Overview

In Humber's Media Foundation certificate program, you will develop foundational knowledge and skills in digital media, communications, writing, and design, as preparation for further study in advanced media programs in Humber's Faculty of Media & Creative Arts. Your media training and in-studio work on media arts will thoroughly ground you in foundational theory, and you will use up-to-date, industry-standard software to create various media content. 

This program is designed with input from industry partners, and is taught by faculty with strong industry connections and experience who can give you valuable insights into the trends and realities of the media industry. In the first semester, you will develop strong skills for successful postsecondary learning while you are introduced to film studies, photography, communications and digital design. In your second and final semester, you will consolidate your general theoretical knowledge and practical skills in Visual Literacy and will build an area of focus by choosing four electives from Video Production, Script Writing, Audio and Video Editing, Television Studio Production, Media Communications, Image Capture, and Design for Media.

Designed for students who are new to postsecondary education and media, this two semester program will give you a broad understanding of what it is like to work in different sectors of the media industry, and will help you to develop a career focus in preparation for future learning and success in the workplace.

Humber’s Recreation and Leisure Services diploma program provides you with skills needed to start your career in government, not-for-profit and commercial recreation organizations. You will learn about recreation programming, special event management, staff management, facility operations, marketing and other services within the industry.

The curriculum is designed with industry collaboration, ensuring it is current and relevant. Within the program, students use ActiveNet software and PerfectMind, the most widely used registration management software in the recreation industry.

Students apply their skills by planning and implementing events for local community and charity organizations. A three-day leadership camp at the Ontario Educational Leadership Centre helps build communication and leadership skills while guest speakers, practical training and field trips provide added benefits in preparing you for the workplace.

Learning from professors, as well as managers and directors of recreation programs, centres and agencies will give you valuable exposure to the industry and training in current issues.

Work Placement

  • Qualified students will complete a work placement in Semester 4 – three days per week for 15 weeks (total of 250 hours). Humber’s Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) diploma program was the first in Ontario to provide formal educational preparation for occupational therapist assistants (OTAs) and physiotherapist assistants (PTAs) and continues to provide quality education. You will learn to assist in the implementation of rehabilitation treatment plans and programs developed to promote clients’ independence, activities and function. Areas of focus include restoring and maximizing physical function and occupational performance, ultimately enabling clients to effectively utilize their abilities in movement, daily functioning and activity while promoting overall well-being.

Practise your skills and acquire hands-on experience during over 600 hours (16 weeks) of unpaid work placements. These placements are arranged by the program fieldwork placement advisor during Semester 2, Semester 3 and Semester 4. You will have the opportunity to be exposed to leading-edge therapeutic skills, equipment and health-care facilities. This program offers the privilege of participating in clinical placements in occupational therapy and physiotherapy at some of the top teaching hospitals in Canada.

There are many reasons why a person may require occupational therapy and/or physiotherapy rehabilitation services. In addition to health and wellness promotion, individuals may require assistance returning to their activities of daily living and regular work due to falls, motor vehicle accidents,  sports injuries, spinal cord injuries, stroke, mental health conditions and chronic illnesses such as cystic fibrosis and diabetes. The interior decorating program offers an optional work placement to all students who choose to enrol in this opportunity. The work placement requirement is a minimum of 240 hours, following Semester 2. Students who enrol in January have a slightly modified option to gain the mandatory hours.

Interior decorators work with clients and consult on programming through to installation phases. Components selection encompasses style, colour schemes, space plan layouts, elevations perspective sketches, lighting, furniture, floor finishes, wall finishes, kitchen and bathroom design, accessories, and many more details. Interior decorators can provide conceptual sketches, computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), generated working drawings, and other design-related essentials to their clients including product specification, as well as cost estimates. Decorators can also choose from other career avenues including window display, event planning, décor magazines, television work, home staging and much more. Humber graduates have gone on to become interior decorating magazine editors-in-chief, featured magazine interior decorators, TV personalities with their own show, guest TV decorators, newspaper feature article leaders, interior decorating business owners, event planners, managers of decorating retail stores, design consultants and buyers to name but a few.

Humber’s Practical Nursing diploma program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a registered practical nurse (RPN). You will develop, practise and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences. Humber is a leading-edge facility in every respect. This program has been awarded the highest rating for accreditation - a testament to its excellence. Practice and learn in our bioscience and health science laboratories – including clinical simulation labs that provide hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Continuous placement in a range of clinical settings enhances your ability to apply in-classroom education to real-life situations.

You will participate in a total of 1,035 hours of unpaid clinical placements over the course of the program which take place over each semester and give you valuable hands-on experience. The school arranges and communicates with all placements. Throughout the first year of the program, you will participate in a unique community-service learning placement in a variety of community settings. In Semester 2, you will work in a long-term care setting, while Semester 3 takes place in rehabilitation, complex or acute-care settings. In Semester 2 and 3, you will also participate in clinical simulation and/or Stilwell (a virtual learning community designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood). In Semester 4, you will complete a preceptored (one-on-one placement alongside a registered practical nurse) pre-graduate clinical practice.

Humber’s Broadcasting - Radio diploma program is designed to prepare you for the performative, creative, technical and business aspects of the radio and audio world. You will learn about radio station operations, broadcast and production equipment, and the fundamentals of gathering, writing, producing, and delivering content for all genres of radio and podcasting. You will also gain in-demand skills in station management, sales, marketing, news, programming and market research.

Your studies will combine practical and theoretical aspects of radio broadcasting including effective speaking skills that can be applied to announcing, and news and sports delivery. You will also be trained in writing and producing for radio using industry software and audio equipment - to fully prepare you for a variety of careers in radio.

Students in our program contribute to 96.9 FM Radio Humber, our fully licensed campus and community radio station, regulated by the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Humber’s Cloud Computing Ontario Graduate Certificate provides you with the knowledge, skills and practices to become integral parts of cloud development and delivery in a variety of industrial settings. Utilizing a case methodology approach, students are exposed to everyday business challenges in order to develop experience in areas such as containerization, virtualization, data storage and security, and automation.
