If you see yourself in an educational leadership role outside of the traditional classroom, consider the Literacy, Learning and Leadership major. Communities are always in need of individuals who have expertise on how to make learning accessible for all. Graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Literacy, Learning and Leadership fill lead roles in a wide range of fields, including volunteer programming, nonprofit work, youth services, and community education and outreach. The undergraduate experience teaches students how to design traditional and digital instruction that turns complex ideas into understandable and accessible content and empowers individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in learning outside of the traditional school setting. Students also earn academic credit and gain valuable work experience through internships at a variety of local, national and international organizations.

Develop expert-level language proficiency in one of the largest and most influential global economies. In the Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies program, students select from one of two focuses in language or culture. The Chinese Language Intensive focus provides instruction on three levels, from beginning to advanced, plus specialized instruction in advanced reading, writing and conversation. Students learn to communicate effectively and read proficiently.  The department offers a summer study abroad program in Hangzhou, where students learn about China's dynamic Buddhist tea culture while staying in a monastery connected to the Hangzhou Buddhist Academy.

The Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and Human Development prepares students for careers and graduate training in a variety of fields, such as human services, social policy, community and public health, counseling, social work, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, gerontology, child/elder advocacy, criminal justice/law, and child life specialist professions. Students explore topics such as adolescence, child development, family relationships, mental health, counseling and youth programs in both traditional classroom settings and real-world situations. During the program, each student partners with faculty to acquire firsthand experience working with families and individuals in many contexts. Additionally, the program offers a network of community agencies that provide internships and hands-on learning to ensure that, upon graduation, students are well equipped to meet challenges head-on.

Develop an in-depth understanding of human nature to set the stage for life-changing and society-affecting innovations. Sociology studies the ways social structures and interactions shape human life. In this Bachelor of Arts major, students gain deep knowledge of society's origins, its functions and its problems, focusing on relations among people, groups, organizations and cultures. Graduates walk away adept at quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as with strong interview skills and sharply honed writing abilities. Many students use a Sociology major as the base for careers in law, health or social services, while others employ it as a launch pad for graduate work as a professional sociologist in research organizations or educational institutions.

The Bachelor of Science in Geography with a Geographic Information Science emphasis offers courses in cutting-edge GIS and geographic information systems technology (GIST) to fill the growing worldwide demand for skilled geospatial professionals. The program offers courses in remote sensing, cartography, spatial modeling, and the application of GIS for land assessment, wildlife conservation, transportation and the social sciences. Students also gain skills in mathematical and computational thinking, problem-solving, and oral and written communication. Students pursuing a Geography major with a GIS emphasis have access to courses that will help them become technologically proficient in GIS programming, project management, spatial data integration and management, and the production of spatial data visualizations for print, multimedia and mobile environments.

Follow in the footsteps of past and present feminist icons to become a leader in the movement toward gender equality across all fronts. Founded in 1975 and led by a renowned faculty, the Gender and Women's Studies department at the University of Arizona stands at the forefront of feminist research and curriculum. The Bachelor of Arts in Gender and Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary program that works to contest historical, ongoing and pervasive oppression based on gender, race, sexuality, class, ability and citizenship. Small class sizes encourage students to interact closely to learn the ways in which gender shapes society, culture, history, the economy and politics in the U.S. This approach to scholarship builds critical thinking, reading, writing and research skills. This B.A. relies heavily on both collaborative engagement and independent study, and students are encouraged to get involved in community organizations.

Food studies is a rapidly growing field in North America as the demand increases for experts in food-related policy, food justice and food culture. Students in this new Bachelor of Arts program (offered in collaboration with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) prepare to become change-makers in the world's food system through an interdisciplinary approach to examining food in all its dimensions: cultural, economic, health and environmental. Tucson is an ideal setting for food studies; it recently earned the coveted honor of a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and was the first city in the U.S. to gain the designation.

If a career in Spanish language translation or interpretation interests you, the University of Arizona has a specific Spanish major emphasis to train students at the undergraduate level. Spanish language translators and interpreters are in high demand across health care, legal, nonprofit and business settings. Students wishing to earn their Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a Translation and Interpretation emphasis gain Spanish language immersion while learning linguistics and translation and interpretation theory and practice. Dedicated to honing student talent, the faculty members are equally at home in the classroom, studio and on the stage. Along with individualized instruction and mentoring, performance faculty members regularly appear in solo recitals and as guest artists with major opera companies, symphony orchestras, chamber groups and other ensembles.
