Humber’s Cabinet Making certificate program, located at the Humber Centre for Trades & Technology, provides you with the knowledge and skills to construct and install basic cabinets, as well as build traditional furniture using recognized trade practices. By completing a series of woodworking projects, you will explore various types of joinery and construction techniques using hand tools, portable power tools, stationary machines, as well as computer-based technologies. Time management skills and the ability to work to a deadline are developed and stressed throughout the program.

Graduates of the program will be able to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture and also apply a finish. Graduates are able to safely operate most common stationary woodworking machinery, as well as run a number of CNC machines in a limited capacity.

Humber’s Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management graduate certificate program is designed to build on the knowledge you have acquired in your undergraduate degree by providing in-depth, hands-on instruction in the areas of fitness assessment, health and lifestyle counselling, exercise prescription and delivery, health promotion, group exercise leadership, health and fitness management, marketing and entrepreneurship, ergonomic assessment, and functional abilities assessment. Students learn in small groups instructed by expert faculty currently employed in the fitness and health industry.
Our advisory committee provides regular review and input into our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.
Please note that certain courses in the Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management program require students to participate in fitness classes that will involve physical activity, which may at times be vigorous. Work Placement
Experiential learning is an integral part of this program. The program features three unpaid internship courses, two of which take place on campus and the third of which takes place off campus. During the on-campus courses, students provide fitness assessments and testing, physical activity counselling and prescription services to Humber and partner employees as part of the Humber Centre for Healthy Living (Humber CHL). Students have the opportunity to run workshops for the Humber CHL and its partners, as well as providing healthy tips and videos for the Humber CHL website. Throughout the on-campus internship courses, students participate in seminars with their professors and classmates to critically analyze their experiences and develop the skills required for professional work.
The final work placement is a four-week block placement off campus with one of Humber’s industry partners.

Humber’s Architectural Technology advanced diploma program will train you to use your logical and critical thinking skills as you apply architectural technology to construction and building design. You’ll learn from full-time, award-winning professors and licensed architects who bring real-life perspective and valuable industry contacts to you. The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring you are learning current and relevant material. In the program, you will learn:

• Computer-aided drawing, building methods and project management using the most current computer programs such as AutoCAD and Revit (Building Information Modelling)
• Construction technologies for materials such as wood frame, steel, masonry and precast concrete, and project management skills
• Hands-on skills including building code, building specifications, estimating, and structural and mechanical knowledge
• Sustainable design skills needed in today’s eco-friendly architectural technology field

Courses include instruction in freehand sketching, history of architecture, renovation and restoration, site planning, and technical communications. Architectural Technology electives include bath and kitchen, interior detailing, building code (legal), small building residential design and more.

Get hands-on experience in the architectural technology industry during an optional architectural field placement. The placement normally takes place from May through August following semester four (minimum 400 hours). Humber provides a range of services to support students including working with business, industry and government to identify work placement opportunities.

Humber’s Design Foundation certificate program provides you with the skills to focus your creativity as you begin a career in design.  If you have a clear interest in visual art and design, but want to upgrade or build your portfolio of work, or explore various design disciplines while considering your future career, this is the program for you. With a deep scope of experience in a variety of design facets, our faculty provides you with an industry-current perspective of your work while offering you a broad based preparatory design education. You will develop design skills, techniques and processes; and learn about various professional career choices while developing and refining your comprehensive portfolio. Your training is led by professional designers from a variety of disciplines in a curriculum that features courses in:

• 1, 2 and 3-Point perspective drawing
• 2D and 3D principles
• Colour theory
• Interior design
• Industrial design
• Graphic design
• Design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and AutoCAD

You will also work in professional-quality labs, developing skills that will give you the hands-on experience employers want.

Humber’s Hospitality - Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management diploma program is a leader in hospitality management training. You will develop your business management skills via hands-on learning, theoretical classes and practical labs led by industry experts.

Note:- A fast-track program is implemented for the January start. The first semester (January to April) is immediately followed by the second semester (May to July), resulting in a shorter summer break. The third semester begins in September, allowing students to complete the two-year program in just 16 months.

In fourth semester, students participate in a work placement with a hospitality organization. Our internship co-ordinator provides direction and assistance for each student in securing a placement.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Systems navigators assist with navigating complicated and interrelated systems and are the primary source of communication between the inter-disciplinary team and individuals, acting as an advocate and guide.

You will acquire skills to assess diverse clients’ service priorities and to develop personalized care plans. Building on your current professional knowledge and practice, you will learn about the complex systems in which support services are provided to patients and clients. In addition, you will learn the business and economics of service delivery systems and how professionals’ roles and responsibilities intersect.

