The two-year diploma in Business is intended for students looking for a broad, well-integrated business education and the opportunity to study in more than one area of specialization. Built around a strong core of business foundation skills, the Business diplomas appeal to those interested in acquiring specific skills in key business areas such as accounting, marketing, and human resources. 

Highlights

On our Kingston campus, the first semester of Business programs is common for Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources, and Business. At the end of the second semester, students will have an opportunity to confirm their program of choice.

Students become effective communicators, trained in problem solving, teamwork and quality management. They are skilled in the use of current computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation graphics. Two years at college will get you started in a challenging career in business.

How would you describe your experience?

"The General Business program is a great platform for you to explore what elements of business you enjoy and where your strengths lie; time that your first year may simply not allow for. I was not ready nor passionate enough about any of the streams to commit another two years and ~$7000 to one.  
 
Since you have the opportunity to choose both Marketing and HR electives, you can tailor your second year to meet your specific interests within those fields and work with students/faculty from all streams, thus increasing your network. What's more, your second year curriculum includes Project Management and Entrepreneurship, two courses that are not found in the other streams but which really help to round out your learning in all areas.
General Business may not have a placement, but that does not mean your options are diminished. If a placement is what you truly value in the three-year programs, there are many fast track or certificate programs which you can pursue following graduation from Gen Bus which contain placements.
When in doubt, speak with the School of Business faculty as they are always willing to help you. I have often gone to them for career and academic advice; when studying Gen Bus, you have all the more faculty in your corner and two awesome program co-coordinators, Wendy and Adam."

Today’s electrical field is extremely broad and diverse. Employers need motivated people who have the knowledge and skills to design, implement and maintain power generation, distribution and control systems, entertainment and communication systems, and process, automation and manufacturing systems.

The Electrical Engineering Technician Program will provide students with the theoretical and practical skills required to meet these demanding job opportunities. Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program will have a well-rounded practical and theoretical knowledge of many aspects of the electrical field.

Some areas of study will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Canadian Electrical Code usage and application 
• Reading and creating blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams 
• Residential, commercial and industrial wiring 
• Industrial process measurement, calibration and control 
• Power electronics with application to power and motor speed control equipment 
• Industrial automation systems with programmable logic controllers and motor control equipment 
• Power generation and distribution equipment 
• Fire alarm, security and communication systems   

A student graduating from the Office Administration - Legal/Health Services program will graduate with two diplomas, Office Administration - Legal and Office Administration - Health Services, opening the door to a variety of employment opportunities in both the private and public work sectors. Graduate employment rates released in the fall 2019 showed 95%-100% employment.

Students will gain knowledge in the following areas:

• Technical skills:
  • Advanced level Office 365/2019 cloud-based computer application skills including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, OneNote etc.
  • Outlook 365 - students become proficient in producing professional email communications, creating folders to stay organized, use of Outlook calendar to book appointments and schedule meetings.
  • Additional software applications include PCLaw, The Conveyancer, Teraview, Automated Civil Litigation (ACL), Accuro EMR, Adobe Acrobat DC Pro and Sage 50.
  • Students will be required to achieve a keyboarding speed of 50-60 GWPM.
  • Students learn to share and edit documents in a cloud-based environment.  Using MS Teams, collaboration software students learn how to book, attend and chair virtual meetings.
• Soft skills:
  • Client, patient and customer relationships are built on the use of effective and consistent communication as well as the ability to uphold and maintain confidentiality. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively are skills that are highly valued.
  • Employers seek office administrators that are highly organized, forward thinking and have the ability to problem solve.  Students have the opportunity to enhance these skills through learning by example with regular classroom exercises and participating in the student work placement experience.

Globalization is the reality for any business. While you seek focused and efficient advantage in the market place, employers seek managers with practical business understanding of international trade and cultural norms. In the program, you will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to compete in the global business environment. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of varied disciplines including internationally focused finance, sales, logistics, marketing, advertising, human resources and research. Additionally, students explore courses using real-life case studies covering over 120 topics.

Do you love all things science? Investigating questions? Setting up experiments? The Biotechnology Advanced program at St. Lawrence College is a predominantly hands-on, laboratory, and practical based course. As a student you will perform genetic assays, investigate contaminated soil and water, determine food-borne illnesses, clone for proteins, ferment antibiotics, and create plant hybrids.

