Overview

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering – The Built Environment discipline gives you hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. In upper years students choose from focused study in either sustainable building or built environment information systems. They solve real industry and community problems and gain knowledge and skills in civil, architectural, structural, and environmental engineering. These abilities are in high demand as industry explores the use of innovative and resilient technologies and processes to make the construction of buildings and communities safer, more efficient and sustainable.     

Students use digital design applications and data capture technologies such as 3D scanning and mapping to integrate new and sustainable elements of the built environment into existing buildings, communities and cities. Virtual and augmented reality complement a design thinking approach to solving real world problems. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.

Industrial designers design products for consumers.  Examples include sports footwear, headphones, wearables and automobiles. Graduates of the program are in high demand for the practical skills gained through the program’s hands-on learning environment. These skills include sketching, digital graphic rendering, model-making and computer-aided design (CAD).  The program is project driven, and many of the design projects will involve industry collaboration to ensure real-world relevance.

Students elect a design specialization in Year 3 in one of:

  • Automotive design
  • Product design or
  • Interaction design

Automotive designers design the appearance (styling) of motor vehicles including automobiles, motorcycles and off-road vehicles. Humber is the only industrial design program in Canada that offers an automotive design specialization. 
In product design, there is more emphasis on the method of finding a solution to a user’s problem in order to make doing a task easier or make the user experience with the product more satisfying.
Interaction design is a new offering in the program which recognizes that more and more physical products are integrating a digital component, including touch screens or voice activation.

  • Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services

Humber’s Recreation and Leisure Services diploma program provides you with skills needed to start your career in government, not-for-profit and commercial recreation organizations. You will learn about recreation programming, special event management, staff management, facility operations, marketing and other services within the industry.

The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring it is current and relevant. Within the program, students use ActiveNet software and PerfectMind, the most widely used registration management software in the recreation industry.

Students apply their skills by planning and implementing events for local community and charity organizations. A three-day leadership camp at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre helps build communication and leadership skills while guest speakers, practical training and field trips provide added benefits in preparing you for the workplace.

Learning from professors, as well as managers and directors of recreation programs, centres and agencies will give you valuable exposure to the industry and training in current issues.

Work Placement

  • Qualified students will complete a work placement in Semester 4 – three days per week for 15 weeks (total of 250 hours). The school works with the student to find a placement with an industry partner. The placement occurs across industry sectors including professional sport associations, community and amateur sport governing bodies, and private sector sport organizations. These placements provide valuable experience and industry contacts.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing

Humber’s Nursing degree program focuses on the nurses' role in community/public health, primary health care, long-term care and acute settings. Our small class sizes of 35 to 40 students in our theory and science courses provide you with both individual and group learning opportunities. In our simulation labs, students will practise and improve interpersonal and technical nursing skills in a safe and active learning environment. 

Students will also receive hands-on experience across a number of clinical placements at health-related agencies across the Greater Toronto Area. 

Humber is the only English speaking college in Ontario with access to an on-campus cadaver lab for nursing students. Combine that with small class sizes, leading-edge simulation labs, bioscience and anatomy labs, and extensive clinical work placement opportunities -- Humber students have the competitive edge.

Humber’s Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician diploma program prepares you for a career as a technician capable of designing, installing and servicing many different types of energy systems. As you progress through the program, you will become familiar with the design, installation and service techniques of heating and air conditioning systems in residential and small commercial buildings. As well, you will learn to size, select and maintain equipment for building comfort according to various industry standards.
Today’s residential central air conditioning and heating systems are more energy efficient than those that were typically installed in the past. As this sector continues to address Canadians’ concerns about rising energy prices and the environment, there will be ongoing opportunities for you to work with design contractors in installing, servicing and retrofitting heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration (HRAC) equipment. As well, you could choose to work as a sales representative, specifications writer or service representative. With further experience, you could become an estimator, working with plans and specifications to determine material and labour requirements in preparation of contract bids.

