Design is everywhere - built into the environments we navigate, the financial and social services we access, the technology we use, products we consume, and processes we use to do our jobs. Design is providing innovative solutions to the most pressing and urgent problems in today’s world. There has never been a more exciting or relevant time to be a designer.

A wide variety of subjects will guide you through important conceptual and practical design fundamentals such as design theory and practice, prototyping, and usability testing. Design courses will help you develop visual storytelling and communication skills, ensuring that you are equipped with top-notch graphic and user design skills upon graduation.

Our program is designed to respond to the increasing demand for designers prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Grounded by the unifying principle of human-centeredness, this program focuses on how design thinking can be harnessed for social change, improve daily experiences, and make processes and interfaces more human-focused.

Humber’s Journalism graduate certificate program will immerse you in advanced research, writing and interview practices, data mining techniques, and a range of storytelling approaches for work within a multiplatform journalistic or information-gathering environment. You will also have the opportunity to pursue discipline-specific reporting in areas such as science, business, sports and the arts.

Using the latest technologies, the program will focus on training graduates for the field of journalism with an emphasis on digital journalism. Graduates will be able to function in a digital/online environment including social media and data-based journalism. An emphasis will be placed on providing you with opportunities to practise and develop your journalism skills through coverage of live field events.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Select relevant content and credible sources to create complex news reports.
• Assess socio-political and historical context, platform requirements, and audience needs when producing news reports.
• Use data gathering, mining and visualization and presentation tools to identify and report stories hidden in big data.
• Assess industry trends to inform professional journalism decisions and develop implementation strategies.
• Conceptualize, produce and manage the implementation of multi-platform digital content using a variety of content management systems and industry-related technologies.
• Manage a project in collaboration with other media professionals as part of a news production process in an integrated, multi-platform digital environment.
• Comply with and support others to work in accordance with industry, professional, legal and ethical standards of practice.
• Develop, implement and evaluate strategies for personal, career and professional development to enhance work performance and maintain currency with industry.

Work Placement
You'll gain valuable first-hand experience through a mandatory work placement, usually unpaid, in the final semester of your studies.

Humber’s Visual and Digital Arts diploma program offers you the opportunity to develop a well-rounded skillset applicable to a broad range of visual arts disciplines. At the Art Commons, Humber’s dedicated art facility, you will learn to effectively plan and produce visual material, and facilitate modes of interactive expression and communication.

Using state-of-the-art software and tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, you will develop skills in painting, drawing, illustration, digital art, photography and installation art. While developing your artistic abilities, you will gain knowledge about anatomy, colour, composition, figurative expressions and art history. You will apply your abilities and learn to create traditional and experimental fine art projects. Throughout the program, you will participate in collaborative projects with your peers, gain the opportunity to exhibit your work in campus galleries, take part in installations and join in critiques. With its focus on experiential learning and critical thinking, this program is an excellent launching point for more advanced creative pursuits.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Produce creative life and representational drawings and paintings, illustrating volume, proportion, perspective, mass and texture with descriptive lighting.
• Create representational digital drawing, paintings and illustrations, using application software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Painter.
• Assess the artistic merit of artwork using an analysis of the creative application of established principles of design and composition.
• Construct pictorial compositions using visual perspective to achieve accurate proportional relationships.
• Light compositions to reveal three-dimensional form.
• Create figurative pictorial compositions, using principles of human and comparative anatomy.
• Critique technical principles of composition in representational drawing, painting and illustration, through analysis of rendering.
• Prepare and present a traditional and creative art portfolio containing both original work and computer generated reproductions.
• Research and create reference materials to support successful completion of a work of art.
• Reproduce, with fidelity, colour as encountered in nature, mixing traditional and digital media.

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.

Canada has approximately 675,000 people working in information and communications technology (ICT), and about half of that workforce is in Ontario where the ICT industry accounts for over $30 billion in sales. Help satisfy the continuing demand for skilled IT professionals. Our graduates are able to work as computer programmers, junior web developers, junior database designers, junior software testers, customer support analysts, system co-ordinators, technical sales co-ordinators or technical support representatives.

