Overview

The Interactive Media Development - 3D Visualization Program at Fanshawe College is an intensive three-year advanced diploma focusing on the tools and techniques necessary to gain employment in the fields of visualization and emerging interactive technologies. The goal of the program is to provide students with the professional, technical and artistic skills necessary to create innovative visualizations, prototypes and info-graphics.

Students will develop 2 and 3 dimensional design skills by studying a curriculum focused initially on the core principles of visualization technologies and interactive media. Foundation courses including image and motion design, interactive production, project management, and visual communication will provide the basis for understanding sophisticated technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Throughout the second year, students will study more advanced concepts of visualization including 3D modeling, game engine simulations, visualization statistics, generative art and user experience design. In the third year, students will continue with advanced visualization studies with emphasis on an integrative capstone project (individual or group) or a client based applied research project internship.

An integral part of the 3D Visualization program at Fanshawe College is its relationship to the local community. London, ON has a vibrant and growing interactive media industry. Professionals from this community include business leaders and entrepreneurs, creative directors, interactive designers, programmers, game designers, and producers who will play an important role by providing mentorship to students through critique and guest lectures.

Fanshawe College's Law Clerk program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in legal principles combined with the practical law clerk training that students will need to enter the diverse, fast-paced, modern field of law. As a graduate of the Law Clerk program you will work as part of a team in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, legal technology providers, title insurance companies, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments or in any other capacity where a legal environment exists. This one-year graduate certificate program is designed for university and college graduates seeking a career in the operations management sector. This program will be completed in two levels and be delivered using both face-to-face (web-facilitated) and blended methods.

The program consists of four academic levels and eight months of co-op working in industry. The program prepares graduates for employment in areas such as numerically controlled machines programming, tool design, production planning, statistical process control, value engineering, advanced machining and maintenance engineering throughout the manufacturing industry. Modern numerically controlled CNC and CAD/CAM equipment is utilized in this program.

Other Information
Graduates of the two-year Manufacturing Engineering Technician (Co-op) Ontario College Diploma program may apply to Level 5 of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Co-op) program to complete the requirements for an Ontario College Advanced Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Students wishing to continue into the Manufacturing Engineering Technology (Co-op) program must complete an "Application for Program Transfer" form available from the Office of the Registrar, Room E1012.
This program will be delivered over two years, which includes four academic levels and two 4-month co-op terms.
A CONNECT lab fee of $50.00 per academic term is included in the Additional Program Fees stated in the Fee Schedule. This fee helps cover costs associated with the delivery of the CONNECT mobile computing program.   

Co-operative Education
In order to be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA and be academically complete at the commencement of their co-op work term.

Public Safety and Legal Studies

Certificate in Public Safety Fundamentals

The Public Safety Fundamentals (PSF) program is a one-year preparatory studies certificate program designed to provide opportunities for students to experience post-secondary public safety studies in a supportive environment. The program provides a pathway for those students interested in pursuing a career in the field of public safety, mature applicants returning to school, and applicants who are seeking further information prior to making a public safety program choice. The PSF program is delivered in two 15 week terms offering combined in-class, blended and online courses, and incorporating experiential learning.

The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to build a strong knowledge base in fundamental public safety skills relevant to, and in preparation for, their chosen public safety program. Skills in communication, human behaviour, law and ethics, physical fitness, sensitivity training and knowledge of specific public safety disciplines (e.g., Justice, Protection & Policing, Legal) will prepare the student for entry level employment in public safety related fields or for future studies in public safety career programs. This certificate programs focus is to instill an appreciation of the professional roles, responsibilities and academic requirements of public safety disciplines. In the program, students will develop skills and strategies they can use to master the challenges of post-secondary education and those found in the workplace. Students will also participate in self-assessments of aptitudes and skills, labour market assessments, job search techniques and strategies, and the writing of employment search correspondence and resumes. The concept of professional portfolios will be introduced.

In the first level of the program, given the foundational nature of the program, the curriculum will focus on fundamental skills in areas such as strategies for college success, communications, practical math, computer basics, human behaviour and ethics. In the second level of this program, students will be required to select and follow one of the School of Public Safety program streams such that the students second level studies aligns with their School of Public Safety (SoPS) diploma program goal.

The following program streams of study are available:
Justice, Protection and Policing: Designed for students interested in pursuing a justice, protection or policing career program in the School of Public Safety.
Legal: Designed for students interested in pursuing a legal career program in the School of Public Safety.
Fire: Designed for students interested in pursuing a career in fire sciences.
Students interested in pursuing a career in emergency telecommunications may choose either the Legal or Justice, Protection and Policing program stream for Level 2.
Students who successfully complete the program may receive additional consideration when applying for admission to public safety and other career programs.
Important Note: Students need to be aware that the preferred designated preparatory program for the Paramedic Program is the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program.

