate tools. You will be well-prepared for all building stages - from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes.

Optional Co-op

This program offers a co-op option. A co-op work term enables you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession.

For students who are accepted into the program, one co-op work term will take place between Semesters 2 and 3. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. This program builds on skills learned in the Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program and will prepare you to work in all fields where electric circuits and systems are found. You will acquire strong fundamental knowledge to help you build a career in all new and emerging technologies manufactured here in North America like photonics, laser technology, medical imaging, new electronic materials and devices, intelligent systems, entertainment, and broadcasting systems. The program takes a system design and integration approach to electronic applications, and you will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in:

  • Electronic circuits: analog, digital, radio-frequency and programmable circuits
  • Connectivity and interface design, embedded microcontrollers, IoT integration
  • The full skill set of computer networking including wireless networks

You will spend approximately half your time in labs working with electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits and learning how to embed these circuits into cell phones, audio equipment, high-definition (HD) video systems, robots, computers and advanced instruments.

Humber’s Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle Promotion diploma program prepares you for a career promoting health and wellness to individuals and groups of all ages, and encouraging people to live a healthier lifestyle. Unique in nature, it is the only diploma program of its kind in Canada. In this program you will:

  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of general and clinical nutrition, sport nutrition and physiology
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience coaching and conducting health promotion seminars and workshops in our unique Humber Centre for Healthy Living
  • Learn how to relate knowledge of essential nutrients into practical nutritious eating for clients by discovering the techniques of healthy cooking, food demonstration, recipe development and menu planning

Work Placement
All students will complete a 15-week experiential learning course involving our on-campus Humber Centre for Healthy Living. Components of this placement include:

  • Nutrition awareness events: students develop and deliver group educational workshops, displays and sessions for community, business and industry partners in various settings
  • Practising nutrition coaching to Humber students and staff: students provide nutrition education for clients and support them in developing and achieving their health and nutrition related goals. This includes diet assessment, recommendations and development of a client tool kit

Diploma in Business Management

Learn about the inner workings of Canada’s dynamic business scene and develop the critical expertise to ignite your career within it. Humber’s Business Management diploma program gets down to business with a practical, skills-based approach that teaches you everything you need to know to achieve your goals and make a difference in organizations. Our curriculum gets you up to speed on the essential aspects of business including marketing, e-commerce, accounting, business writing and communications. Through individual and group assignments in courses taught by experienced professionals and entrepreneurs, you’ll build your business management knowledge and gain first-hand insights into current business practices, trends and opportunities.

In the first year, you will be introduced to an overview of fundamental business disciplines including the mathematics of finance, PC essentials, marketing, microeconomics, business law, services marketing and the principles of management. In the second year, the focus includes business computer applications, accounting, e-commerce, human resources administration, operations management, business finance, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Work Placement

In Semester 4, you will be assisted in finding a paid or unpaid business work placement, where you will practice your skills during an 84-hour assignment. This adds valuable hands-on experience to your resumé and provides excellent networking opportunities.

Humber’s Graphic Design advanced diploma program develops creative and strategic designers who execute for a wide range of interactive media such as web and screen, user interaction, motion design and also traditional print products. While learning and mastering design concepts, you will generate creative solutions and produce visuals for effective multimedia communication. As you gain desirable knowledge and skills, you will be exposed to the many topics and tasks required in contemporary design work. You will become strategically and typographically skilled and master digital, editorial, interactive, information, motion and web design techniques. Additionally, relevant programming and entrepreneurship knowledge will round out a comprehensive skillset.

As part of our interaction and design common platform cluster, this program will expose you to many aspects of design and allow you to collaborate with students in related fields. The first semester is shared with the Multimedia Design and Development program, and the first year of this program is shared with the Web Design and Interactive Media program. Your exposure to different types of design work and common programming elements will enable you to investigate your options and choose a focus prior to your second year of study.

You will explore the many facets of graphic design and be instructed and trained on industry-based technology and software. Cross-disciplinary projects will allow you to develop collaborative and teamwork skills while preparing you for workplace environments. This program includes the unique opportunity to work with BuildingF, our in-house creative & business communications hub, working on real projects for clients while building your portfolio and professional contacts.