In Humber’s Radio and Media Production graduate certificate program, students develop the skills to make entertaining and engaging broadcasts and podcasts. Imagine combining the experience of your degree or diploma with new skills in audio storytelling and broadcasting. Graduates of our program are working in all aspects of radio and podcast production across Canada. Many are instrumental in some of Canada's most popular podcasts, and some have been recognized at the 2019 Canadian Podcasting Awards.
Students get hands-on experience in radio and audio production studio techniques; on-air announcing, newscast performance and sports reporting; hosting live music and public affairs programs; writing stories, shows, commercials and scripts, radio programming and promotions; interviewing techniques and more. They produce exciting audio and visual content including video and podcasts in Humber’s leading-edge production studios.
Students learn about the latest trends and developments in broadcasting and podcasting, and prepare for careers in media production including on-air, on-camera, online and social media.  They create original digital audio content and experience the thrill of having their work distributed by broadcast on the radio, podcast streaming or other means including social media.
Students take intensive classes and workshops with expert faculty where they apply their new skills to studio and broadcast operations.  By second semester, students can choose to perform live in our streaming or broadcast radio stations as a music host, newscaster or announcer. Hands-on training in on-air performance is provided through Humber’s student radio station, on 96.9FM, which is also streamed online and through various listening apps. Alternatively, students can choose to focus on creative studio production techniques and on-air operations.
Work Placement
This program includes a work placement component to give students an opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in their area of interest in the radio and audio production industries. The 160 hour placement is done in the summer semester after two semesters of study and practice. 

Humber’s Law Clerk diploma program provides in-depth training delivered by experienced professionals. Learn from practising lawyers and law clerks who will give you the inside scoop on the current trends and opportunities in the field. As a law clerk, working under the direct supervision of a lawyer, you will be an important part of the team that allows the lawyer to succeed. 

Your law clerk education includes courses on contract, tort, real estate, corporate and family law, as well as in litigation, legal research, wills and estates, and more. Your solid knowledge on diverse areas of law, competence in a range of legal and court procedures, and strong written and oral communication skills will make you a valuable team player in the profession.

Work Placement
Students must complete a 120 hour work placement. The unpaid placement is completed during Semester 4.  All courses from Semesters 1 to 3 must be completed before enrolling in the field placement in Semester 4. Working with the field placement advisor, students are actively involved in pursuing placement opportunities. In addition, students are expected to market themselves to prospective employers and are free to initiate their own placements.

Humber’s Business Administration – Accounting advanced diploma program covers a number of areas including accounting theory, procedures and best practices. Detailed instruction is provided in bookkeeping, auditing, taxation, business law, information systems, finance and management. You’ll gain hands-on experience in industry-standard software such as Profile (personal and corporate tax), Access, Excel, SAGE 50 Accounting (formerly known as Simply Accounting) and Accpac Plus in our Accounting Centre. Learn the inner workings of the accounting field from expert faculty who will teach you key concepts in accounting and taxation related to buying, selling, financing and investing transactions.

Humber’s Business Administration advanced diploma program allows you to develop extensive knowledge on how businesses work and teaches you to become competent in the full range of skills needed to facilitate business operations.

Courses in operations management, accounting, human resources management, marketing research and much more will give you the opportunity to cultivate key business skills such as communication, teamwork, project management and strategic business analysis. This program is built on a common platform of a solid business education – principles of management, marketing, business law, finance mathematics and microeconomics. This common platform is shared with other business diploma programs in year one and is expanded on in year two.

Work Placement
You’ll be assisted in finding a paid or unpaid business work placement where you’ll practise your skills during an 84-hour assignment. This adds valuable hands-on experience to your resumé. Close relationships with the business professionals who constantly update the curriculum will give you valuable networking contacts.

Humber’s Hospitality and Tourism Operations Management graduate certificate program is your fast-track entry into one of the world’s most dynamic industries. Gain the skills needed for success in an exciting career in tourism and hospitality management both in Canada and internationally.

The program covers key areas of the tourism industry from human resources to strategic business planning. The curriculum brings the industry into the classroom and connects the student with the industry through guest speakers, field trips and industry engagement.

Enjoy small class sizes, taught by faculty with extensive industry experience and strong tourism and hospitality connections.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Apply financial management principles including cost accounting, management accounting, and audit practices and procedures.
• Apply management theory and operating practices including the fundamental principles underlying management planning, organizing, directing and controlling in a service-driven industry.
• Use financial operating and statistical reports to assist in intermediate and long-term decision making.
• Assess the adequacy of strategic and operational decisions through the application and analysis of appropriate financial indicators.

Humber’s Enterprise Software Development graduate certificate program provides advanced concepts, skills and knowledge for those currently employed in the information technology and related fields, or graduates of information technology or computer studies programs.

Students will have the opportunity to select their pathway through elective courses ranging from software development, web and mobile application development to big data, business intelligence and database administration. Students will then apply these concepts in variety of hands-on activities and enterprise projects.

In the final semester of the program, students become involved in an industry project supervised by one of the Humber industrial partners, helping students apply and enhance their IT, teamwork, interpersonal and project management skills.

Moreover, through a range of Capstone showcasing events and employer engagement workshops, students will have a chance to showcase their portfolios and capstone project to employers and practise how to reach prospective employers in today's competitive job market.
