Humber’s Fitness and Health Promotion diploma program places you at the leading edge of the healthy revolution as you learn from expert, industry-connected faculty. Skills learned go far beyond the fundamentals of exercise to include anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, business administration and marketing, nutrition, injury management, special event planning, and more.

You will combine classroom theory with hands-on training and real-world experience in our unique Humber Centre for Healthy Living for a comprehensive foundation in fitness that includes working with personal training clients and preparing to earn nationally and internationally recognized certifications. You will apply what you have learned by participating in one of the program’s annual special events promoting healthy living, organized and executed by students. Please note that certain courses in the Fitness and Health Promotion program require students to participate in fitness classes that will involve physical activity, which may at times be vigorous. Work Placement

• You will get hands-on experience as a fitness professional through two unpaid work placements, one per semester in your second year of study.
• Your first work placement takes place on campus where you will perform fitness appraisals and conduct weekly personal training sessions for an assigned client as part of the Humber Centre for Healthy Living (CHL). Along with personal training, students also provide fitness and exercise tips as content for the Humber CHL website.
• Your second work placement takes place off campus, two days per week for 14 weeks (196 hours total) at a fitness facility in a municipal, commercial, private or corporate setting.

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering – The Built Environment discipline gives you hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. In upper years students choose from focused study in either sustainable building or built environment information systems. They solve real industry and community problems and gain knowledge and skills in civil, architectural, structural, and environmental engineering. These abilities are in high demand as industry explores the use of innovative and resilient technologies and processes to make the construction of buildings and communities safer, more efficient and sustainable.     

Students use digital design applications and data capture technologies such as 3D scanning and mapping to integrate new and sustainable elements of the built environment into existing buildings, communities and cities. Virtual and augmented reality complement a design thinking approach to solving real world problems. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.

Fashion is an international business, and Humber’s Fashion Arts and Business diploma program places an emphasis on retail operations from both domestic and international perspectives. You will study marketing, store planning and merchandising, brand management, marketing, social media, event planning, and retail buying. You’ll also learn fashion trend forecasting, sales techniques, and colour and styling analysis while attaining basic knowledge of fashion products and fashion promotion. These skills are then applied to product launches, planning merchandise assortments, styling fashion shoots and the production of fashion events.

Our advisory committee provides regular review and input of curriculum ensuring our program is always on the cutting edge of industry developments.

In first year, courses in the business of fashion – marketing strategies, product knowledge, trend forecasting and web merchandising – give students an overview of this multibillion-dollar industry. In second year, students build on the skills developed on the foundation with wholesale sales, retail buying and operation, photo styling and event planning and budgeting.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Differentiate the purposes and functions of and the relationships between various elements within the structure of the fashion industry in order to identify business opportunities, challenges and solutions.
• Define and use correctly the terminology and language of fashion from a business and art perspective in order to communicate effectively with the range of stakeholders in the fashion industry.
• Identify artistic and business trends in order to capitalize on emerging opportunities throughout the stages of product development, manufacturing, distribution and promotion.
• Respond to current market conditions based on detailed analysis of company and/or industry reports.
• Design promotional materials and events using current digital technologies and styling methodologies in order to advance fashion arts and business objectives.
• Employ professional practices which support current business strategies and plans adhering to legal, ethical and sustainable standards appropriate to the fashion industry.
• Create a variety of strategic planning deliverables for achieving measurable goals for fashion merchandising, marketing, operations, finance and sales.
• Conduct vendor negotiations, budgeting, critical path analysis, communications and operations for effective fashion-related promotional events.

Humber’s Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner advanced diploma program is the first and only publicly funded program of its kind offered at a postsecondary institution in Canada. This intensive program is grounded in the TCM Practitioner skillset which has been approved by all provincial TCM regulators in Canada and provides students with the skills and professional experience necessary to become a TCM Practitioner in Ontario. Through a combination of theoretical course-based instruction, as well as several clinical placements, you will gain a necessary understanding of Traditional Chinese and Western medicine practices. Moreover, graduates of the TCM Practitioner program will be trained to conduct a TCM diagnosis and develop appropriate treatment plans by utilizing their skills in acupuncture, herbal medicine, clinical practice management, professionalism and safety. This program is also committed to the promotion of evidence-informed practice of TCM through scientific research.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Critically analyze and evaluate Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) theories and treatment methods to develop professional knowledge and skills required for the profession.
• Assess, diagnose and treat patients using Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) principles, knowledge and treatment methods including acupuncture, herbal medicine, internal and external medicine.
• Perform safe, ethical and effective TCMP skills within a clinical setting.
• Evaluate patients incorporating a bio-medical approach with Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner (TCMP) examination techniques to formulate a TCMP diagnosis and treatment strategy, and perform the treatment in a skillful and professional manner.
• Communicate effectively and educate patients, families, the community and other healthcare providers when providing TCMP practices.
• Advocate for Traditional Chinese Medicine as an effective complementary medicine.
• Adhere to the relevant provincial and federal legislation governing the profession while engaging in safe practices.
• Access current and pertinent research regarding practitioner self-care to maintain a healthy practice.
• Maintain client and business records using professional business practices of a TCMP.
• Establish interprofessional relationships with TCM colleagues and healthcare team members.

Work Placement

• There are seven mandatory clinical placements that provide students with progressive, professional practice experience in diagnosing, preparing treatment plans, inter-professional collaboration and safe practices. Clinical placements occur throughout the year at community TCM and multi-discipline clinics within the greater Toronto area, as well as at our on-site partner clinic, the Tzu Chi Clinic of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The clinical component of the program offers more than 800 hours of direct patient contact, which exceeds the regulatory body minimum requirement of 500 hours.

