Overview

 

The Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning Ontario Graduate Certificate was developed to fill the need for a growing and in-demand skillset. Designed for students with experience in computer programming, software development or computer science, students learn the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to apply AI models and ML algorithms to a broad range of practical applications including natural language processing, image processing, computer vision and for business decision making. Students will also gain experience in applying AI tools in data analytics and data mining. Technical skills will be complemented by knowledge in regulations, policy and ethics in applying AI technology, as well as project management, communication and teamwork skills.

In the final semester, learners complete an industry-supervised capstone project to solve real-world problems and to showcase skills and knowledge that they have learned in the program. Their projects are showcased at an exhibition event to industry partners, community leaders, faculties and peer students. The program also provides opportunities to engage with a broad community and industry network through guest speakers, network events and applied research in collaboration with industry partners.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  1. Design and implement secure artificial intelligence and machine learning software systems and applications using data science, mathematics, data mining principles, algorithms and tools to meet client needs.
  2. Defend the algorithms and models used to solve problems in artificial intelligence and machine learning projects through clear and accurate written and verbal presentations to stakeholders.
  3. Comply with corporate policies, ethical standards, and industry and government regulations, in implementing artificial intelligence solutions.
  4. Evaluate industry trends and emerging technologies in artificial intelligence and machine learning to inform personal and business practices and maintain currency and relevancy in the field.

The Canadian Retirement Home (also known as Retirement Communities) industry is made up of multiple private residences within a single dwelling where residents live independently but interact frequently for recreation, meals and common interests. It is important to note that retirement homes are not long-term care or nursing homes where support is provided on a daily basis and residents may be housed in multi-resident spaces. The Canadian Retirement Home industry is expected to double in the next five years as Canada experiences a surge in aging baby boomers. This rapid expansion is creating an industry-wide need for qualified staff and retirement home managers. 

Students in the Retirement Home Management Graduate Certificate program will be trained to fill this need by developing foundational skills in the areas of leadership, administration, hospitality, financial management, sales and marketing, health, wellness and recreation, food and nutrition, and human resources management. This program was developed with industry professionals from companies (Verve Senior Living, Chartwell Retirement Residences, Revera Retirement Living and others) of various sizes and scopes within the Retirement Home Management industry. 

The program is ideal for students interested in this rapidly growing area, as well as those already working in the senior living industry who want to increase their level of responsibility or progress in their career. The program is also suited to those interested in related industries such as recreation, hospitality, food and beverage, nutrition, and sales. 

Work Placement
This program will provide students with the hands-on practical exposure to the retirement home industry and the opportunity to specialize in their chosen area. It consists of a 200 hour placement in an approved retirement community of the student's choice. Students will have an opportunity to observe and learn from experienced professionals in a real-life work setting, while integrating their classroom learning in order to gain required hands on experience.  Students have the support of a faculty internship co-ordinator and are able to apply to a variety of retirement communities run by our industry partners. They also have the opportunity to seek an employer for an approved internship. This work placement will take place after the second semester.

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering - Information Systems Engineering discipline prepares you for an interdisciplinary field of study that encompasses rapidly changing, evolving and converging areas of computer, software, networking, telecommunications, mobile applications, internet and cyber security. Following the first year, the curriculum covers the core courses in various subjects such as digital systems, operating systems, embedded systems, communication engineering, software engineering, mobile applications and systems, and more. In the third year, the program branches out to two specializations, Internet of Things (IoT), and Data Network and Security, with eight specialization courses in each. 

The program also provides project-based learning, experiential learning with hands-on and practical training, applied research opportunities, and work-integrated learning activities. Students will have opportunities to solve real-world problems while developing professional skills such as teamwork, communication, presentation and project management. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. Humber’s Building Construction Technician diploma program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma, the program introduces students to the carpentry trade, gives practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from this diploma program into the advanced diploma program. Additionally, Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma and Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma offer additional pathways and laddering opportunities.

You will learn worksite health and safety practices in accordance with legislation and regulations; and how to review building plans and complete work in compliance with contractual obligations, codes, applicable laws, bylaws, standards and ethical practices. Coursework will include sustainability practices.

You will learn to produce project sketches and documents in accordance with project specifications, assist in the preparation of estimations and to safely operate tools. You will be well-prepared for all building stages - from site layout and footings to the application of interior and exterior finishes.

