Our curriculum gets you up to speed on the essential aspects of business including marketing, e-commerce, accounting, business writing and communications. In the first year, you will be introduced to an overview of fundamental business disciplines including the mathematics of finance, PC essentials, marketing, microeconomics, business law, services marketing and the principles of management. In the second year, the focus includes business computer applications, accounting, e-commerce, human resources administration, operations management, business finance, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Work Placement

In Semester 4, you will be assisted in finding a paid or unpaid business work placement, where you will practice your skills during an 84-hour assignment. This adds valuable hands-on experience to your resumé and provides excellent networking opportunities.

Humber’s advanced diploma program in Electronics Engineering Technology consistently ranks among our most employable programs. This program builds on skills learned in the Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program and will prepare you to work in all fields where electric circuits and systems are found. You will acquire strong fundamental knowledge to help you build a career in all new and emerging technologies manufactured here in North America like photonics, laser technology, medical imaging, new electronic materials and devices, intelligent systems, entertainment, and broadcasting systems. The program takes a system design and integration approach to electronic applications, and you will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in:

• Electronic circuits: analog, digital, radio-frequency and programmable circuits
• Connectivity and interface design, embedded microcontrollers, IoT integration
• The full skill set of computer networking including wireless networks
• Wireless telecommunications, antennas, waveguides and transmission lines
• Telecommunication electronics such as photonics, fibre optics and microwaves
• Signal acquisition and signal processing
• Image processing including high-definition television (HDTV) and medical imaging
• Control systems both embedded and computer-based
• Instrumentation used in industrial, scientific and medical applications

We have designed the curriculum in collaboration with an advisory panel comprising highly successful industry experts in order to ensure you are learning the most up-to-date, relevant material. You will spend approximately half your time in labs working with electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits and learning how to embed these circuits into cell phones, audio equipment, high-definition (HD) video systems, robots, computers and advanced instruments.

This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession. For students who are accepted into the program, three co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and then two consecutive four-month work terms between Semesters 4 and 5. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply.  While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) reports that 75 per cent of the new jobs created between 2009 and 2018 are in high-skill, high-tech occupations. This demand will only grow as technology continues to advance and change the way we live and work especially in industrially dynamic regions such as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Our graduates work at major organizations such as CTV and CBC, Ontario Power Generation, Hydro One, Rogers, Telus and Bell, as well as BlackBerry, Celestica, and GE Canada, to mention just a few. They put the skills to work in research and development where they build prototypes and test new devices. They are manufacturers’ representatives, technical salespeople, managers and entrepreneurs. Humber’s Game Programming advanced diploma program is project-driven and focuses on programming and designing game engines for the purpose of game development, from indie to AAA. You will work on team projects using programming tools to develop, test and maintain game applications through the practice of theories of usability, information architectures, network architecture and industry standards of practice. Topics such as coding, game engine design, game production, artificial intelligence, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and platform-specific programming are all covered by a comprehensive set of courses.

Throughout your study, you will have access to peers in related programs such as Visual and Digital Arts and Animation - 3D which will allow you to participate in collaborative work, as well as the opportunity to build high-quality assets for use in the games you are developing as a student programmer.

You will graduate with a significant capstone project to demonstrate your coding talents, and a well-rounded skillset that combines high levels of mathematics, physics and visualization within the field of computer programming. With a high degree of game engine expertise, familiarity with 3D modelling, scripting, and technical direction, you will have the tools you need to compete and succeed in the rapidly expanding field of game development.

In Humber’s Electromechanical Engineering Technician diploma program, you’ll learn how to support the engineering activities of manufacturers that rely increasingly on automation technology to maintain a competitive edge in the global economy. Develop skills in industrial automation, robotics, control systems, machining, hydraulics, pneumatics, safety, mechatronics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), electrical, programming, manufacturing process, and computer-control methods.

Complementing your technical education are the effective communications, problem-solving and interpersonal skills that add value to any team. Coursework reflects real-world demands through independent and co-operative study in practical environments, including experience with industrial size modern equipment. The industry-relevant curriculum is taught by faculty at the top of their fields, to provide you with the skills and knowledge employers are looking for.

From robotics to mobile devices to automobiles and food processing, our graduates make their mark on processing, packaging, power generation, mining, machine assembly, troubleshooting and testing, systems integration, application support, maintenance, component testing and assembly, automation programming, robotic maintenance and programming, and technical sales and services. Automation systems integrators are needed to build, troubleshoot, and maintain robotic and automated manufacturing cells, as well as mobile equipment. You will also find opportunities in purchasing, customer service, quality control and quality assurance.

Computer Systems Technician - Information Technology Infrastructure and Services diploma program prepares you for careers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will build a foundation in electrical and logic circuits, and programming. You will also learn about the main hardware and software components of your computer and different features to improve performance of computer systems. Curriculum in the program prepares you for the role of system administrator whose responsibilities include installation, configuration and managing various operating systems including Microsoft servers, different distributions of Linux supported by virtualization tools and network infrastructure, supporting data and network security. You will also learn about data centre technologies that support small- and medium-sized businesses. You will gain knowledge in supporting public, private, and hybrid cloud environments, and integrating cloud technologies and services. 