In Humber’s Film and Television Production (FMTV) advanced diploma program, you will gain hands-on experience with production and digital cinematography equipment from your first days at school. Industry experts will train you in the skills required for success in the film industry. Find your niche and develop team-building and collaboration skills by working in specialized roles on commercials, documentaries and short films. A wide variety of filmmaking, editing and cinematography courses will help you achieve well-rounded capabilities and create head-turning work.

In our FMTV program you will:

• Fine tune film and TV production abilities using industry-standard production equipment in large, well-equipped studios and state-of-the-art video and audio editing suites
• Gain valuable experience in every aspect of production including script writing, lighting, direction, shooting, post-production, distribution and exhibition
• Complete your education with training in business and marketing, opportunities to connect with industry professionals, and a final-semester work placement
• Premiere your work at high-profile program showcase screenings
• Student films produced in FMTV are regularly selected for a number of leading film festivals including TIFF Top Ten, Hot Docs, Montreal World Film Festival and Air Canada EnRoute.

Work Placement
The program features a work placement that runs from four to eight weeks. Instructors work with students to find a suitable placement, enabling them to hone their skill sets in a professional environment. Toronto and southern Ontario are home to numerous television and film production, post-production, lighting and sound companies. Humber has strong relationships with these firms, with many having worked with students before, giving you an advantage when applying for your placement.

Humber’s User Experience (UX) Design graduate certificate simulates the interdisciplinary approaches needed to achieve an innovation process with a focus on design desirability, technological feasibility and business viability. In two semesters, you will be prepared to innovate by problem finding through design research, problem understanding through synthesis, and problem solving through design and prototyping experiences. You will learn how to create valuable courses of action by generating design problem hypotheses, structured design process plans, compelling UX deliverables and persuasive arguments.

You will learn human-centered design methods and rhetoric that ground your design in the needs of the public. In addition, you will learn how to use interaction design and design systems through industry-standard quality assurance methods, and how to design and implement user interfaces to follow corporate strategies. A variety of conceptual and practical work will help you develop effective UX design skills.

As a user experience designer, you will employ the work-practice of prototyping concepts in order to describe ways to integrate digital services with material products and environments. As a UX researcher, you will discover insights through usability testing and apply them to create value for corporate clients and their customers. Toward the conclusion of this program, you will convert your acquired skills and achievements into a portfolio of design products that will help you launch a career as a UX design professional. This program fosters the practical discipline, relevance and currency essential in the contemporary, ever-growing UX job market.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Facilitate team processes towards effective completion of user experience design projects.
• Represent a linked sequence of observed evidence, collected data, qualitative research findings, interpretations and proposed design solutions to stakeholders to solicit support and commitment.
• Assess requirements of a user experience design project, in order to increase corporate acceptance, usability and effectiveness.
• Present persuasive arguments in support of user experience projects which balance user needs with business objectives.

The graduates from the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program are 5G ready. The 5G communications platform will support future innovations in the area of the Internet of Things, augumented reality, industrial automation and automated vehicles including drones. Our graduates build and maintain the infrastructure of communication systems. They learn what it takes to be successful in the communications industry. The wireless program focuses on three main outcomes: RF and Optical test and measurement, IP addressing and networking, and troubleshooting of a number of wireless protocols and systems. 

Our graduates understand the engineering tools and equipment for the testing of systems including drive test tools, RF and Optical test equipment, protocol analyzers, and virtualization and virtualized tools. Students will have access to learn on some of the best and latest equipment available. The curriculum is kept current with the collaboration of our industry partners in the wireless field. Students utilize the latest technologies and small classes taught by experienced faculty and industry leaders.

The Canadian wireless industry supports over 280,000 jobs with sector salary above the Canadian average. In addition, the international wireless telecommunications market is growing. There are numerous employment opportunities in the planning, developing, manufacturing, co-ordinating, implementing, maintaining and managing of telecommunications systems for businesses and government. As the rate of technology adoption increases in Canadian industry, the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program is preparing graduates for these new markets. A 2015 - 2019 labour market report by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) indicates that by 2019, over 182,000 critical ICT positions will be left unfilled.

Graduates of the program work at cell phone service providers, equipment manufacturers, in-house information technology (IT) departments, sales departments, and specialized telecommunication and networking companies.

Humber’s Business Administration – Accounting advanced diploma program covers a number of areas including accounting theory, procedures and best practices. Detailed instruction is provided in bookkeeping, auditing, taxation, business law, information systems, finance and management. You’ll gain hands-on experience in industry-standard software such as Profile (personal and corporate tax), Access, Excel, SAGE 50 Accounting (formerly known as Simply Accounting) and Accpac Plus in our Accounting Centre. Learn the inner workings of the accounting field from expert faculty who will teach you key concepts in accounting and taxation related to buying, selling, financing and investing transactions.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Systems navigators assist with navigating complicated and interrelated systems and are the primary source of communication between the inter-disciplinary team and individuals, acting as an advocate and guide.

You will acquire skills to assess diverse clients’ service priorities and to develop personalized care plans. Building on your current professional knowledge and practice, you will learn about the complex systems in which support services are provided to patients and clients. In addition, you will learn the business and economics of service delivery systems and how professionals’ roles and responsibilities intersect.

This program will prepare you for an exciting career in the emerging field of systems navigation. Graduates will be prepared to work across various health and community service systems and will also have the skills to take on client leadership roles specific to seamless service delivery for patients and clients, often acting as the single point of contact. Career opportunities exist in the fields of nursing, occupational/physical therapy, social services, mental health and addictions, and child and youth care.