Optional Co-op

This program offers a co-op option. A co-op work term enables you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession.

For students who are accepted into the program, one co-op work term will take place between Semesters 2 and 3. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply.  While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
  • Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
    • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
    • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
    • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Humber’s Project Management graduate certificate program will prepare you to manage complex projects and programs. Given the recognition that project management skills and competencies have to the success of all organizations, this program attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds and industries whether public, private or not-for-profit sectors.

In just two semesters, you will learn the skills needed to move a project through conceptualization, initiation, planning, execution, control and closing. The curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry and closely aligned to the Project Management Institute's Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), as well as international best practices. You will thoroughly explore the key stages of the project life cycle, project economics and financial analysis, procurement management, leadership skills and professional best practices through a comprehensive project delivery model. It also exposes students to the adaptive/Agile approach to project management and the various frameworks that fall under the Agile umbrella. Humber’s Business Administration – Professional Golf Management advanced diploma program provides a solid foundation of transferable business skills in accounting, communications, computer applications, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, human resources, law, marketing, management, mathematics, statistics and business strategy. Then it adds industry-specific skills and knowledge you will need to start your career in this dynamic industry including courses in golf operations, principles of golf, turf management, golf course design, bar and restaurant operations, retail management, and tournament operations and event planning.

Our students have access to our world-class Golf Lab facility, including three golf simulator bays, putting green, golf club build and repair shop, and proshop. Within this facility, our students will gain hands-on experience with the latest golf technology, software and equipment. They will also receive golf coaching, club fitting and swing analysis from our team of PGA of Canada members.

The Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma program (located at the Humber Centre for Trades & Technology) provides you with the knowledge and skills to construct and install basic cabinets, as well as build traditional furniture using recognized trade practices. By completing a series of woodworking projects, students explore various types of joinery and construction techniques using hand tools, portable power tools, stationary machines, as well as computer-based technologies. Time management skills and the ability to work to a deadline are developed and stressed throughout the program. Graduates of the program will be able to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture, and apply a finish. Graduates are able to safely operate most common stationary woodworking machinery, as well as program and run a number of CNC machines.

Employer interest in our graduates has grown steadily during the program’s history. We offer a comprehensive program that provides a solid grounding in woodworking and prepares a student for employment in a wide range of areas including store fixtures, architectural millwork (doors and windows), the kitchen cabinet industry, and furniture construction. Our advisory committee of industry professionals reviews our curriculum and ensure that students are receiving relevant training to prepare them for work in a range of woodworking related fields.

Diploma in Practical Nursing

Humber’s Practical Nursing diploma program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a registered practical nurse (RPN). You will develop, practise and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences. Humber is a leading-edge facility in every respect. This program has been awarded the highest rating for accreditation - a testament to its excellence. Practice and learn in our bioscience and health science laboratories – including clinical simulation labs that provide hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Continuous placement in a range of clinical settings enhances your ability to apply in-classroom education to real-life situations.

You will participate in a total of 1,035 hours of unpaid clinical placements over the course of the program which take place over each semester and give you valuable hands-on experience. The school arranges and communicates with all placements. Throughout the first year of the program, you will participate in a unique community-service learning placement in a variety of community settings. In Semester 2, you will work in a long-term care setting, while Semester 3 takes place in rehabilitation, complex or acute-care settings. In Semester 2 and 3, you will also participate in clinical simulation and/or Stilwell (a virtual learning community designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood). In Semester 4, you will complete a preceptored (one-on-one placement alongside a registered practical nurse) pre-graduate clinical practice.

According to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, nursing is seen as a highgrowth career option with more than 14,000 openings projected annually until at least 2020. As a graduate of our program, you will be able to work in various health-care settings including acute-care hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation services, community services, psychiatry, homes for the aging, public health units, community nursing agencies, clinics, private practices, schools and child-care centres. Many of our graduates go on to complete postgraduate advanced-skills education used in specialty disciplines such as surgery, dialysis, cardiology and emergency.

  • Apply government legislation and regulations bearing on the hospitality and tourism industry including occupational health and safety legislation, employment standards and labour relations, and contract law.
  • Define ethics, integrity and social responsibility, and assess their importance to hospitality administration.
  • Conceptualize and develop a new venture small business plan including the role of the entrepreneur or small business owner/operator in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