Computer Systems Technician - Information Technology Infrastructure and Services diploma program prepares you for careers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will build a foundation in electrical and logic circuits, and programming. You will also learn about the main hardware and software components of your computer and different features to improve performance of computer systems. Curriculum in the program prepares you for the role of system administrator whose responsibilities include installation, configuration and managing various operating systems including Microsoft servers, different distributions of Linux supported by virtualization tools and network infrastructure, supporting data and network security. You will also learn about data centre technologies that support small- and medium-sized businesses. Humber’s Construction Engineering Technology program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Building Construction Technician diploma, the program introduces you to the carpentry trade, gives you practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from various certificate and diploma programs into the advanced diploma program (including Carpentry and Renovation Technician, Industrial Woodworking Technician, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, and Building Construction Technician).

The advanced diploma program is designed to explore the construction industry from an engineering and management perspective. You will become familiar with the strategies required for project planning and execution for the commercial-based industry.

Throughout the program, you will learn about compliance with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and regulations. You will also learn how to ensure that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Apply financial management principles including cost accounting, management accounting, and audit practices and procedures.
  • Apply management theory and operating practices including the fundamental principles underlying management planning, organizing, directing and controlling in a service-driven industry.

  • Assess the adequacy of strategic and operational decisions through the application and analysis of appropriate financial indicators.
  • Apply strategic marketing principles and techniques in the development of a sound organizational marketing plan.

  • Apply the concepts of organizational behaviour with consideration of their impact on hospitality and tourism operations.
  • Use relevant and current information systems including the use and application of industry-specific and generic software packages relating to operational planning and management.
  • Contribute effectively to the development and implementation of management procedures in the supervision of employees, identify and use appropriate motivational and team-building techniques to achieve desired results.
  • Apply government legislation and regulations bearing on the hospitality and tourism industry including occupational health and safety legislation, employment standards and labour relations, and contract law.
  • Define ethics, integrity and social responsibility, and assess their importance to hospitality administration.
  • Conceptualize and develop a new venture small business plan including the role of the entrepreneur or small business owner/operator in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
  • Use effective interpersonal skills in the workplace.
  • Use effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Conduct meetings and make formal presentations through the use of effective public speaking skills and techniques.

Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) in Workplace Health and Wellness

Humber’s Bachelor of Health Sciences – Workplace Health and Wellness degree program is a unique honours degree program, the first of its kind in Canada. You will explore various industry-specific areas including the most current developments in evidence-based interprofessional practice.

This program is multi-disciplinary in nature, drawing from the fields of leadership; mental, physical, and psychological health; business and communication; and knowledge translation. All combined, students acquire the competencies to develop proactive, evidence-based workplace health and wellness programs and health promotion programs. You will develop the skills to promote employee health, workplace culture, employee engagement and retention.

Principles of equity, wellness coaching, diversity, ethical and legal practices, and knowledge translation are the foundation of your learning. A team approach to learning collaboratively is key and is emphasized in the classroom. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
  • Evaluate determinants of workplace health and wellness in order to make evidence-informed decisions, which are supported by theoretical and practical knowledge of key health and wellness concepts.
  • Employ appropriate methodologies for research, dissemination of information, program planning, implementation and renewal, problem-solving, interprofessional education and collaboration and project management.
  • Apply ethical, evidence-informed strategies to develop and sustain inclusionary proactive and reactive practices, which support continuous improvements in workplace health and wellness.
  • Communicate health and wellness messages effectively in a variety of traditional and innovative media modalities.
  • Develop habits of mind, which demonstrate awareness of the scope and limits of professional practice.
  • Demonstrate responsible leadership, accountability and effective collaboration, modeling the embodiment of personal and workplace health and wellness principles.

Work Placement
You will participate in one mandatory paid or unpaid work placement to gain 14 weeks of full-time professional work experience during the summer months between 3rd and 4th year. The placement will occur in diverse settings such as for-profit or not-for-profit enterprises, health and wellness consulting firms, governmental or educational institutions, or other health and wellness environments.

The experience will enhance the theoretical learning in the program, giving you hands-on skills. Work placement experiences might include successfully developing, evaluating and implementing a workplace health and wellness initiative; functioning as a member of a health and promotion team; working at a public health organization in knowledge translation; working in insurance companies and with workplace insurance claims; and health promotion within a long-term care facility.
