The Bachelor of Arts major in Italian with a Language and Literature emphasis offers an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on the study of the Italian language. In this program one of the largest Italian programs in the country students acquire a high level of proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Italian. In addition to the study of language, coursework covers the literary and artistic aspects of Italian culture and their contributions to the world; milestones and major events in Italian history; and modern Italian culture, current events and politics. Learning Outcomes

Take a deep dive into the human psyche of this program analyzes people's motivations, the role of power and the effects of change in historical and contemporary societies. The goal for the General Studies program with an emphasis in Social, Behavioral and Human Understanding is to provide students with a strong base for looking at the social systems of individuals and societies. This Bachelor of General Studies helps students examine multiple perspectives on social and cultural change, and teaches them to assess the strengths and weaknesses of conflicting points of view. Students not only develop an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, differences between individuals from various economic, political, religious, cultural, ethnic and social backgrounds, but they also learn to think clearly about complex problems and employ creative innovation when finding solutions.

Middle East and North African Studies employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning about all aspects of this region. The Bachelor of Arts focuses on instruction in the principal languages of the area (Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Hebrew) and includes coursework in religion, political science, history, literature, geography, sociology, archaeology, linguistics and architecture. Students seek degrees in this department out of a genuine interest in this part of the world, often on a professional path to government service, academics, a position in international business or as preparation for advanced study in this or other fields.

Learning Outcomes

• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to identify the major historical periods, figures, and movements that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa from 600 C.E. to the present.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to compare and contrast the various social, cultural, religious, geographic and linguistic milieus of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to critically evaluate popular, political and/or media discussions of the Middle East and North Africa.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to analyze and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources in order to develop and write a research paper.
• Students who earn a BA in MENAS will be able to achieve proficiency at the intermediate level in one of the languages of the Middle East and North Africa (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish). Communicative proficiency is defined in accordance with the Standards for foreign language learning as developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are further analyzed below: i. To communicate in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) languages, both orally and in writing, by engaging in interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational communication activities (Communication). ii. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the MENA cultures through language activities such as written essays and oral presentations on cultural topics (Culture). iii. To make meaningful cross-cultural comparisons between two or more of the MENA cultures (Comparisons).

Be the change you want to see in the world. This course of study looks at the environment from the critical perspectives of policy and social science. Environmental Studies sheds light on the human dimensions of environmental issues. The interdisciplinary nature of this Bachelor of Arts makes the study of geography critical to understanding key factors affecting the environment in today's world. Distinguished faculty members teach courses about water, land use, food, energy, the built environment and climate related to both urban and rural areas. Students explore techniques for addressing pressing social science issues, but they study physical science techniques as well. The University of Arizona awards more undergraduate degrees in geography than almost any other school in the country, and the School of Geography and Development is ranked as one of the top geography departments.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Music in Performance with an Oboe emphasis learn in a variety of settings: private lessons, weekly master classes, weekly reed labs, large ensembles, chamber music and guest-artists master classes. In addition to the Fred Fox School of Music's highly personalized instruction in a supportive learning environment, oboe students get access to the school's professional recording studio and reed workshop, where they can utilize reed-making tools, including top-quality gouging and shaping equipment. The school is home to two orchestras, two wind ensembles, the Pride of Arizona Marching Band and the University of Arizona Jazz Ensemble, among others.

Hone your craft as a violinist and build a solid foundation in music theory by majoring in Performance. The highly lauded Fred Fox School of Music offers violinists a chance to study among fellow student musicians, renowned faculty performers and esteemed music professionals. Students seeking their Bachelor of Music in Performance with a Violin emphasis also audition for placement to satisfy a conducted large-ensemble requirement. Orchestra ensembles include the Arizona Symphony and the Philharmonic. Mariachi Arizona is another ensemble option, immersing students in a rich musical heritage.
