Experiential Learning
The program features a workplace applied project in the second semester. Museum Management and Curatorship is an intensive, fast-paced, immersion experience that provides applied training for careers in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors. Approximately 75% of classes are held at the Peterborough Museum & Archives.

The third and final semester of the Museum Management and Curatorship program is a challenging, full-time, four-month internship during the spring and summer. This unpaid, curriculum-based internship will give you hands-on work experience where you will put all your hard work and studies into motion. Students should be prepared to relocate for the internship, to pay full tuition, and be self-supporting. You will negotiate your own internship with faculty assistance. Some students have gone abroad for the internship, for example, to Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. This Carpentry and Renovation Techniques program offers hands-on training in a variety of construction-related trades, with a focus on carpentry.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

In the 2-semester Carpentry and Renovation Techniques program you will be trained in carpentry/framing techniques, hand and power tool usage, blueprint reading, electricity basics, plumbing basics, welding, computer drafting and applied construction mathematics. The focus is on carpentry, as well as on trade-related health and safety measures. You will also learn about the regulations required to work in construction.
The ability to practice professional conduct on-site, and communicate and work effectively in a team environment will be key to your success. You will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate these skills throughout the program.
After successfully completing semester two, you will have earned the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques Ontario College Certificate and have an opportunity to test for level one for the General Carpentry Apprenticeship.
The Carpentry and Renovation Techniques program opens up a number of options to you. You could:

• Pursue an apprenticeship in carpentry

TRADES FUNDAMENTALS PROGRAM OPTIONS
Upon successful completion of this Ontario College Certificate, you will have earned credit for first semester of the following programs, and can pathway into semester two of these Fleming College programs:

You will also have earned some transfer credits, reducing your program workload, if you choose to enter our Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning or Electrical Techniques program.

Social Service Workers build and maintain relationships with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities; recognize and respond to individual, group, organizational and community injustices and inequalities; and provide direct services and/or a bridging to resources to improve the quality of peoples’ lives at the personal, cultural, and system levels. Social Service Workers provide these services in a range of residential and community settings while working with other professionals such as child and youth workers, addiction counsellors, teachers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and doctors.

The program is four semesters in length with classroom-based courses in the first three semesters and a block placement in the final semester. Applied learning activities are infused into our classroom-based courses such as:

• Practicing interviewing and group facilitation skills for the purposes of engagement, assessment, goal planning and social support with individuals, groups, organizations, and communities;
• Working in teams to plan on and off-campus events, fundraising campaigns, educational awareness days, and promotion of social change;
• Conducting research to challenge forms of oppression as well as to design/develop/improve social service programs; and
• Participating in self-care strategies for personal and professional well-being.

Building on the above knowledge and skills gained, a full-time placement in the fourth and final semester of the program provides a range of practice opportunities in a work setting (agency and location to be determined in consultation with the student, faculty, and available agency sites).

• Winter intake, first semester students take second semester in the spring, third semester in the fall, and fourth semester in the winter. • Individuals receiving funding that is dependent on attending classes continuously without semester breaks would start in the Winter or Spring semesters.

WORK EXPERIENCE
The fourth and final semester integrates learning in the form of a full-time placement and takes place in a work setting matching your learning needs and choice of location with consultation between the student, faculty, and available agency sites. Please be aware that 30 hours of volunteer service within an agency is required between entry into the SSW program and prior to entry into the fourth semester for placement and students must have successfully completed all first, second, and third semester courses prior to entry into fourth semester.

Specific agencies may have requirements such as proof of a current Emergency First Aid certification, CPR certification (Level C), a university degree, or additional immunizations. Also, some agencies may have required in-service training that the student must take prior to placement.

The Customs Border Services program will prepare you for a career on the front line of global trade and law enforcement.

The scope of border operations continues to expand as our economy becomes increasingly tied to the global marketplace. As cross border trade exceeds well over one billion dollars a day, our "smart border" needs to efficiently manage the flow of legitimate trade and travellers as we move toward an environment in which the exchange and use of electronic data between countries, and within Canada, becomes a permanent reality. The result is the continued growth of challenging new career opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) uses its front line law enforcement employees, Border Services Officers (BSOs), to fulfill its roles and responsibilities. The BSOs are trained to function as both a Customs and an Immigration official, depending upon the needs of the port of entry where they are employed. As Canada’s first line of defence, they are also trained and equipped to protect themselves and to ensure our overall safety and well-being.

The Customs Border Services program provides experiential, hands-on learning with real life enforcement tools such as a baggage x-ray machine, travellers’ baggage and a practice automobile, to help prepare you for common enforcement-related activities in the field with the CBSA. This training is also beneficial for the non-enforcement jobs found in the brokerage, consulting, transportation and private (import/export) industries. Throughout this program you will:

We have a lot to learn from the experiences and events of people who have gone before us. However, we can't learn much from the past if we don't have records of it. Imagine how much history is lost to us when an ancient artifact is destroyed by perfectly well-meaning people who want to save it.

This two-year Ontario College graduate certificate is an intensive, fast-paced learning experience that you will undertake in four consecutive semesters. You'll start your classes in September and spend your first three semesters, during the fall, winter and summer, at the college.