The program will give you hands-on experience with various hardware platforms, protocols and services with a strong emphasis on network and data systems security. You will have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to deploy and support Linux and Microsoft operating systems, and administer web servers and applications using different scripting environments.

• This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession.

Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma program gives you a thorough knowledge of materials and mechanical solutions for designing and manufacturing mechanical parts and assemblies. You will learn in Humber’s state-of-the-art labs, offering you the practical experience you need to succeed. Courses focus on:

• Engineering drawings/calculations
• Mechanical operations
• Programming of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam
• Applying design principles and practices
• Design and manufacturing process problems
• Learning 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software – AutoCAD, 3D CAD software – SolidWorks

The curriculum includes courses in solids mechanics, mechanical design, hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), manufacturing and management. You will be able to develop the manufacturing procedures to produce mechanical components.

Humber’s Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma program provides you with the skills needed for a career in the growing field of civil infrastructure. Infrastructure encompasses all of the essential elements necessary for society to operate including buildings, transportation (highways and transit), municipal services (water, wastewater) and green spaces.

The curriculum, designed in collaboration with industry, covers all aspects of infrastructure, from the inception of an idea to the completion of construction, and blends in-class academic learning with hands-on laboratory work. You will learn how to design structural steel, reinforced concrete and timber structures. Municipal services (water, wastewater) and water supply management will be explored. Transportation infrastructure and highway design will be studied using design codes and standards. Additionally, you will learn all the skills necessary to support design and construction including surveying, geomatics, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), drafting (AutoCAD and Building Information Modelling (BIM)), soils and materials testing, project administration and management, and environmental protection and remediation. Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program offers you the knowledge, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certification necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event planning professional.

Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities aimed at assisting students prepare for and transition to valued positions in the event industry including:

In the first semester of the program, you get immediate experience on campus working at a high profile event. And for the next two years, you will be thoroughly immersed in the world of special events via networking, volunteering and event execution opportunities. Students will be working in The Humber Room restaurant live lab for a full semester. Essential skills will be taught to prepare students for many different types of events.

Work Placement
Work experience is integral to developing a diverse and successful career in the event management profession. In this program, you will participate in a comprehensive seven-week work placement experience (280 hours) in your final semester before graduation. While on work placement, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom to real event work in the field, network, and develop professional connections and relationships you will carry with you throughout your career.

Humber’s Journalism graduate certificate program will immerse you in advanced research, writing and interview practices, data mining techniques, and a range of storytelling approaches for work within a multiplatform journalistic or information-gathering environment. You will also have the opportunity to pursue discipline-specific reporting in areas such as science, business, sports and the arts.

Using the latest technologies, the program will focus on training graduates for the field of journalism with an emphasis on digital journalism. Graduates will be able to function in a digital/online environment including social media and data-based journalism. An emphasis will be placed on providing you with opportunities to practise and develop your journalism skills through coverage of live field events.

Our Sustainability Energy and Building Technology advanced diploma program positions graduates with a portfolio of skills that are in high demand.

Our unique program prepares graduates to examine, model and improve the energy and environmental performance of existing buildings; to support the design, construction and operation of new, sustainable buildings being built to increasingly stringent performance standards; to implement renewable energy technologies; and to support new approaches to understanding and managing energy use and building resilience into campuses, neighbourhoods or whole cities. At one time we paid little attention to the cost, availability or environmental impact of energy use – today, these are issues of growing importance to individuals, business and government.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Perform a land site assessment to determine potential for renewable energy harvesting, optimum placement of wind, solar and earth energy technologies and building orientation for passive solar gain and protection from the elements.
• Perform an energy needs analysis for residential or small-scale commercial or industrial structures, designated under Section 9 of the Ontario Building Code, and identify building system components that save energy.
• Perform an energy audit on residential, small-scale commercial and industrial buildings, designated under Section 9 of the Ontario Building Code, to determine energy efficiency, problem areas and energy loss and advise on corrective actions.
• Design and propose a grid-tied or off-grid renewable energy system for a residential or small-scale commercial or industrial structure, designated under Section 9 of the Ontario Building Code, based on an energy needs analysis.
• Adhere to legal, regulatory and health and safety codes and guidelines in sustainable energy and building technology practice.
• Estimate the costs and time schedule of implementing a renewable energy/energy efficiency system, including annual running costs and return on investment.
• Assist in land development, regulatory and stakeholder processes regarding the placement of renewable energy/energy efficiency technologies during the planning/approval phase.
• Assist in the selection of heating, cooling, hot water and electrical systems and equipment during the building specification phase in a new structure or retrofit to ensure high energy efficiency.
• Assist in the delivery, handling, installation and testing of renewable energy/energy efficiency technologies during the construction phase
• Prepare a viable business plan for a new energy business venture.
• Assist in the development of sales and marketing strategies for energy products and services.
• Promote an integrated or whole building approach with clients, industry professionals and associations.

Work Placement

• Our program features an optional work placement of 400 hours (minimum). This offers practical experience in the energy efficiency, green building or sustainable energy industry sectors following Semester 4. We work with business, industry and government to identify work placement opportunities.