The Motive Power Technician (Automotive) Diploma program is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. The program is designed to develop graduates with essential advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the automotive service industry as well as providing progressive and comprehensive learning experiences on internal combustion spark ignition engines, power trains and related modern vehicle systems. Students will learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and to undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision.

Graduates may also be in a favourable status if they wish to apply for our alternative Motive Power Technician (Diesel) Diploma program. Credit for those courses that bridge our diploma programs will be granted; therefore, significantly reducing the requirements for this second Ontario College Diploma.

This three year Building Renovation Technology Advanced Diploma program will prepare students to plan, implement, and lead building and renovation projects and equip them with the skills to manage the technical and business operations related to a range of building projects in the residential and light commercial sectors of the construction industry.  The program will address the changes in Ontario Building Code, introduced in January 2017, which dramatically increased the requirement for buildings to be sustainable and highly energy efficient.

Co-operative Education
This three year program has two co-operative education work terms.  Students can choose to participate in a four-month paid co-op term from May to August between years one and two of academic study.  The second work term is eight months and takes place May to December following the completion of the second year of academic study.

This program blends theory with hands-on application of theoretical principles delivered through course work and field practicum.  Students in this program will develop their knowledge and professional skills in areas such as child development and best practices in early childhood; the early childhood educator's role and responsibilities; the importance of play in children's learning; family involvement and curriculum design and implementation.

When the student graduates they will have the knowledge and necessary skills to work with children, families and community in the context of early learning and development programs for children from birth to age twelve. The student will be prepared to work in a variety of settings, including child care centres, early learning and family centres, Best Start programs, before and after school programs and with school boards.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Create learning contexts to enable, build and maintain caring, responsive relationships in partnerships with children, families and communities that value and respect social, cultural and linguistic diversity including Indigenous peoples’ worldviews and Francophone identity;
  • Co-create, facilitate and reflect upon inquiry and play-based early years and child care programs and pedagogical approaches to support children’s learning, holistic development and well-being following children’s capabilities, interests, ideas and experiences;
  • Co-design and maintain inclusive early learning environments to value and support equitable, accessible and meaningful learning opportunities for all children, their families and communities in a range of early years and child care settings;
  • Collaborate with children, families, colleagues, agencies and community partners to create, maintain, evaluate and promote safe and healthy early learning environments to support independence, reasonable risk-taking and healthy development and well-being;
  • Use observation strategies to identify children’s strengths and challenges and to ascertain when children and families might benefit from additional support or community resources;
  • Use professional communication in interactions with children, families, colleagues, employers, the regulatory body, government authorities and children’s service agencies to meet legal and ethical standards of the early years sector;
  • Act in accordance with relevant legislation, regulations, College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, agency policies and procedures and principles of evidence-informed practice and reflect upon their impact on one’s own role in early years and child care settings;
  • Identify, report and document when a child is in a situation of perceived risk for, or actual neglect or abuse, in accordance with legislation, the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, policies and procedures;
  • Create and engage in partnerships with families, communities, colleagues, interdisciplinary professionals, authorities and child service agencies to advocate for quality early years and child care programs and services;
  • Engage in reflective practice and continuous professional learning in accordance with principles of lifelong learning, evidence-informed practices in the early years sector and requirements of the College of Early Childhood Educators.

The program provides students with the theoretical and practical training required to assist them in seeking employment as an Industrial Electrician Apprentice, Construction and Maintenance Electrician Apprentice, Network Cabling Specialist or Fire Alarm Technician.

Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Assist in the interpretation and preparation of electrical drawings including other related documents and graphics.
  • Analyze and solve simple technical problems related to basic electrical systems by applying mathematics and science principles.
  • Use and maintain test and instrumentation equipment.
  • Assemble basic electrical circuits and equipment to fulfill requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Assist in the installation and troubleshooting of basic electrical machines and associated control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Assist in testing and troubleshooting electrical and electronic circuits, equipment, and systems by using established procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Assist in the troubleshooting of control systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Use computer skills and tools to solve basic electrical related problems.
  • Assist in conducting quality assurance procedures under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of records and documentation systems.
  • Install and assist in testing telecommunication systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Apply health and safety standards and best practices to workplaces.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with relevant legislation, policies, procedures, standards, regulations, and ethical principles.
  • Apply basic electrical cabling requirements and install and test system grounding for a specified number of applications under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Identify problems and troubleshoot electrical systems under the supervision of a qualified person.
  • Assist in the selection of electrical equipment, systems and components to fulfill the requirements and specifications under the supervision of a qualified person.