This program will prepare you for an exciting career in the emerging field of systems navigation. Graduates will be prepared to work across various health and community service systems and will also have the skills to take on client leadership roles specific to seamless service delivery for patients and clients, often acting as the single point of contact. Career opportunities exist in the fields of nursing, occupational/physical therapy, social services, mental health and addictions, and child and youth care. 

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.

Canada has approximately 675,000 people working in information and communications technology (ICT), and about half of that workforce is in Ontario where the ICT industry accounts for over $30 billion in sales. Help satisfy the continuing demand for skilled IT professionals. Our graduates are able to work as computer programmers, junior web developers, junior database designers, junior software testers, customer support analysts, system co-ordinators, technical sales co-ordinators or technical support representatives.

Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma program gives you a thorough knowledge of materials and mechanical solutions for designing and manufacturing mechanical parts and assemblies. You will learn in Humber’s state-of-the-art labs, offering you the practical experience you need to succeed. Courses focus on:

• Engineering drawings/calculations
• Mechanical operations
• Programming of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam
• Applying design principles and practices
• Design and manufacturing process problems
• Learning 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software – AutoCAD, 3D CAD software – SolidWorks

The curriculum includes courses in solids mechanics, mechanical design, hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), manufacturing and management. You will be able to develop the manufacturing procedures to produce mechanical components.

Begin a career designing and manufacturing with our Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma. According to the Canadian Government’s Working in Canada website, the outlook for jobs in this field is positive. “Due to a concentration of employers such as power plants, large automotive manufacturers and other transportation and goods manufacturers, openings for mechanical engineers should remain steady,” says the report. “Job openings in this field should arise from the creation of new power facilities and production increases in the transportation equipment manufacturing, including aircraft.” Graduates find employment in areas related to mechanical design, production, testing, consulting and service industries, as well as in machine tool sales and service departments. Demand is growing for graduates in fields related to the sustainable economy and in consulting engineering particularly for companies engaged in infrastructure projects.

Humber’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner advanced diploma program is the first and only publicly funded program of its kind offered at a postsecondary institution in Canada. This intensive program is grounded in the TCM Practitioner skillset which has been approved by all provincial TCM regulators in Canada and provides students with the skills and professional experience necessary to become a TCM Practitioner in Ontario. Through a combination of theoretical course-based instruction, as well as several clinical placements, you will gain a necessary understanding of Traditional Chinese and Western medicine practices. Moreover, graduates of the TCM Practitioner program will be trained to conduct a TCM diagnosis and develop appropriate treatment plans by utilizing their skills in acupuncture, herbal medicine, clinical practice management, professionalism and safety. This program is also committed to the promotion of evidence-informed practice of TCM through scientific research.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Critically analyze and evaluate Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) theories and treatment methods to develop professional knowledge and skills required for the profession.
• Assess, diagnose and treat patients using Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) principles, knowledge and treatment methods including acupuncture, herbal medicine, internal and external medicine.
• Perform safe, ethical and effective TCMP skills within a clinical setting.
• Evaluate patients incorporating a bio-medical approach with Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) examination techniques to formulate a TCMP diagnosis and treatment strategy, and perform the treatment in a skillful and professional manner.
• Communicate effectively and educate patients, families, the community and other healthcare providers when providing TCMP practices.
• Advocate for Traditional Chinese Medicine as an effective complementary medicine.
• Adhere to the relevant provincial and federal legislation governing the profession while engaging in safe practices.
• Access current and pertinent research regarding practitioner self-care to maintain a healthy practice.
• Maintain client and business records using professional business practices of a TCMP.
• Establish interprofessional relationships with TCM colleagues and healthcare team members.
• Develop a plan for personal and professional development to enhance work performance and maintain currency in the field.
• Evaluate and implement environmentally related initiatives relevant to the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) profession.
• Apply basic entrepreneurial strategies to identify and respond to new opportunities.

Work Placement

• There are seven mandatory clinical placements that provide students with progressive, professional practice experience in diagnosing, preparing treatment plans, inter-professional collaboration and safe practices. Clinical placements occur throughout the year at community TCM and multi-discipline clinics within the greater Toronto area, as well as at our on-site partner clinic, the Tzu Chi Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The clinical component of the program offers more than 800 hours of direct patient contact, which exceeds the regulatory body minimum requirement of 500 hours.

This is one of the few Pre-Health Pathway programs with real science lab experience with no prior lab experience/studies necessary. There are a multitude of careers in health sciences, and this program is a pathway to explore your options. You will strengthen your science, writing and math skills, and explore career paths in biotechnology, pharmacy technician, registered or practical nursing, Chinese medicine, paramedicine and more.