According to Statistics Canada, Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing global industries with Canada providing a strong and growing employer base in the biotech sector necessitating the demand for well-trained laboratory personnel. Our program employs contemporary molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, chemistry, biochemistry, fermentation and protein technology, applied genetics, cell culture, environmental and analytical instrumentation labs that offer practical training in all aspects of biotechnology with a focus on the hands-on applied skills that ensure our students are ready for immediate integration into the work force. The final 15-week semester of our program is dedicated to providing a real-world learning opportunity by placing our students in a research or industrial work site as an entry-level Biotechnologist.

The CPA program follows an experiential learning approach to education by offering courses that parallel the software development practices used in the modern workplace. Throughout the program CPA students apply concepts learned in the classroom to solve programming problems. They learn to work in project teams, in which they design, develop, and test larger-scale applications. After gaining programming and problem-solving skills, students experience real-world work environments by participating in our third-year work placement program.

The CPA program is a three-year program in which students learn a wide variety of skills, ranging from basic programming practices, problem-solving, software design, critical thinking and application development. Over the duration of the program, students will learn to write programs for desktop, web, mobile, and mainframe platforms. Students learn many programming languages, including C#, C++, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, and Java, and are taught the skills to learn other languages. We are one of a handful of colleges in North America offering mainframe courses in COBOL, CICS, JCL and TSO.

Laurentian University offers a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree at St. Lawrence College in Kingston. The program combines the theoretical underpinnings of university with the practical strengths of college. The relationship is all about providing access to education in a seam­less manner, providing fair credit for prior academic and experiential learning.

There are two primary streams of access to the BBA degree program: an entry-level, four-year degree and an accelerated level designed for college diploma graduates where credit is given for prior learning and experience. The accelerated level entry permits the completion of the degree in as little as three academic terms. Find out more about applying and the levels - here.

The core subjects in the degree program cover the fundamentals of economics, account­ing, financial information systems, financial management, management decision making, organizational behaviour, human resources, strategic planning, and marketing. Commu­nication, analytical and computer skills are emphasized. Elective courses permit students to tailor the BBA to suit their own personal objectives.

In addition to securing full-time employment upon completion of the program, students may apply to graduate and professional programs. Recent graduates have gone on to Master's programs in areas including Business, Economics, and Finance, and to professional programs including Law (LLB), Education (BEd) and Accounting (CPA).

Do you have an interest in fitness and health, or helping others reach their fitness and health goals? If so, this program is for you!

This two-year curriculum includes courses in exercise science, fitness, health promotion, business management, and human relations as well as personal and professional development. Several of the courses will be delivered in the Student Health & Athletic Centre on the Kingston Campus, which provides a state-of-the-art training facility. Students will have the opportunity to obtain additional certifications including the nationally recognized Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) certification from the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness and Spin certifications through Ontario Fitness Council (OFC).

Graduates will offer prospective employ­ers 400 hours of practical experience in the workforce gained from two 5-week work placements in areas of health promotion, inclusive fitness, injury prevention and management, fitness assess­ment and/or personal training and occupa­tional health and corporate wellness.

This program provides training for a career in Policing Services and other branches of Law Enforcement. The goal of Police Foundations is to provide potential police officers and other law enforcement agents with a well-rounded education which prepares them to address the problems of the communities they serve in a flexible and effective manner.

The Mechanical Technician program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career as a Mechanical Technician or as an Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). Upon completion graduates will receive an Ontario College Diploma as a Mechanical Technician.

Industrial Mechanic (Millwrights) perform some or all of the following duties: 

• Read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures. 
• Install, align, dismantle and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment, such as pumps, fans, tanks, conveyors, furnaces and generators according to layout plans using hand and power tools. 
• Operate hoisting and lifting devices to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery. 
• Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions. 
• Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, vacuum, hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 
• Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts. 
• Operate machine tools such as lathes, mills and grinders to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery. 
• Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery.

Highlights
Graduates will also have completed the equivalent of all levels of in-school training required for the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Apprenticeship Program and are well-prepared to write the exemption exams required for this trade. Completing the in-school training is attractive to employers who may wish to register you in an apprenticeship program.
