Overview

Interior designers focus on the planning, design and detailing of interior space to improve the quality of people's physical environment. The four-year Honours Bachelor of Interior Design program covers both commercial and residential design, providing comprehensive treatment of all facets of interior design including research, problem analysis, concept development, design communication, drawings and specifications, technology, verbal and visual presentation methods, construction, and business practice. The courses develop students' skills as creative designers who can formulate, propose and execute creative design solutions for the physical, social and psychological needs of a changing society. Principles of environmental sustainability and socially responsible design are embedded throughout the courses.

The Honours Bachelor of Environmental Design and Planning offers integrated learning based on the theory and practice of landscape architecture, planning and urban design. The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for contextual analysis and evaluation and computer-aided design for visualization is emphasized and taught. The program has artistic and scientific appeal. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental design and planning complemented by advanced technical design and communication skills. They use those skills and associated knowledge to creatively and effectively explore, analyze, conceptualize and present design and planning problems, opportunities, ideas and solutions. Sustainability is a principle for action - a comprehensive design and planning goal related to ecological, economic, socio-cultural and aesthetic dimensions of a place. It is advocated and upheld through applied project and community-based learning.

Academic projects, four work terms and a compulsory co-op placement give students the chance to apply their integrated learning and gain valuable practical experience. An academic exchange through a university in Curitiba, Brazil is available to senior students. Graduates are ready and able to work professionally in both the private and public sectors on contemporary design and planning projects requiring interdisciplinary solutions. Alternatively, an Honours Bachelor of Environmental Design and Planning Degree qualifies students for graduate studies in allied fields such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, planning, geographic information systems/science and geodesign.

The Interactive Media Development - 3D Visualization Program at Fanshawe College is an intensive three-year advanced diploma focusing on the tools and techniques necessary to gain employment in the fields of visualization and emerging interactive technologies. The goal of the program is to provide students with the professional, technical and artistic skills necessary to create innovative visualizations, prototypes and info-graphics.

Students will develop 2 and 3 dimensional design skills by studying a curriculum focused initially on the core principles of visualization technologies and interactive media. Foundation courses including image and motion design, interactive production, project management, and visual communication will provide the basis for understanding sophisticated technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Throughout the second year, students will study more advanced concepts of visualization including 3D modeling, game engine simulations, visualization statistics, generative art and user experience design. In the third year, students will continue with advanced visualization studies with emphasis on an integrative capstone project (individual or group) or a client based applied research project internship.

An integral part of the 3D Visualization program at Fanshawe College is its relationship to the local community. London, ON has a vibrant and growing interactive media industry. Professionals from this community include business leaders and entrepreneurs, creative directors, interactive designers, programmers, game designers, and producers who will play an important role by providing mentorship to students through critique and guest lectures.

Graduates of this program will find entry-level positions in the visualization industry as interactive designers and programmers, 3D specialists, prototype and visualization designers.

Fine Art Foundation is a one-year certificate program designed to give a broad base of experience and knowledge in the visual arts.  This foundation year introduces students to the fundamentals of art and design: practical skills, critical thinking and visual vocabulary.  Studies in this program include painting, drawing, video, sculpture, photography and art history.  Through studio based projects students will develop a portfolio of work in a range of media.  This program prepares students for the Advanced Diploma program in Fine Art at Fanshawe College, or advanced arts programs at other institutions, as well as prepares students who are seeking entry-level employment opportunities requiring fundamental visual arts skills.

Business - Finance (Co-op) is a two-year Ontario College Diploma program. This program is designed to develop the skills needed to work in the growing personal financial services sector, from customer service to wealth management and financial planning. Students will learn to work with clients, evaluating their needs and offer advice on personal financial management, tax and retirement planning, insurance, investments, and estate planning, as well as customer relations and providing product to clients. Qualified graduates will have completed all the educational requirements leading to the CFP® (Certified Financial Planner®) designation awarded by the Financial Planning Standards Council www.fpsc.ca. and the Registered Retirement Consultant® RRC® designation awarded by CIFP.

Students are also prepared to write the Canadian Securities Course® and Life Licensing Qualification Program examinations as prerequisites to securities and life insurance licensing. Students will also have completed the Mutual Funds Licensing course.

Co-operative Education
In order to be eligible for co-op, students must maintain a 2.5 GPA and be academically complete at the commencement of their co-op work term.
