Humber’s Cosmetic Management diploma program gives you the business base and cosmetic skills that you need for a career in the growing cosmetic and personal care industries.

The curriculum, designed in collaboration with the cosmetics industry, focuses on current market trends and touches on all disciplines that students require to enter the personal care products sector. Courses encompass training in cosmetic and skin care product ingredients, retailing, merchandising, marketing and social media, make-up and skin care application, as well as the skills necessary for running an independent business. Topics such as environmental implications and multicultural sensitivity are embedded in each course.

Our program delivers a range of business-focused cosmetic courses. You will be introduced to the history of cosmetics and fashion; retail buying; cosmetic and fragrance product knowledge; and application including colour theory and skin care fundamentals. You will study business ethics and sustainability, cosmetic selling, and counter management. You will learn how to use relevant computer software and build on your vocational skills with advanced cosmetic application and facial techniques.

Rounding out your education, you will develop your entrepreneurial skills and learn how to plan events and product launches as you plan and execute a skin or cosmetic workshop. You will also learn more advanced application techniques for TV, film and special effects.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Assess the chemical composition of cosmetic products and recommend appropriate cosmetic treatments.

• Identify and apply various make-up equipment and techniques used for professional application.

The graduates from the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program are 5G ready. The 5G communications platform will support future innovations in the area of the Internet of Things, augumented reality, industrial automation and automated vehicles including drones. Our graduates build and maintain the infrastructure of communication systems. They learn what it takes to be successful in the communications industry. The wireless program focuses on three main outcomes: RF and Optical test and measurement, IP addressing and networking, and troubleshooting of a number of wireless protocols and systems. 

Our graduates understand the engineering tools and equipment for the testing of systems including drive test tools, RF and Optical test equipment, protocol analyzers, and virtualization and virtualized tools. Students will have access to learn on some of the best and latest equipment available. The curriculum is kept current with the collaboration of our industry partners in the wireless field. Students utilize the latest technologies and small classes taught by experienced faculty and industry leaders.

The Canadian wireless industry supports over 280,000 jobs with sector salary above the Canadian average. In addition, the international wireless telecommunications market is growing. There are numerous employment opportunities in the planning, developing, manufacturing, co-ordinating, implementing, maintaining and managing of telecommunications systems for businesses and government. As the rate of technology adoption increases in Canadian industry, the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program is preparing graduates for these new markets. A 2015 - 2019 labour market report by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) indicates that by 2019, over 182,000 critical ICT positions will be left unfilled.

Graduates of the program work at cell phone service providers, equipment manufacturers, in-house information technology (IT) departments, sales departments, and specialized telecommunication and networking companies.

Humber’s Electrical Techniques certificate program is designed to introduce you to the fundamental elements of the trade. We aim to facilitate your employment by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices. Throughout your program, you will get a solid understanding of the various technical elements of the electrical trade. There will be a significant practical component to the program. Our graduates find a range of employment opportunities with electrical apprenticeship programs, power generation, green energy and automation.

Humber’s Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program emphasizes electronic products, control systems and telecommunications - all built on a strong basis of computer and networking engineering. The program provides you with hands-on experience of electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits. Our experienced faculty will teach you about computer programming, interfacing, local networks, radio frequency circuits, basic programmable logic controllers (PLC), industrial electronics, wired and wireless communication devices, and troubleshooting techniques. You’ll be taught how to embed these circuits into smart devices, industrial equipment, and consumer products.

You’ll also build and test circuit boards, learn electronics fabrication, program PLCs and design embedded systems in our state-of-the-art labs including a prototyping facility.

Humber’s Post-Production graduate certificate program will develop the technological skills, creative and critical abilities you will need to thrive in the post-production industry. You will gain a firm grounding in industry-standard, non-linear video editing software. Through lectures and hands-on work, you will learn the fundamentals of the technical and aesthetic creation of digital media content and get the opportunity to specialize and target specific post-production skills to maximize your marketability in a competitive industry.

You will learn how to collaborate with other departments in the production chain, and how to develop efficient broadcast standard workflows. You will be introduced to the theory and practice of picture and sound editing/mixing, VFX and motion graphics creation, and you will learn how to make professional contacts, engage with employers and guilds, and the basic business skills you will need as a freelancer. You will study the fundamentals of branding and graphic design and produce a marketable portfolio website.

With technology as its main focus, your sound, picture, and visual effects compositing skills will enable you to create content to the industry standards required in the competitive media environment.

• Evaluate documentaries, narrative films, TV series and music videos for creative features and technical aspects.
• Prepare and integrate 2-D and 3-D graphic and animation footage using post-production applications.
• Manage the editing process using an Edit Decision List.
• Complete picture editing projects using non-linear editing suites within specified time frames and budgets.
• Complete audio editing projects using non-linear editing suites within specified time frames and budgets.
• Design and build a network system for post-production applications.

• Distribute interactive content produced through the Web and DVD.

