The Nutrition Science Option provides students with a curriculum well-grounded in the basic sciences with the practical application of the principles of physiology and biochemistry to the science of nutrition. The program is designed to meet the requirements for application to professional schools such as medical, dental, physical therapy, and other paramedical programs. This option also prepares students for graduate study in nutrition and other health-related disciplines.

The BS in Chemistry provides a strong background in chemistry while allowing students to specialize in areas of interest. It is especially well suited for students leaning towards medical sciences while allowing more flexibility than that allowed in the American Chemical Society-approved biochemistry curriculum. The program allows for great versatility in the junior and senior years, allowing the curriculum to be tailored to individual goals. The curriculum prepares students for professional careers in chemistry or biochemistry and advanced degree programs in chemistry, biochemistry and medically related fields.

Our forestry program provides students with the knowledge to sustain and manage the diverse forest resources that make up local and regional landscapes.  For a hands-on introduction to field work,  students in the forestry program spend the summer between their second and third years at our summer practicum program held at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center outside Andalusia, Alabama.

The objectives of the forestry curriculum are to provide: 1) the fundamental knowledge regarding the resources that professional foresters typically manage and the multiple uses, sustaining, and conservation of those resources; 2) a general education integrating physical, social and biological sciences to prepare the forester for the role as steward of public and private forest resources; and 3) training and skills needed for initial forestry employment, as well as for advancement to higher levels of managerial responsibility. The forestry degree is appropriate for students who seek employment in any aspect of forest resource management, from forest industry lands where timber production is typically the primary objective, to private non-industrial properties where multiple-use predominates, to public lands where recreation or environmental protection is often paramount. The curriculum emphasizes biological, ecological, environmental, social, economic, and ethical considerations in forest management.

Emerging global issues, rapidly advancing technologies, and multi-cultural consumer behaviors impact success in the fast-paced, dynamic fashion industry. Career success requires understanding the fashion industry from beginning to end. The department of Consumer and Design Sciences Apparel faculty prepare graduates for a variety of fashion-related careers in the global supply chain. Creativity, innovation, critical thinking, technical competency, and communication effectiveness are valued skill sets. With the integrated core of apparel-related courses, coupled with the focus on the merchandising or design and production management, students will be prepared to work effectively as a team member in a variety of fashion-related settings.

The Apparel Design and Production Management (APDP) Option is structured around a core of courses providing knowledge about raw materials and manufactured products, design and product development, production technology, and marketing concepts. Designers and product developers must be creative, but must also understand that fashion begins and ends with the consumer.

This option is unique because of its strong emphasis on developing an understanding of consumer preferences and identifying market niches, in addition to focusing on product development, design and production management principles. Students learn to manage apparel products from the design concept through retail sales, creating tech packages as part of a team-based Apparel Line Development capstone course. Apparel Design and Production Management students intern with a domestic or international firm; with couture designers or in industry settings. Unique internships in theatrical costuming, or in museums with historical costume or textile collections are also possible.

Every day you interact with family, friends, authority figures, and strangers. Sociologists study the circumstances around this human behavior and social interaction, with a particular focus on groups, networks, social institutions, and social change.

Our Bachelor of Arts in sociology gives you an understanding of these social contexts and helps you develop skills in oral and written communication, critical thinking, and research. Because our faculty specialize in a wide range of fields, you’ll take courses on organizations, criminal and deviant behavior, social psychological processes, family life, legal institutions, medical systems, human population dynamics, and international development. You’ll have opportunities for internships and hands-on research experience.

Natural Resources Management is the management of both people and the environment to achieve society’s goals and sustain natural systems. The Natural Resources Management major prepares the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, ability, and excellence to conserve and manage our natural systems for a sustainable future. The degree is an innovative interdisciplinary combination of social and ecosystem sciences, structured to generate critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to address the many challenges of complex natural resources issues.

Today’s consumers want the news in every form—on their phone, in a podcast, through social media, on television. With a Bachelor of Arts in journalism, you’ll learn how to research and report news and information across all platforms, both digital and traditional. You can specialize in broadcast, community, digital technology, entrepreneurial/business, health and science, investigative, magazine, sports, or visual journalism. And you’ll receive additional hands-on practical experience when you work at the student newspaper, television station, radio station, magazine, or yearbook.

The study of philosophy is excellent preparation for graduate school, professional school, seminary, or any career in which clear thought and expression are valued. It helps you think critically and improves your writing ability – two skills employers rank as among the most important. Philosophy deepens our engagement with fundamental questions that arise in everyday life with regard to ourselves, others and the world around us. Our Bachelor of Arts in philosophy exposes you to the great philosophers and philosophies of the past and the present. You’ll become adept at criticizing the view of others and your own views.

The Department offers the Organismal Biology major leading to the Bachelor of Science degree.  The curricula for this major is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in biology as well as providing the opportunity for specialization. This program also provides a strong preparation for further study in graduate programs or in professional schools, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and other allied health fields.

The agricultural communications major combines the study of agricultural sciences, practices and policy with the study of communications media and methods. Professional communicators in agriculture are vital to relaying crucial scientific or technical information from scientists to producers to businesses to consumers. As an agricultural communicator, your career may be in mass media, advertising, public relations, sales and marketing or government.

What you’ll Study
As an agricultural communications major, you’ll take basic agriculture classes as well as chemistry and biology to ensure your understanding of agricultural issues. You’ll also take a variety of classes through the School of Communications and Journalism and the English Department, including public relations, marketing, journalism, radio, television, film, digital media and technical writing. The major requires an internship or journalism workshop.
