Humber’s Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program emphasizes electronic products, control systems and telecommunications - all built on a strong basis of computer and networking engineering. The program provides you with hands-on experience of electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits. Our experienced faculty will teach you about computer programming, interfacing, local networks, radio frequency circuits, basic programmable logic controllers (PLC), industrial electronics, wired and wireless communication devices, and troubleshooting techniques. You’ll be taught how to embed these circuits into smart devices, industrial equipment, and consumer products.

You’ll also build and test circuit boards, learn electronics fabrication, program PLCs and design embedded systems in our state-of-the-art labs including a prototyping facility.

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering – Mechatronics discipline gives you hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. You can choose from focused study in either robotics or embedded systems. During the course of the program, students will solve real industry and community problems and gain knowledge and skills in mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering. Students use emerging and cutting edge technologies in robotics, control, electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), motors, mechanical components, digital and analog circuits, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), machine learning, modelling, simulation, embedded systems, and advanced manufacturing. Each of these themes provides theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on training to complement a systems-thinking approch to solving real world problems. 

In addition, this program provides an opportunity to work on industry-led projects through multidisciplinary capstone projects as well as applied research opportunities. Through these experiences, students apply the theoretical knowledge gained during their education to solve real industry problems, while improving their professional skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration and problem-solving. 

This program is also offered at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Students in the program will collaborate on activities using technology that will involve simultaneous learning at both colleges. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.

Humber’s Construction Engineering Technology program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Building Construction Technician diploma, the program introduces you to the carpentry trade, gives you practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from various certificate and diploma programs into the advanced diploma program (including Carpentry and Renovation Technician, Industrial Woodworking Technician, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, and Building Construction Technician).

The advanced diploma program is designed to explore the construction industry from an engineering and management perspective. You will become familiar with the strategies required for project planning and execution for the commercial-based industry.

Throughout the program, you will learn about compliance with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and regulations. You will also learn how to ensure that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices. Coursework will include sustainability practices. Teamwork, leadership, and supervisory and interpersonal skills will be emphasized.

Key learnings will include:

• Collecting, processing, analyzing and co-ordinating technical data to produce project-related documents
• Co-ordinating and facilitating the collecting, processing, interpreting and application of survey/geomatics and layout information
• Selecting and using industry-specific technologies
• Monitoring projects through principles of construction project management
• Preparing estimates
• Performing, co-ordinating and facilitating quality control testing

Optional Co-op
This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession.

For students who are accepted into the program, two co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and the second four-month work term is between Semesters 4 and 5. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply. While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Humber’s advanced diploma program in Electronics Engineering Technology consistently ranks among our most employable programs. This program builds on skills learned in the Electronics Engineering Technician diploma program and will prepare you to work in all fields where electric circuits and systems are found. You will acquire strong fundamental knowledge to help you build a career in all new and emerging technologies manufactured here in North America like photonics, laser technology, medical imaging, new electronic materials and devices, intelligent systems, entertainment, and broadcasting systems. The program takes a system design and integration approach to electronic applications, and you will gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in:

• Electronic circuits: analog, digital, radio-frequency and programmable circuits
• Connectivity and interface design, embedded microcontrollers, IoT integration
• The full skill set of computer networking including wireless networks
• Wireless telecommunications, antennas, waveguides and transmission lines
• Telecommunication electronics such as photonics, fibre optics and microwaves
• Signal acquisition and signal processing
• Image processing including high-definition television (HDTV) and medical imaging
• Control systems both embedded and computer-based
• Instrumentation used in industrial, scientific and medical applications

We have designed the curriculum in collaboration with an advisory panel comprising highly successful industry experts in order to ensure you are learning the most up-to-date, relevant material. You will spend approximately half your time in labs working with electronic, analog, digital and programmable circuits and learning how to embed these circuits into cell phones, audio equipment, high-definition (HD) video systems, robots, computers and advanced instruments.

