Overview

The Computer Systems Technology program is an accredited, three-year co-operative education, Ontario College Advanced Diploma program which provides comprehensive training for students wishing to work in the high demand areas of network, security, virtualization, data storage and management and systems operation and management.  This program provides the students the ability to be effective team leaders, think critically, solve problems and acquire new skills quickly.

Under the guidance of expert faculty, combined with the use of leading edge labs, the program emphasizes the design, implementation, configuration, monitoring, troubleshooting, management, as well as the hands-on installation of networking, security, VoIP, mobile devices, virtualization, data storage and management, server, workstation and operating systems technologies.

Instruction in project management, communication and interpersonal skills prepare the student to effectively interact with all levels of users in both oral and written mediums.

Upon completion of the program, and in addition to the highly valued Ontario College Advanced Diploma, graduates should have the knowledge and skills to take exams for the following certifications, if they choose to do so: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). Graduates may also choose to apply the knowledge gained to prepare and test for other industry certifications, such as those offered for Microsoft, Linux, VMWare and EMC2.

Professional Accounting is a three level program that enables students from any undergraduate discipline to complete a graduate certificate in Accounting.
Upon completion of the program, students will have completed all entry and technical courses of the Advanced Certificate in Accounting (ACAF) offered by CPA Canada.  Students will still need to complete four applied courses which are offered through Part-Time Studies at Fanshawe College. The ACAF program is the only standardized national education program in Canada for intermediate accounting positions.  Students that complete the program will also be eligible for some exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Courses will be enriched with hands-on integrated technology applications and case studies based on real-world scenarios. Further real-world industry exposure will be maximized with guest speakers and hands-on projects.  The program is designed to integrate all of the course topics and to develop students critical thinking skills, research skills, and decision-making skills.

The Social Service Worker (Fast Track) program provides an opportunity for university graduates (Psychology, Sociology or Social Work related) and community college Community Studies diploma graduates to complete the requirements for graduation from the Social Service Worker program in three levels (ten months). Graduates from the Social Service Worker program are eligible for admission to The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and must be members of this regulating body to use the professional title "Registered Social Service Worker".

Business - Payroll and Bookkeeping is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. The program provides graduates with knowledge of 1) payroll and human resources practices including compensation and benefits, and 2) bookkeeping practices and related accounting software applications. Graduates will have met the educational requirements for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation and will have three advanced standing credits towards completion of the Certified Payroll Manager designation with the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA). In addition, graduates will have also completed the academic requirements for the Certified Bookkeeper designation with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). Graduate Certificate in Addictions and Mental Health

The Addictions and Mental Health one-year program will be beneficial for seasoned practitioners who are committed to maintaining currency, and/or who are seeking career advancement. Students who are newly graduated from post-secondary may also wish to enroll in this program to deepen their knowledge and skill base prior to entering the workforce. Opportunities to work in varying sectors such as child, adult, family and gerontology-based programs may broaden for students who complete this Graduate Certificate. The intent of this program will be to ready students to work in a variety of Human Services settings such as community programs, residential care, social service programs, early childhood and family centres, recreation and leisure services, gerontology programs, group homes as well as any other settings that support prevention, intervention and treatment of addictions and/or mental health.

Fashion Design is a three year co-operative Ontario College Advanced Diploma program providing professional career-directed training in the development, production management and marketing of apparel design. Through classroom theory, lecture, lab work, field trips and work term experience, skills are applied. Networking with industry professionals promotes future employment opportunities. Emphasis is placed on design analysis, apparel manufacturing and technology, and design communications and marketing. Skills such as fashion illustration, computer-aided design, pattern-making and draping, and garment construction techniques are taught, and supported by studies of textile technology, historical research, manufacturing processes and applied computerized technology in the fashion industry. This three-year Advanced Diploma in Cyber Security will provide students with the foundational Information Security (InfoSec) skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the IT Security industry. Foundational topics will include information security, ethics, network management/analysis, programming and scripting, operating systems, and database management. Building on those foundational topics, the curriculum will also develop students’ skills in the areas of risk analysis, cryptography, vulnerability testing, access control implementation, and security audit performance. Graduates of this program will be able to proactively implement sound security practices to mitigate security risks and respond quickly to security breaches and issues that may have occurred.

Through hands-on laboratory activities, case study analyses, and research projects, students will enhance their Information Security understanding and develop their interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. The Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resources Management) program is a four-year, honours level degree with a mandatory co-op work term between Levels 7 and 8.  Students will study core fundamentals of business including business strategy, management, accounting, leadership and marketing in addition to the specialized human resources management courses, including performance management, human resources planning, talent acquisition, employee and labour relations and compensation and benefits administration. All nine CHRP course credits required for professional licensing bodies are included in this program.

The Fitness and Health Promotion program prepares graduates to perform the roles and responsibilities of a fitness consultant and personal trainer. Fanshawe College’s Fitness and Health Promotion Faculty team consists of highly educated industry specialists, with both knowledge and experience in exercise program design, exercise prescription, fitness and health assessment, behaviour change, fitness marketing and sales, business ownership, sports and universal nutrition, as well as individual and population-based health promotion.

This one-year Graduate Certificate program is designed to provide students with a holistic approach to information systems security as it applies to business.  The program will provide a broad understanding of security concepts and concentrate on industry best practices for information security.  Students will gain the knowledge required to manage both the strategic and operational aspects of information security.  The focus will be on addressing the following questions:

  • What business assets need protection?
  • What are the vulnerabilities and threats to the business and the assets?
  • What safeguards need to be implemented to protect the business?
  • Did the protection measures or safeguards work?

The students will develop the skills to identify vulnerabilities to business and implement effective safeguards to minimize risks to acceptable levels.  They will learn detailed practical aspects of security such as risk analysis, vulnerability testing, writing security policies, implementing access controls and performing security audits.  An emphasis will be placed on interpersonal, organizational, technical, communication and problem solving skills applied to enhance the effective implementation of security in a business environment.

Learning Outcomes:
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

  • Apply knowledge of computer operating systems, networking, and various application software to the simulation of business processes.
  • Develop best practices to protect business resources through the application of knowledge of vulnerabilities and exploits.
  • Develop security strategies for the deployment of security procedures and protective devices.
  • Integrate information technology strategies that support business functions by employing knowledge of best practices of business processes and systems.
  • Develop security plans and strategies to include acceptable use of business information and systems by internal employees, contractors, consultants, business partners and customers.
  • Develop security plans and strategies to ensure the integrity of information in compliance with best practices, relevant policies, standards, and regulations.
  • Apply project management principles in the deployment of security policies and strategies.
  • Perform security audits to ensure compliance with security plans, policies, standards, regulations and best practices.
  • Develop and deliver a corporate training program to communicate both orally and in writing the security requirements for compliance with security policies.
  • Prepare security documentation for approval by senior management and present results of security audits.

Diploma in Baking and Pastry Arts Management

Baking and Pastry Arts Management is a one-of-a-kind program that will prepare students for a career in baking and pastry arts, by combining baking with the fundamentals of cooking skills in order to meet the needs of todays employers and customers.

This two-year diploma program also assists students in developing skills to operate a successful business through the study of key theories in small business planning, management, marketing and sales. Graduates from this program will be able to seek a variety of different employment opportunities as a member of a culinary team in: restaurants, hotels, cruise lines, catering companies, bakeries and pastry shops.
