Overview

Our program has a fall and winter start date. Each intake runs for three consecutive semesters, which means you can complete the full program in just one year. During the spring and fall, students complete extensive hands-on training designed around real-world firefighting experiences and scenarios. Additional classroom theory, college course material and medical upgrading to the EMR Standard, occurs during the winter months. Students graduate fully- prepared to enter the fire service industry.

Fleming’s program provides you with over 60 days of hands-on practical training, which is delivered at the Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy (EOETA). The Academy is a well–established, fully equipped fire and emergency services training facility.

Course content is based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and includes the following topics: fire behavior, suppression, ventilation, incident management systems, command and control, hazardous materials, forcible entry, firefighter survival, auto extrication, confined space awareness, technical rescue, fire attack scenarios, fitness and wellness, fire prevention principles, public education and medical training that includes the Red Cross Emergency Medical Response (EMR) and International Trauma Life Support (ITLS). To further assist students, we offer fire industry-specific interviewing techniques and career planning strategies to prepare them for the application and interview process within the fire services.

The Eastern Ontario Emergency Training Academy (EOETA), our primary training facility, is located 40km east of Peterborough in the village of Norwood. EOETA has several established training environments including a burn tower, roof props, door props, search and rescue maze, confined space prop and a new high intensity propane training props. Students are fully-trained in all aspects of firefighting in a real-world environment, live-fire environment, allowing for a proper evaluation of each student, while completing the NFPA hands-on skills practice and evaluations.

Our Welding Techniques program offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a variety of welding processes, in preparation for employment in this high-demand field.

Program Highlights
The two-semester Welding Techniques program will provide graduates with entry level employable skills for the welding field. Curriculum in the program has been aligned to the basic requirements for Level One Apprenticeship for Welding Fabrication. Labour market demand for skilled welders is high. The Welding Techniques program will introduce you to numerous welding processes and you will gain extensive hands-on experience on the most common processes used within the industry. These processes include:

  • SMAW (shielded metal arc welding)
  • GMAW (gas metal arc welding)

You will also be exposed to specialized processes such as:

  • FCAW (flux core arc welding)
  • GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding)

Basic blueprint reading, trade math, weld symbols, metallurgy, oxy-fuel and plasma cutting/gouging will also be covered. Upon successful completion of the Welding Techniques program, you will be given the opportunity to challenge the SMAW 1G weld test and the 2GF certification from Canadian Welding Bureau. If successful, you will be issued a Welding Ticket by CWB which is valid for two years.

Delivered at our campus in Peterborough, this is one of the few two-year Graphic Design advanced diploma programs offered in Ontario. In this intensive, compressed program, three years of study is completed over a two- year period. Graduates are ready to start their graphic design careers in just 24 months.

Students in Fleming’s accelerated graphic design program learn and work in a unique, contemporary design studio space; in this “classroom as design lab and studio,” they discover what it takes to become a professional designer, and how to thrive in this fast-paced industry.

Students gain the skills and understanding required to communicate ideas in digital and printed media through extensive and varied applied learning experiences. Learn to program, support, and troubleshoot computer hardware and software in this four-semester program.

With this program, you will gain skills in computer networking and configuration, network security, and technical communications. You will also learn about solving computer problems that can cause both major costs and setbacks for businesses, whether due to a major hardware failure or a minor software incompatibility. During the five semesters in the Practical Nursing program, you will learn the concepts and skills related to health and nursing. You will also learn nursing practices and interventions in specific health situations. In addition, you will have the opportunity to study courses such as anatomy and physiology, communication, introductory psychology and human growth and development. After successfully completing Fleming's five-semester diploma program, graduates are eligible to write the national examinations with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and become registered to practice in Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse. Graduates wishing to be registered with the CNO will be asked to sign a declaration of their status regarding:

  • Citizenship

Therapeutic Recreation professionals use a variety of techniques to help their clients enjoy greater independence, improve their health and well-being, and reduce or eliminate the effects of their illness or disability.

Program Highlights
This three-semester program prepares graduates for work in recreation, health or social service delivery settings. The program is offered in a combination of on-campus and online courses. During the first two semesters, you are required to be on campus two days of each week for the on-campus courses. The remainder of the courses are taken online. The program structure of combined class time and online learning provides you with the flexibility to participate in volunteer activities and to maintain family/work balance. This style of program delivery allows for practitioners currently working in the field to return to school and upgrade their skills without having to leave their job.

On the days you are on not on campus for courses, you’ll have the time to explore a variety of volunteer roles within the profession. This experience will enhance your learning and you will develop valuable industry connections and relationships for placements and possible future employment.

The third semester is a supervised field placement which can take place in the work setting and geographic location of your choice. Assistance to obtain the placement that best suits your goals will be provided.

You will learn specialized skills and how to utilize a wide range of interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs of clients. You will learn to:

You must maintain a 75% overall average and an average of 65% in ACCT 72, ACCT4, ACCT22, ACCT 76, ACCT 80, ACCT 23, and ACCT 77 in order to meet the requirements of the accounting specialization degree at Trent, and the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Canada professional accreditation body.

Advanced Diploma in Biotechnology - Advanced

The Biotechnology - Advanced program prepares students to analyze forensic, DNA and other medical applications data in automated lab environments.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
With a career in the field of biotechnology with an emphasis in forensics, you have diverse employment opportunities, from working in biological research to quality assurance, to medical or health-related fields, tracking down criminals or identifying victims of crime. Laboratory related occupations are among the fastest growing occupations in the economy. With specialization in forensics and biotechnology, this program is unique and its graduates are in demand in this emerging field. This advanced diploma program would traditionally take six semesters to complete. However, the program has been designed in an accelerated, compressed format, to provide six semesters of course work over five semesters.

In their final, fifth semester, students can complete their full-time internship from April to August - giving graduates the advantage of getting out into the workforce faster. (Should they so choose, students may defer the summer internship until the fall.) Courses in the program integrate theory and practice opportunities in labs and practice settings. Graduates will be critical thinkers with problem-solving abilities, strong interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills and a solid foundation in forensic/DNA/medical applications.