Work Placement

• This program includes a mandatory work placement. We work with you to find a suitable placement in your chosen field of specialization, allowing you to apply the skills you’ve learned in a professional environment. Placements will take place in post-production houses and media companies in Toronto. Work placements are typically unpaid but provide you with the opportunity to further your knowledge in your chosen field and begin to build your resumé and network of professional contacts.

The Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma program (located at the Humber Centre for Trades & Technology) provides you with the knowledge and skills to construct and install basic cabinets, as well as build traditional furniture using recognized trade practices. By completing a series of woodworking projects, students explore various types of joinery and construction techniques using hand tools, portable power tools, stationary machines, as well as computer-based technologies. Time management skills and the ability to work to a deadline are developed and stressed throughout the program. Graduates of the program will be able to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture, and apply a finish. Graduates are able to safely operate most common stationary woodworking machinery, as well as program and run a number of CNC machines.

Employer interest in our graduates has grown steadily during the program’s history. We offer a comprehensive program that provides a solid grounding in woodworking and prepares a student for employment in a wide range of areas including store fixtures, architectural millwork (doors and windows), the kitchen cabinet industry, and furniture construction. Our advisory committee of industry professionals reviews our curriculum and ensure that students are receiving relevant training to prepare them for work in a range of woodworking related fields.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Systems navigators assist with navigating complicated and interrelated systems and are the primary source of communication between the inter-disciplinary team and individuals, acting as an advocate and guide.

You will acquire skills to assess diverse clients’ service priorities and to develop personalized care plans. Building on your current professional knowledge and practice, you will learn about the complex systems in which support services are provided to patients and clients. In addition, you will learn the business and economics of service delivery systems and how professionals’ roles and responsibilities intersect.

This program will prepare you for an exciting career in the emerging field of systems navigation. Graduates will be prepared to work across various health and community service systems and will also have the skills to take on client leadership roles specific to seamless service delivery for patients and clients, often acting as the single point of contact. Career opportunities exist in the fields of nursing, occupational/physical therapy, social services, mental health and addictions, and child and youth care. 

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
• Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
  • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
  • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
  • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
• Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice.
• Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language.
• Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts.
• Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner.
• Engage in, and plan for, ongoing personal and professional development, networking/community relations and inter- professional collaboration.
• Provide effective leadership and contribute to the supervision and mentoring of all team members, including licensees, support staff, and/or interns in a professional, caring and creative manner through providing appropriate direction as it relates to the delivery of funeral service.
• Lead, establish, maintain and participate effectively in funeral establishment work teams consisting of licensees, support staff and/or interns demonstrating at all times the ability to learn, grow and work together.
• Care for and handle the deceased respectfully and safely at all times.
• Complete and perform effectively and efficiently all non-embalming preparation processes and arterial embalming and restoration processes.
• Direct funeral services and visitation in a respectful and sensitive manner consistent with the direction of the legal representative.
• Complete prepaid contract related documents and related financial matters in accordance with applicable legislation.
• Coordinate and deliver the selected disposition services and follow up services, effectively, professionally and consistent with, and supportive of, the wishes of the legal representative.
• Make decisions ethically and professionally based on a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required of an owner/manager of the applicable business licence class pursuant to the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA).

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Humber’s Media Communications diploma program is designed to meet industry demands within multi-faceted areas of the communications industry. Students graduate with a diverse range of marketable skills in photography, graphic design, web design and writing, social media, and videography.

In the program, you will learn how to:

• Be effective transmedia storytellers across multiple platforms
• Produce corporate video and audio for the web and other applications
• Design, write for and edit effective websites
• Shoot professional photographic images in both the studio and on location environments
• Create and edit content using current software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
• Learn how to establish, operate and market your business through a course in freelance and project management
• Research, write and design communications such as media kits, blogs and brochures

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring you are learning current and relevant information in state-of-the-art labs from industry experts – people who know the trends and effective methods of communications.

The first semester of this program is shared with the two-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma, the three-year Journalism advanced diploma, the two-year Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma, and the three-year Public Relations advanced diploma programs, allowing the flexibility to continue in any of these five programs in second semester.

Work Placement
Students will participate in a mandatory work placement which takes place in the last semester of study. During that time, students hone their skills in professional environments, developing digital communication solutions. They build complete portfolios which, when they graduate, have them standing out from their competitors as corporate communications professionals.

Humber’s Plumbing Techniques certificate program is a comprehensive introduction to the trade. You will learn the basics of plumbing including theory, code and blueprints, as well as gain significant hands-on experience. Upon completion of this program, you will have the skills necessary to pursue a career in the plumbing trade.

Water, waste and sewage systems – hallmarks of urban living – require high-level skills to design, install and maintain. In the Plumbing Techniques certificate program, you’ll be introduced to the skills necessary to begin your career as a plumber. Graduates of this program may find a range of career opportunities including apprenticeship, construction industry work, green energy initiatives, and municipal water and sewage treatment. According to BuildForce Canada, an estimated 248,000 construction workers are expected to retire over the next decade. This demographic trend represents as significant loss of skilled workers that will require new workers to replace them. Given this potential shortage, as well as the boom in construction across the country, individuals with plumbing skills are projected to have an advantage in the job market.