Humber’s Practical Nursing diploma program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a registered practical nurse (RPN). You will develop, practise and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences. Humber is a leading-edge facility in every respect. This program has been awarded the highest rating for accreditation - a testament to its excellence. Practice and learn in our bioscience and health science laboratories – including clinical simulation labs that provide hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Continuous placement in a range of clinical settings enhances your ability to apply in-classroom education to real-life situations.

You will participate in a total of 1,035 hours of unpaid clinical placements over the course of the program which take place over each semester and give you valuable hands-on experience. The school arranges and communicates with all placements. Throughout the first year of the program, you will participate in a unique community-service learning placement in a variety of community settings. In Semester 2, you will work in a long-term care setting, while Semester 3 takes place in rehabilitation, complex or acute-care settings. In Semester 2 and 3, you will also participate in clinical simulation and/or Stilwell (a virtual learning community designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood). In Semester 4, you will complete a preceptored (one-on-one placement alongside a registered practical nurse) pre-graduate clinical practice.

As a graduate of our program, you will be able to work in various health-care settings including acute-care hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation services, community services, psychiatry, homes for the aging, public health units, community nursing agencies, clinics, private practices, schools and child-care centres. Humber’s Welding Techniques certificate program is designed to help introduce prospective welders to the trade. The program aims to facilitate employment and entry into the apprenticeship program by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices. You will gain a solid understanding of the various technical theory and elements of the welding trade. You will be exposed to topics including health and safety, blueprint reading and sketching, applied math, communication, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, introduction to computers, and all position structural welding. You will learn valuable skills by using the latest industry software programs and working in fully equipped up-to-date labs and shops. Practise your new skills in the real world with an 84-hour business work placement in Semester 4. Students find their own placement, which can be paid or unpaid. The business placement advisor maintains a roster of placement opportunities and provides students with direction and assistance in the development of resumés and job search techniques.

Humber's Professional Accounting Practice graduate certificate program provides you with the required knowledge and skills essential to begin and advance in the field of accounting. You will be well prepared for careers in the field with knowledge of all accounting disciplines including financial accounting, management accounting, audit and assurance, finance, and personal and corporate tax. You will also develop computer technology, management, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, along with professional communication and interpersonal skills. This program is a path for students already holding a bachelor's degree in any discipline other than accounting and who are interested in pursuing the Chartered Professional Accounting designation. No prior accounting knowledge is required.

Work Placement
Humber has the only graduate certificate of its kind in Ontario that provides students with hands-on work experience in the field of accounting. Through a mandatory 160 hour work placement, students will make industry connections and can gain experience in small, medium and large organizations, and in entrepreneurial start-ups.

Humber’s Broadcast Television/Videography (BRTV) diploma program will quickly prepare you for media content creation in operational and production roles. An intensive, behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting will give you a solid grounding in video production skills and broadcast standards. This program is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to work behind the scenes in television production and features a wide variety of courses, as well as field experience opportunities, empowering graduates for success in the broadcast industry.

You will learn about:

• live studio and live remote broadcasting
• single camera location shooting
• video editing and audio mixing
• writing, planning and producing content

Your hands-on broadcasting education will be enriched by access to Humber’s high-definition television mobile truck—the most advanced of its kind among Ontario colleges. This compact, 35-foot television facility features state-of-the-art broadcast equipment including the latest cameras, video production switcher, digital recording system, broadcast graphics software and editing facilities.

Humber has a strong reputation in the television broadcasting industry.BRTV students regularly produce and live stream Humber Hawks varsity games and esport tournaments. BRTV students have also worked with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) on National Lacrosse League games and with Double Black Diamond Productions on internationally broadcast FIS World Cup events.

Note: the January 2020 program start will offer a hybrid curriculum for Semesters 1 and 2. A hybrid curriculum is a blend of face-to-face and online. Semester 2 will be offered from May to August. Semesters 3 and 4 (September to April) will be comprised of face-to-face class time.

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.
