Overview
This course places particular emphasis on progression and is notable for providing the opportunity to carry out research in each year.
The first year will give you a grounding in the key skills needed for a history of art degree, studying a wide range of visual and material culture. You will also choose a research-oriented, small-group seminar class.
In the following years you will choose from a variety of broader, thematic lecture- and seminar-based units, as well as further research-oriented units.
You will undertake one substantial piece of independent research each year and write a dissertation in your final year. There is the option to study abroad in the second year.

The MSc in Nuclear Science and Engineering will prepare you for a career in industry or academia by providing a thorough grounding in the science and engineering that underpins today’s nuclear energy systems. It combines the strengths of our science and engineering faculties with an established program of nationally recognised industrial research through the Bristol-Oxford Nuclear Research Centre. The MSc offers a unique multidisciplinary experience and is a key part of the South West Nuclear Hub.
It has been developed and delivered in partnership with industry, including a focus on nuclear professionalism. After completing the program, you will be familiar with the nuclear industry and its unique safety culture, which will prepare you to enter the industry or continue in academia.

Our BA Religion and Theology will enable you to understand and explain the ways in which religion significantly shapes the world.
Your first year provides a solid foundation in religion’s complex interaction with the modern world. Subsequent years allow you more flexibility to shape your degree to suit your interests.
In years one and two you will take units covering issues and approaches to the study of world religions. Our rich and challenging liberal arts programme allows you to explore the arts and humanities while building crucial skills in analysis and communication that will be valuable throughout your degree and beyond.
In years one and two you will devote at least a quarter of your studies to your specialist subject pathway, which you will choose from one of the disciplines in the Faculty of Arts.
You will be enrolled on a combination of bespoke core units exploring foundational and interdisciplinary issues in the arts and humanities, which may include the art of writing; the ways history shapes the present – and the present shapes history; and concepts of nature and beauty.
You will also study a language and learn how to work with data. Finally, you will be able to take optional units from the wide range of disciplines offered in the Faculty of Arts.
The final year includes an interdisciplinary dissertation and a unit that provides opportunities for working with organisations outside the University.

Our MSci course is ideal if you want to continue in research or to stand out when applying for a PhD.
Years one and two provide a broad background in biomedical science as well as information about viruses and the diseases they cause. You will study the immune system and how it controls infection. You will also learn about autoimmune diseases that can occur if the immune system attacks the body's own tissues rather than an infectious agent.
You will progress to review the main viral diseases of humankind in terms of their natural history, biology, molecular biology, immunology, pathogenesis and epidemiology. These include HIV, hepatitis B and C, papilloma, influenza and measles, among others. This interdisciplinary program will provide you with the skills, knowledge and expertise to become a practitioner in functional materials research, whether in industry or academia. Our graduates have a strong track record of progressing to full-time employment or further study, with around half obtaining PhD places in Bristol or other leading universities throughout the world.
The program is run by the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN), which engages with a network of more than 100 academics from 15 departments in the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Life Sciences. This rich and diverse community provides truly interdisciplinary training and challenging projects at the cutting edge of functional materials research.
The structure of the program - featuring both short training projects and an extended research project - provides multiple opportunities for direct contact with leading academics and industry partners across a wide range of research areas. You will choose your extended research project after exploring BCFN's research network through short projects and the teaching programme. Recent project titles have included ‘Tunable Fluorescent Carbon Dots for Digital Display Technologies', ‘Nanoscale Bi/Sb Chalcohalides for Solar Energy Conversion’ and ‘Silk-Bone: a New Spin on Bone-tissue Engineering’.

There is no direct entry onto the course but you can transfer from the other courses if you reach a high academic standard in your first two years.
The first two years provide a strong foundation in engineering, including mathematics, structures, soil and fluid mechanics, computing and surveying, as well as optional units. More optional units are introduced in subsequent years, allowing you to pursue your interests while developing key professional skills.

Design is central to the course and this is reflected in the projects you will undertake. In the first year you will develop a solution to an open-ended problem, such as designing and making a model bridge. This course is ideal for students interested in learning more about how to use numbers and data within geography. It provides training in practical and analytical skills, which will enhance your career prospects and provide you with a strong platform for postgraduate study. No prior knowledge of statistical techniques is required.
About two thirds of your studies will follow the single honours BSc Geography course, where you will acquire core knowledge in your subject. You will develop a wide range of geographical and scientific skills, gaining an advanced overview of both human and physical geography in year one, and choosing from a wide range of specialist units in years two and three.
The remaining third of your course will provide interdisciplinary training in quantitative methods. In year one of the quantitative pathway we discuss how numbers and data are used to tell convincing stories in the media and social research. We consider what is meant by segregation and how it can be mapped and measured. Year two offers practical classes in social statistics and applied data analysis, which will develop your skills in numeracy and analysis and enable you to undertake your own individual research project in an area of quantitative social science in year three.
