Our program will complement your creative and technical expertise with essential business training in how to run your own enterprise and manage your own projects. You will learn how to understand specifications and how to communicate design ideas effectively to a real client. Round out your interior decorating education with instruction in mechanical, electrical, plumbing services and building methods including residential finishes, computer drafting, sketching interiors and digital communications.

The interior decorating program offers an optional work placement to all students who choose to enrol in this opportunity. The work placement requirement is a minimum of 240 hours, following Semester 2. Students who enrol in January have a slightly modified option to gain the mandatory hours.

Interior decorators work with clients and consult on programming through to installation phases. Components selection encompasses style, colour schemes, space plan layouts, elevations perspective sketches, lighting, furniture, floor finishes, wall finishes, kitchen and bathroom design, accessories, and many more details. Interior decorators can provide conceptual sketches, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), generated working drawings, and other design-related essentials to their clients including product specification, as well as cost estimates. Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Fashion is an international business, and Humber’s Fashion Arts and Business diploma program places an emphasis on retail operations from both domestic and international perspectives. You will study marketing, store planning and merchandising, brand management, marketing, social media, event planning, and retail buying. You’ll also learn fashion trend forecasting, sales techniques, and colour and styling analysis while attaining basic knowledge of fashion products and fashion promotion. These skills are then applied to product launches, planning merchandise assortments, styling fashion shoots and the production of fashion events.

Humber’s Landscape Technician diploma program is based on the principles of sustainability, conservation and environmental sensitivity. You’ll learn about landscape design and development, site construction, general horticulture, grounds maintenance, and related technologies through a combination of in-class studies and hands-on landscape training.

At Humber, we have exceptional facilities for landscape education. The Humber Arboretum, for example, is a 250-acre botanical garden centred on the west branch of the Humber River, surrounding Humber’s North Campus. It includes ornamental, woodland and wildlife gardens serving as a unique living classroom for plant studies, construction, arboricultural and horticultural skills. Our construction lab is housed in a weather-protected 8,000-square-foot facility which allows you to build full-scale structures such as decks, gazebos and retaining walls. Certificate of Culinary Skills

From the business side of hospitality, to à la carte cuisine, Humber’s Culinary Skills certificate program prepares you for a career as a professional chef. Gain theoretical and practical skills while learning in cutting-edge labs and real-world settings with the latest kitchen technology and equipment.

Many graduates of this one-year program continue on for another year and complete the Culinary Management diploma program or enter our Cook Apprenticeship program.

Students also have the opportunity to experience preparing meals on the Humber Food Truck, Humber’s classroom on wheels. A fast-track program is implemented for the January start. The first semester (January to April) is immediately followed by the second semester (May to August).

The curriculum for this program is similar to the first year of the Culinary Management program. This allows students to transition into the Culinary Management program after the first semester or at the end of the second semester with bridging courses. Alternatively, students are able to move into the Cook Apprenticeship program providing they have an eligible employer.

The Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning Ontario Graduate Certificate was developed to fill the need for a growing and in-demand skillset. Designed for students with experience in computer programming, software development or computer science, students learn the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to apply AI models and ML algorithms to a broad range of practical applications including natural language processing, image processing, computer vision and for business decision making. Work completed individually and in teams will simulate the real-world work environment and hone collaborative and teamwork skills. You will create commercial websites that apply theories of user-centered design, security, information architecture, quality assurance testing and responsive design. This program will help you master the project management and presentation skills that are key to success in the workplace.

You will be working on websites that meet strict business and development requirements. By the end of your final semester of study, you will have developed a comprehensive personal portfolio of your competencies, and you will be able to promote your skills at a portfolio show.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Explain the types of business transactions conducted on a commercial website and the process for development of such transactions.
  • Prepare and present a proposal and a business plan for a commercial website.
  • Implement a website solution based on a set of business requirements or client specifications.
  • Create a complete content management system using a database and scripting language.
  • Develop data-driven websites for multiple platforms in accordance with best practices, industry standards in content management, security, database design, interface design, usability, accessibility and personalization.
  • Design and develop web services for a website using software programs.
  • Design a full featured functioning commercial website using software programs, including a defined information architecture that is supported by navigation, layout, text and graphics.
  • Manage web development projects using project management practices, documentation and software.
  • Test, troubleshoot and debug software created in the web projects.
  • Develop web projects as a leader or member of a web development team.

Work Placement

  • Students will participate in a mandatory work placement which follows the last semester of study.
